John McCain announced that he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged his opponent Barack Obama to do the same.

The Arizona senator also asked the Presidential Debate Commission to postpone Friday’s scheduled debate with Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.

“America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen,” McCain said.

Obama making your points now -- "a president needs to be able to do more than one thing at once."

The Obama campaign should be paying me for that!

I have a feeling the Obama campaign will run wild with the "John McCain can't do more than one thing at a time while even George W Bush could run the War on Terror and still take time out to debate Kerry".

Furthermore, John McCain is still obliging his friends, the Clintons, by showing up at their event tomorrow. He can make time for the Clintons, but he can't make time to debate in front of the American people. Way to go John!

The drunk on next barstool always knows best, remember! He ought to be running the country, the banks, or in this case the McCain campaign. He'd fix everything given half a chance! Yeah, the drunk on next barstool knows!

Abraham Lincoln managed to campaign during the Civil War.

With an aggressively hostile opponent who had been one of Abe's generals at one time.

While all of what you say may be true, it always pays to find out what the problem is before you try to fix it. I recommend a read of Michelle Malkin's take on this regarding the 'illegal alien' connection, for a unique view of the problem. One that may be closest to home. One that may be a preview of what the FBI findings may show. And one that should influence 'the fix'.

Well, yours is a guess but this is politics and “seizing the moment” is worth a lot. As you know, perception is reality and someone who is IN Wash. is certainly going to be perceived to be doing more then someone phoning it in from the campaign trail.

And the libs in congress can’t do anyhting to McCain if he simply states his beliefs on the best way to handle this situation. The important thing he is THERE and he is LEADING his Party. No on expects the left to agree with anything he says and if they simply disagree to disagree it will only drive their abysmal ratings even lower.

Obama just said, “He will focus on debating on Friday!!”

Go ahead bambi, the adult candidate will focus on the economic crisis.

McCain has suspending campaign commericials! That’s what the reporter said. Obama will not commit to doing the same.

OMG, like duh!

As if Sen McCain did not know what your Hussein would say?

Would not know what the MSM would say? If Sen McCain feels like he should go meet with Paulson and such, they he will go for a few days. Good grief!

Wow, I hope you are not a rightwinger and just a troll, because your sniveling is embarrassing.

Wow....this seems risky but the right thing to do. The MSM is going to paint this as McCain “freaking out”....

Okay, so let me get this straight....

Obama called McCain and suggested they “come together and make a joint statement”?

McCain said - “I’m going to Washington to DO something!”?

That pretty much sum it up?

So, as always, Obama wants to just flap his jaws, vote ‘present’ once again, and accomplish absolutely nothing?

Good idea to suspend both campaigns IMO (watching Barack now...saying he is still preparing for the debate on Friday), yet he is giving a good statement.

We are sure in interesting times.

I have not yet read any comments but my first reaction when I heard of this McCain cancellation and that OBama was not going to postpone the debates, was to send Sarah to stand in for McCain. That is, after all, what a Vice President does, takes over for the President when called on to do so. Also, when OBama says no, he will be seen as being afraid of a confrontation that will not be favorable to him. Palin is better equipped to discuss any subject he may have been prepared for. McCain is doing what he was elected to do as a Senator from his state of Arizona. This is a time to lead, not to debate back burner issues. OBama will be forced to take a stand one way or another but he has already shown that self serving politics comes ahead of serving this country. Come to think of it, OBama is also a senator who owes his state of Illinois representation on this huge tax funded bailout. Oh well.

If providing the facts and what is at stake, then I have no problem with that. The American people must be treated like adults. Paulson, Bernancke et. al. would like to get this resolved prior to the opening of the markets next Monday to prevent a meltdown. And frankly, there is no guarantee that this solution will stave off a possible Depression.
