With extraordinary stakes on the line, President Bush has invited both presidential candidates and the leaders of the House and Senate to the White House on Thursday in hopes of securing a bill to rescue the economy.
Bush took the unusual step Wednesday night of calling Democratic Sen. Barack Obama directly to invite him to the meeting, White House press secretary Dana Perino said. An Obama spokesman said the senator would attend. The White House has also invited Republican Sen. John McCain.
Perino said the goal of the session is to make progress -- fast -- on a bipartisan solution to the biggest economic crisis in decades.
She said the call between Bush and Obama lasted several minutes and was "a good conversation."
Obama spokesman Bill Burton said the Democratic presidential contender "will continue to work in a bipartisan spirit and do whatever is necessary to come up with a final solution."
The move by Bush came just a short time before he was to address the nation about the financial crisis.

Is there any knowledge of the morning call to McCain from Obambi? Was there an actual conversation between these guys at 8:30 this morning like Obama said, or was a message left for Senator McCain and the call returned at 2:30.
Obama got Bush-whacked. LOL!
Legitamacy?
Hahah read between the lines.
McCain: Country First Campaign on Hold I am a Sneator and my country needs me to Help.
Barry Hussein: Not me Chump you can go but I got babies to kiss.
President Bush: Senator Hussein it would be so nice if you could interrupt your busy telepromter tour and come vote on a minor little bill that our contry needs.
Barry Hussein just got schooled.
Well, he did say “If they need me, they’ll call me.”
I hate to say it, but it could be seen as Obama being needed, so he came to DC.
Bush just sabotaged McCain.
Call was returned at 2:30.
Bush did exactly what McCain requested earlier in the day. Why are you jumping all over Bush for it?
“Bush did exactly what McCain requested earlier in the day. Why are you jumping all over Bush for it?”
Honestly I was ticked at him when I first saw this. After looking everything over now I think it worked out pretty good.
Or as Obama being told to drag his sorry butt back to DC to earn his salary. It’s hard to tell how this will play out. By the way, I heard from 2 Senate staffers that the plan is likely to be enacted very soon.
Barry said earlier today that he did not need to return to DC, because he could multitask.
So, why is he now returning ?
Obviously President Bush took him to the woodshed and now he can’t beat feet fast enough to get back to DC.
What a non multitasking wimp.
I don’t want this guy answering the phone at 3 am or at any other hour.
The solution in post #62 works for me.
Well, that's one way back to a gold standard and fiscal responsibility!
If that's what it takes to save the republic, it will be painful, but frankly, I doubt there's much hope for any other recovery, what with American culture embracing socialism and fascism so strongly.
"Profit is private and individual. Loss is public and social." --Gaetano Salvemini, on how fascism makes taxpayers responsible to private enterprise.
Obama doesn’t need to be an expert, nor does he need his teleprompter in the meeting. He’ll ask to bring along his experts who help him through times of trial — Michelle, and his grandmother. Yes, that should prepare him well......
The One accetps and invitation to do what he was elected to do? Big of him. Do we need any more proof that he is a professional candidate. He was elected by the people, or rather the thugs, of Illinois to make these decsisions. I have not seen anyone point this out. Certainly the McCain campaign should.
They should have a Highchair and Bib for him.
Pray for W, McCuda and Our Troops

I still wanted Barry O to be shocked to see Governor Sarah Palin walk out onto the stage and declare that she was ready to step into Sen. McCain’s shoes while he was unavailable, doing his job.
Personally, I think the only reason Bush should have called Obama back was to have the FBI question him about his campaign staff’s connections to Fannie/Freedie/Leeham etc.
Not that the average American will get it, but multi-tasking my rear end
You have to be actually present in the Senate to cast a vote.
Actually, I wonder if Barry even knows how to vote yes or no.....
a final solution?
Uh Oh.
