NEW YORK (CBS) ― Already under fire for his tax troubles, Manhattan Congressman Charles Rangel really put his foot in his mouth on Friday.
In a CBS 2 HD exclusive interview Rep. Rangel called Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin "disabled."
The question was simple. Why are the Democrats so afraid of Palin and her popularity.
The answer was astonishing.
"You got to be kind to the disabled," Rangel said.
That's right. The charman of the powerful House Ways & Means Committee called Palin disabled -- even when CBS 2 HD called him on it.
CBS 2 HD: "You got to be kind to the disabled???"
Rangel: "She's disabled."
"There is no question about politically it's a nightmare to think that a person's foreign policy is based on their ability to look at Russia from where they live."
Republicans think Rangel's comments are insulting as well as shocking.
"Charlie Rangel's comments are clearly disgraceful," Rep. Peter King, R-Long Island, said. "This is just another liberal Democrat who can't accept an independent woman running for president."
King, who is co-chair of the McCain-Palin campaign in New York, watched Rangel's comments with CBS 2 HD. He was particularly upset because Palin's 4-month-old son, Trig, is disabled. He has Down's syndrome.
"We should be sensitive to her or any woman who has a child or family member who has any afflciiton at all," King said. "And so to use the word disabled in the conetxt of a female candidate for vice president who has a child who is disabled really is wrong. Charlie owes her and the entire disbale community and appology."
Advocates for the disabled are also upset.
((sot michael imperiale 135028) "It makes me feel as if he's trying to put her down, trying to say she's not good for the presidency or the vice presidency," Michael Imperiale said.
"A disabled president ran this country. He was didabled. His name was Roosevelt."
a spokesman for the McCain-Palin campaign also piled on, saying that this kind of rhetoric has no place in politics.
Your post made me think of (with apologies to Monty Python), Rangel singing:
“I’m a black democRAT and I’m okay,
I can say dumb things all day!”
Do the ‘Rats wake up every morning and say “Well, how can I do my part to lose the election TODAY?” ;)
"Let's face it...Congress is just a place where we send mediocre (men) to be Earl Scheibed into looking kinda vaguely consequential, and politics is just another BS world where 'my esteemed colleague' means 'this pr***k here'."
/Dennis Miller, "Raw Feed" 2003
What is Obama’s comment? Since it is going to be his completely Partisan Democratically led White House without any input from the evil Republicans. Remember the Change that he is talking about is Changing Capitalism to Socialism... Changing a country that was once leaning Center Right to a Country that leans Far left how can anyone calling themselves Conservative even slightly Conservative think about voting for this Obamination. He is Anti-Conservative. However, there will be Plenty of room at the Table for ilk like Rangle. So I guess Obama will say something like “ That is not something that the Charlie Rangle I thought I knew would say”..... Snicker, Snicker... then under his breath I would have called her a retard.
This casual slander by Rangel is right in line with, and all of a piece with Obama’s “lipstick on a pig” remark, which drew instantaneous rollicking applause from the crowd it was addressed to: they are both proof that the unprecedented imagery and associations surrounding the reality of Sarah Palin have gotten so far into the heads of these male Democrat thug/demagogues, that they can’t be responsible for what they say, or how often they show the Freudian slips they’re wearing.
Are you kidding? The welfare cases and the elite Manhattan cocktail party goers will probably throw the creature a parade. He perfectly represents the arrogance and pompousness of Manhattan.
Sadly, you’re right.
Charlie Rangel better start his Aricept prescription. He is really losing contact with reality.
Barack Obama’s surrogates have picked up where they left off with Sen. Clinton. Obama owns the votes of “progressive” women, and is openly behaving in a way consistent with that fact. Do you know why Barack Obama thinks that women shouldn’t wear wristwatches....
That is if anybody hears about it. Most people wouldn’t have any idea what is going on outside of their own personal lives unless a story is either covered on network news, or unless there is a written headline of the story. Knowing the despicable nature of our disgusting and beneath contempt mainstream media, just how much publicity do you think this will get exactly? Meanwhile the media is all over Palin for ridiculously flimsy Troopergate “scandal” as if it involved her associating with a known terrorist....
Sorry for the rant, but lately I am just becoming more and more disgusted with the actions of the media, and with Obama and his supporters, every single day.
Well I guess it’s fair Charlie— We all think you’re retarded.
Page the PUMAs postehaste!!!
This from a liberal who can’t remember to pay his taxes.
A foolish comment.
If not, I’m sure Sean Hannity will be all over it tomorrow night like a duck on a June bug!! :-)
If that's the case, I suppose then that Charlie is syphilitic, ‘cuz that's the only reason someone would ever say that about GOV Palin.
What a beautiful picture, Jeff!
Charlie Rangel is a butt-head!
They are running scared! Let them just keep digging!
“A disabled president ran this country. He was didabled. His name was Roosevelt.”
And wasn’t JFK disabled too? But did a good job keeping it hidden?
I still want to know what is in the trunk of Rangel’s Mercedes towed from the congressional garage
Well, it would be nice to know. Probably piles of cash to put in HIS freezer!
Did the authorities tow it? I haven’t heard this.
