John McCain announced that he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged his opponent Barack Obama to do the same.

The Arizona senator also asked the Presidential Debate Commission to postpone Friday’s scheduled debate with Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.

“America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen,” McCain said.

A 527 group should put out an ad, something to the effect of...

At 3am, when that phone rings, do you want a president who will issue a press release, or one who will lead?

Politically targeting the people that caused it? Great, I'd love to also, but that's not going to fix this disaster!!

If the truth gets out that should happen (targeting) in November. This is a bad issue for Democrats.

I wouldn’t bail out anyone. Bad business has caught up with many and they need to pay for it . Stop loaning money to people who have NO WAY of paying you back. A damn kid knows that much.

The Dems will now try to drag this thing out.

Let them. Their members are anxious to get home. The longer they are in DC, the more time for GOP challengers to attack, attack, attack.

A central thesis to the McCain candidacy is that he can get things accomplished across bipartisan lines. Essentially he is assuming the mantle of presidential leadership.

Another point: McCain has gotten inside BO's head and rattled him again. BO has done all this cramming on foreign policy for Friday, perhaps for naught. Additionally, the global economic implications of foreign policy are now guaranteed to enter the Friday debate, which further escalates BO's learning curve. He's cramming for an exam for which McCain is continuing to raise the stakes.

McCain should send Gov. Palin on Friday and have her state this on the first question asked of her.

“Sen. McCain, while excited to discuss his years of experience and future ideas for US foreign policy, and while also recognizing the great importance of this topic and how it pertains to the future of our great country, feels that tonight is not the night for a debate on the subject. He is hard at work in Washington, trying to ensure that every citizen of the United States can go to sleep tonight knowing that Sen. John McCain is doing everything in his power to get this economy back on track. Sen. McCain, as he has done many times previous, extends yet again an offer to Sen. Obama for a weekly townhall meeting, at locations all over the country, on every and any topic, beginning next Friday. Thank you, and God Bless America.”

Found the entire text, and it seems so appropriate to this day. A link is included below for those of you too young to have heard these wonderful old hymns in church.

Once to every man and nation, comes the moment to decide,
In the strife of truth with falsehood, for the good or evil side;
Some great cause, some great decision, offering each the bloom or blight,
And the choice goes by forever, ’twixt that darkness and that light.

Then to side with truth is noble, when we share her wretched crust,
Ere her cause bring fame and profit, and ’tis prosperous to be just;
Then it is the brave man chooses while the coward stands aside,
Till the multitude make virtue of the faith they had denied.

By the light of burning martyrs, Christ, Thy bleeding feet we track,
Toiling up new Calv’ries ever with the cross that turns not back;
New occasions teach new duties, time makes ancient good uncouth,
They must upward still and onward, who would keep abreast of truth.

Though the cause of evil prosper, yet the truth alone is strong;
Though her portion be the scaffold, and upon the throne be wrong;
Yet that scaffold sways the future, and behind the dim unknown,
Standeth God within the shadow, keeping watch above His own.

0bama was surging in what polls? Are you talking about the outlier polls by abc and fox news today? These polls don’t line up with Rasmussen and others who continue to show the race at a virtual tie.

He just scored and threw the ball to Obama and challenged him to top that. He just took that 3:AM phone call and made it look like he had to call Obama and tell him what needed to be done. He made it look like Obama can’t recognize a problem and know when to act. I hope it resonates with the American people. Talk about a risk taker! McCain still has a lot of the young daring John McCain left in him. I’d say he has gotten better over the years. This is a man America can trust. He is even showing he is ready to take the reins from George Bush.

1. Obama privately raised the possibility of suspending campaigns for the next few days.

The word is that Obama raised the possibility of working together to get a bailout bill. McCain went one step further with the campaign suspension.

McCain speaking from the floor of the Senate and being shown on the news will play good.

Do you really think the MSM will show video of this? Fat chance...

this is silly, if there is a debate in the Senate on this economic crisis, both obama and mccain should be THERE participating in this....they ARE senators, they can leave a decision on the debate till friday morning........we all might want a break for the debate by then, or they may have solved the financial crisis....or be well on their way.....but why does’t obama want to go back to the senate chambers and work on this?

Because Obama is an idiot who doesn't understand what's going on here. The guy (and his campaign) are so focused on their schedule, and perceived opportunities, that they appear to have missed the entire point of "leadership."

McCain has shown something of himself that I think will resonate with people. "Oh.... so THIS is what a statesman looks like. "

The same INTRADE who had Romney at 80% the day before the VP announcement?

Or the one that had Bush at 15% on election late afternoon 2004?

People have short memories. For seven years, McCain has the biggest thorn in the republican party’s side legislatively. He will return as the head cheerleader in presenting the democrat’s bill, which will be a financial disaster. No bill is always better than a dem bill.
