[history]
John McCain announced that he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged his opponent Barack Obama to do the same.
The Arizona senator also asked the Presidential Debate Commission to postpone Fridays scheduled debate with Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.
America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen, McCain said.

That’s the second time in the past month that McCain has publicly put the nation first rather than campaign-—remember, he cut a full day off of the Republican National Convention because of the hurricane that made landfall in Louisiana.

Obama now comparing the crisis to the Great Depression. Now that we know what is at stake, he needs to respond.

Did Obama open his statement by saying ‘sorry it took so long for me to get here because I was out on the golf course’?

This was to be a foreign policy debate. Can you explain how or why McCain would seek to avoid a debate in which he is head and shoulders x 10 above the empty suit? It is McCains strongest suit so WHY would he want to duck THIS debate as opposed to the ones on demestic policy?
To: dk88
It might be old news by now but I just caught 0bama on teevee saying he’d postpone the debate, andthat he initiated the call to McCain.

Obama now comparing the crisis to the Great Depression. Yet he still stacks it under his debate recital?
Not presidential.

This wont help and looks desperate.
Abraham Lincoln managed to campaign during the Civil War.
FDR managed to campaign during the biggest war in our history.
George Bush managed to campaign during one of the most important wars and biggest threats we have faced in the last 50 years.
John McCain needs a time-out because some companies made some risky decisions.
To: brooklynlou
THIS WILL BACKFIRE ON MCCAIN because the bill will takes weeks and he cannot suspend his campaign for weeks.
To: pollywog
He still hasn’t said he’s cancelling his campaing!! Questions now about this mornings call.

You can't ask for a time-out at the last moment.
Sure you can. I actually don't see a lot of risk in this: the Zogby poll you cited showed low expectations for McCain. Him angling for a delay may be seen as a cop out and serve to lower them further. Either way (Obama agrees or doesn't agree) it sets McCain up to possibly clean Obama's clock and win huge. And we know McCain and Obama's relative debating skills when a teleprompter isn't present ...

“All McCain is doing is making himself look like the kid who pulls the fire alarm to get out of a test, and he opens himself up to the media saying “if you have the answers, why weren't you working on the economy six months ago when the signs were there?” - af_vet_rr
?
He was, and might I add long before that.
This issue is not political, do not let the OBH’s make it so.
We need to support our elected officials and provide them feedback as we try to figure out a game plan. There will be enough time(hopefully)for blame later.
It is time not for more government, but for the PEOPLE to respond now and that means elected ones as well.

Reporter: Is McCain playing politics.
