John McCain announced that he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged his opponent Barack Obama to do the same.

The Arizona senator also asked the Presidential Debate Commission to postpone Friday’s scheduled debate with Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.

“America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen,” McCain said.

Relax.

McCain said he was going on Friday to meet with the President and Congress members.

HE DID NOT SAY HE WAS SUSPENDING HIS CAMPAIGN FOR WEEKS.

Wow, why all the hysteria?

Obama said it—President needs to be able to deal with more than one thing at once. It is more important now than ever to debate.

Is that an exact quote?

McCain has his own plan which is outlined on here if you had bothered to check.

No plan in the news release. If I had "bothered to read" for hours all the posts, then I would have sadly missed out on your condescending comment, sweetie.

Obama says “If they need me I’ll go to Washington” What a clown.

He has just shown Americans that his “Country First” slogan is what he actually believes, and he’s willing to put actions behind his words. Say what you will about the man, but I do believe he’s as honest a man as you will find anywhere.

Obama making your points now -- "a president needs to be able to do more than one thing at once."

I called it. Admittedly, that's like "calling" the fact that the sun will rise in the east tomorrow morning.

And for an encore, I predict that the media coverage will overwhelmingly take up that interpretation.

"Looks like even on here don't yet grasp how serious the situation is."

I am amazed as well as saddened by the seeming lack of comprehension by so many here to the seriousness of the crisis we are facing

I didn't cite the poll - you confused with me somebody else (it's a fast moving thread), however I would ask both of you this:

If it's so important that McCain doesn't have time to attend a Presidential debate Friday night, then why doesn't he also skip the campaign speech he is making at Bill Clinton's shindig tomorrow?

As long as John McCain is willing to make the time for his good friends, the Clintons, to show up at their event tomorrow, he's got time to debate in front of the American people the day after.

Obama saying he’s available if needed. He’s not suspending. He keeps pushing that if we can help, we are ready to go anywhere. He’s running for the highest office in the nation, and doesn’t think he needs to be in Washington at this time? What does that tell you about this guy? He wants the debate.

Presidential debate organizers say going ahead for Friday

WASHINGTON (AFP) — Organizers said Wednesday they were going ahead as planned with the first 2008 US presidential debate, despite Republican John McCain’s call to postpone the event in the face of the Wall Street crisis.

“We have been notified by the Commission on Presidential Debates that we are proceeding as scheduled,” said the University of Mississippi, which was to host Friday’s encounter between McCain and Democrat Barack Obama.

“We are ready to host the debate, and we expect the debate to occur as planned,” it said in a statement.

“At present, the University has received no notification of any change in the timing or venue of the debate.”

The first of this election’s three scheduled debates between the White House contenders is due to be held in Oxford, Mississippi on Friday evening.

The non-partisan Commission on Presidential Debates takes charge of organizing the logistics of the debates, brokering agreement between the campaigns on their format, timing and subject matter.

McCain said he was suspending his campaign from Thursday and returning to Washington for deliberations in Congress on the US government’s 700-billion-dollar financial rescue package.

There was no immediate response from the Obama campaign to the Republican’s call to postpone Friday’s debate.

Obama won’t even commit to voting on the “bailout package.”

What a coward.

He’s not canceling his campaign, he’s suspending it for a few days for an emergency.

And Obama is talking both side of his mouth, on the one hand, he came up with the idea first, but on the other hand it’s a bad idea?

No... but all I’ve seen so far is attacks, but no alternatives.

You mean like taking our lumps and letting the market work it out instead of pouring trillions down a rat hole? You're right. I haven't seen anyone with the 'nads to suggest it.

We can't just assume this "brilliance" of McCain will be seen that way by the masses who rely on Campbell Brown and Brian Williams for direction.

Voters who rely on TV talking heads for direction aren't going to vote for John McCain, anyway. We all know the press is backing Barry to the hilt. McCain has to go over their heads, and that's what he's done today.

...we should remember there are millions of voters out there who know absolutely nothing about anything unless the MSM tells them. And the MSM will spin themselves ragged turning this into a "plus" for Obama.

Needs to be repeated.

Didn’t Intrade have Palin at something like 7 the day before McCain announced her as the VP ?

Didn’t they have Pawlenty and Romney up in the 30’s ?
