Economic Fears Give Obama Clear Lead Over McCain in Poll

Turmoil in the financial industry and growing pessimism about the economy have altered the shape of the presidential race, giving Democratic nominee Barack Obama the first clear lead of the general-election campaign over Republican John McCain, according to the latest Washington Post-ABC News national poll. Just 9 percent of those surveyed rated the economy as good or excellent, the first time that number has been in single digits since the days just before the 1992 election.

Just 14 percent said the country is heading in the right direction, equaling the record low on that question in polls dating back to 1973. More voters trust Obama to deal with the economy, and he currently has a big edge as the candidate who is more in tune with the economic problems Americans now face.

He also has a double-digit advantage on handling the current problems on Wall Street, and as a result, there has been a rise in his overall support. The poll found that, among likely voters, Obama now leads McCain by 52 percent to 43 percent.

“This time, I truly believe America is not going to buy it. Will be interesting to see more polling today. Have a feeling Obamas numbers are falling even more.....
I pray you are correct.

Thanks for your work in getting the other numbers out.”

There is no way, no way Obama is leading by 9 as this poll from ABC/WAshington posts states. I am traveling today but keep an eye on realclearpolitics.com and I will too. I bet by the end of the day Obama is down more from yesterday (has too after the gaffes of Biden and economy not as paralysising as last week....and McCain/Palin getting more positive press)....Obvious from this poll coming out so late that they wanted to be the last poll posted. This way the press picks up on it, like it was flashed on Fox this morning, and then turn around with a Washington Post piece that blames McCain for the Economic disaster and acts like Obama (or more like wishes) was moving up because of this....what a bunch of crap.

HEY, Allegra.....we are proud of you for fighting in Baghdad....keep up the great work!!!! McCain will be the next leader......it will happen!!

The poll was taken at 3 local places: 1)The local CPUSA office, 2)the local NAACLP office and 3) the local Democrat Party Office.

I'll believe only 1 poll....the poll on ELECTION DAY!

If we get through this entire election season without an all-out official, McCain endorsed media blitz about Rev. Wright, Ayers and “infant born alive”, and McCain loses, it will be political malpractice of the first order.

What's missing in all this is some stats: how many defaults because they took out equity loans, how many were "nothing down", how many had "no credit" and hadn't held a steady job for five years in a row. How many "explained" their bad credit rating as a "mere boo boo"...How many are related to "low income" projects, urban renewal...etc, etc..

I've seen people use home equity loans for patios, cars, pools, a truck...when they already had two cars...

Stop the Home equity loans. Take out a car loan or use your visa. Stop putting your house at risk and then cry to us about it.

Oh, yeah...and if you file bankruptcy, they never take your home, do they.

He’s right; 99% of people are blaming Bush and Republicans for the financial meltdown. The MSM is either too stupid or too corrupt to report what is actually happening and why, so they simply parrot the Dems talking point that this is the fault of deregulation (i.e., Republicans). Nothing the Republicans say from here on out will get a moment of air-time.

The election is over unless something big happens on the foreign policy side and Obama screws up in a very public way. At this point, I don’t see that happening. There is nothing that McCain-Palin can do now to turn this around; they will not even be allowed to get a word in edgewise (so far, McCain’s response has been lame anyway).

“Independents, key swing voters, now break for Obama, 53 percent to 39 percent”

I call BULLSH*T....
A poll without the voter ID listed is WORTHLESS. How high did they have to push the Dem bias to get to this?

GAFFNEY: Without America
Frank J. Gaffney Jr.
Tuesday, September 23, 2008

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad listens during a joint press conference of the D-8 Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Tuesday, July 8, 2008. Ahmadinejad has urged the next U.S. government to restore America’s international image by respecting justice and human rights. Associated Press.

Sen. Barack Obama speaks Wednesday during a rally in Las Vegas. (Associated Press)

COMMENTARY:

Q. What do Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Barack Obama have in common?

A. The president of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Democratic candidate for president of the United States of America have both chosen to spend much of their lives in the company of people virulently hostile to this country. At least some of them seek to bring about, as Mr. Ahmadinejad puts it, a “world without America.”

I don’t think +9 Dem in party ID is much of an oversample. All pollsters agree that this year R percentage is way down.
I actually think Rasmussen may be wrong here, and Gallup happens to be closer to the real breakdown.

Pollster D R I (Dem-Rep)
Research 2000: 35 26 30 +9
Diageo/Hotline: 41 36 19 +5
Rasmussen: 39 33.5 27.5 +5.5
Gallup: 35 26 33 +9
ABC: 38 28 29 +10

In most polls McCain runs 5-6 percent ahead of the party ID gap, in this poll for some reason he did not - that may be an outlier.

I think he is about 3% behind right now; way behind in CO and VA, and about even in OH, NV and FL. He needs: (a) decent debate performance from himself and Palin; (b) a week of calm in the credit and stock markets.

Otherwise Obama wins, and it will not be that close.

They are walking door to door making tons of calls. They will win if we don’t get our behinds going. Send in money, see what you can do to help the McCain/Palin campaign.

I think that the MAIN thing is that EVERYBODY do whatever
they can to make SURE that ALL McCain-Palin supporters get
out on election day and VOTE for McCain-Palin !!!

My wife is Chinese and so I know quite a few Chinese
people. One 30 YO Chinese man I know just recently got
his U.S. citizenship, and was interested in voting in this
years election. So I went to the local Library in Garland,
TX and got a voter registration card for him. I helped him
fill it out and we mailed it out. He got his voter card
just this last Monday and he IS VOTING FOR McCain-Palin !!!

My wife is in the process of getting her citizenship too
but looks like it ain’t gonna happen in time to get her
registered by the Oct. 6th deadline, unfortunately. :(

Anyway, PLEASE MAKE SURE ALL McCain-Palin supporters
GET OUT to their polling place on election day !!!!!

Remember: The ONLY POLL that counts is the one that takes
place on November 4th !!!!
