McCain Suspends Campaign to Help With Bailout

John McCain announced that he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged his opponent Barack Obama to do the same.

The Arizona senator also asked the Presidential Debate Commission to postpone Friday’s scheduled debate with Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.

“America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen,” McCain said.

Foreign policy is supposed to be his strength and now he wimped out, so it looks like he is scared of Obama and weak?

Precisely because of this, McCain's move is brilliant. Everybody has economy in their mind. Talking about foreign policy --bar the Russians invading London or something catastrophe-- will not switch the topic of the day. By doing this, McCain forces everybody to focus on the economy with him showing some actions. When the economic crisis has been addressed (with whatever policy they might come up with), McCain will start talking about foreign policy again, which as you said, is his strength.

Bush and McCain saw this coming years ago and all efforts to stop it were blocked by Dems. That’s all that needs to be said. It’s unspinnable.

I hope McCain makes this point on the Senate floor, and to the media, when they bring up their "showboating" BS.

McCain is unconventional. He's taking on the Democrats' biggest issue - the economy and saying I'll fix it. No one expected him to do that and for a lot of swing voters who were thinking of moving to Obama, this is like an electric shock to their nervous system. McCain shows he is in touch with the mood of the country; Obama still refuses to comprehend we have a crisis! Suspending the campaign is brilliant political theater.

Good summary. I couldn't agree more.

I wish McCain didn't make any announcement, and just showed up in Washington today, rolled up his sleaves, and then stated “Let's put this mess in proper order.”

The announcement is part of the campaign.

Exactly. As I said in my original post both should suspend their campaigns IMO right now (for this important legislation being FORCED on “we the people”).

A financial crisis in the financial sector, we are still manufacturing, working, most of us are paying our mortgages. Most ‘average americans’ will only hear the spin of the msm, whom will make this look like a desperate move. Do people really believe that Senator McCain can’t conduct senate business while campaigning?

McCain's move is brilliant. Everybody has economy in their mind. ... By doing this, McCain forces everybody to focus on the economy with him showing some actions.

And also, McCain is doing the completely unexpected. Can anyone rememeber someone stopping their campaigning before? He's not only saying he's for change, but is actively demonstrating it. While Obama is continuing on as usual...

Every day brings me closer to deciding that America is doomed... our people are so uneducated on our history that they rush headlong into the very reasons that we revolted and started this GIFT FROM GOD. America is truly on the brink of destruction from within.

What tougher times? Name them.

FDR - middle of the Great Depression.

FDR - peak of World War II - before D-Day when victory was still in doubt.

Abraham Lincoln - months before the Civil War was to formally break out (when it was clear that things were headed towards war).

Abraham Lincoln - at the height of the Civil War (and facing one of his own Generals in the election).

Truman/Eisenhower - at the height of the Korean War, when it was still in doubt, and when the Cold War was just ramping up (remember, we fought China during the Korean War).

James Madison - right after Congress declared war on Britain in June of 1812.

I would say what we face now is somewhere around George W Bush and the War on Terror, War in Iraq, and Nixon in '68 at the height of the Vietnam War, when we had Americans openly marching (rioting) in the streets, as far as difficulty.

Everything else on the list above was much more serious than what we face now, and yet people still campaigned and still debated.

Hell, Lincoln had to run against one of his own Generals when the North still didn't realize it had the advantage in numbers and equipment, and well before Sherman broke the Confederacy's back.

The only way the MSM will succeed in making this look like a desperate move is if they quit all the headlines about wall street and the financial markets. I highly doubt they will be willing to do that, even to spin the election.

Average Joe is brighter than you think - anyone with money in a 401K notices it's been going down for months now. Anyone with a house or looking at one has seen prices fall (in almost all areas). Everyone sees the price of gas and food going up. People might be self-absorbed, but enough has happened to be noticed by almost everyone. Except perhaps those in the remote areas of Alaska;)

LOL. Some of them are almost to that point here. I’m waiting for the one to lose it and go off on McCain (actually, I think one did, from reading the reply to the deleted post, which was copied in the reply). When they’re this upset, you know McCain’s done something VERY right :D

It hasn't proven to be a success yet, only time will tell that. Obviously there are quit a few people, not necessarily what you degradingly call trolls that don't agree this is a good move. IMO it wasn't, it does make him appear panicky!!
