Experts Don't Yahoo! Over Palin's E-Mail Practices
ABC News ^ | September 18, 2008 | Justin Rood

It's not a great idea to run a government using Yahoo! e-mail accounts.

Gov. Sarah Palin's e-mail habit of using a private account to communicate with aides echos the worst practices of the Bush administration, says one expert.

That's the word from experts, anyway, reacting to news that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's Yahoo! e-mail had been hacked earlier this week. McCain's vice-presidential pick apparently used the accounts to communicate with key aides about government business.

The practice is dangerous, said experts, and can run counter to laws ensuring government is open and accountable -- a tough point for Palin, who has made "open government" a catchphrase of her political identity.

By using non-governmental email systems, "Your information is out there available, beyond the official mechanisms there to protect it," said Amit Yoran, the nation's first cybersecurity chief. Yoran is now CEO of Netwitness Corp., a computer security firm for government and private entities.

"When she's communicating about government programs, that information is not being protected with the typical precautions the government has put in place in its own risk management process," said Yoran.

Moreover, a hacked account could be used to falsify communications, noted Yoran – a point proven by one of the hackers, who used Palin's account to send a message to one of her assistants.

Two Yahoo! email accounts belonging to Palin were hacked early Tuesday by a group calling itself 'Anonymous'. Screen shots of her inbox were posted online, as well as a screenshot showing an email of an apparently personal nature from a Palin appointee to the governor.

I see ABC, so its not the crime that is the story. Forget how the e-mails were obtained, that ain’t the story. Oh no, nothing to see there.

I wish someone would offer a reward for hacking into the personal e-mail accounts of everyone at ABC News or whatever other MSM organization that covers this story in the same manner as ABC. It would be like a bass tourney. The one who brings in the biggest fish gets the most. Then we would see how much the MSM likes and appreciates crime.

I’m not trying to make anything of it. Did I say that this lapse in judgement disqualifies her from public office? NO. I said quite the opposite in fact. You make a mistake, learn a lesson, and move on with life.

None of you that have responded with such anger have defended the notion that it’s a good idea to e-mail your campaign staff and aides using Yahoo. Not a one.

You know, it’s okay to make mistakes. This is the same crap the 0bama worshippers do. No one is above criticism when it’s warranted.

This is actually a chance for McCain/Palin to shine.

How they handle this cr@p will determine how they are handled by the MSM in the future.

They need to nail the perps to the wall on this one so that everyone targeting the ticket with shady tactics will think twice before they start making issues out of such things as what brand of feminine pads Palin uses or if McCain uses Depends or not.

This is a Presidential election for the highest office on the planet and these stupid things are the important topics and issues?

These tactics are very telling of the character makeup of the opposition.

OPFOR is Stuck on Stupid

Hey folks, normal email is not secure.

That is correct, and cannot be repeated often enough. E-MAIL is NOT SECURE!

The only way to ensure security is to encrypt the message and use very strong passwords at both ends. Then, even if it is intercepted, it cannot be understood.

Sorry, but it *is* pretty stupid to use Yahoo to conduct official business,/i>

Alright then MSM genius, according to you she conducted *all* of her state business via yahoo.

Why not substantiate the smear with some details then... or is it just a smear.

Don't fall for the big lie coming out of the media - public service announcement.

Oh for goodness sake. You people act like a bunch of neurotics. The bar is raised for public figures, don’t you understand that?

And no, I don’t use Yahoo, Gmail or Hotmail when I’m communicating with anyone I have a work relationship with, even if the communication is not of a professional nature. Why? Because I know better. Hopefully she does too.

I love Palin, but can’t disagree that using Yahoo! (or any other similar) email for business is less than genius.

Except it appear that Palin did not use this personal account to conduct state business, so your comment doesn't seem to apply to her.

Mea culpa and profound apologies to all. I (ashamedly) got hooked by an instance of fake but accurate reporting. Good grief, the folks not getting alternative media haven't a chance at the truth.

It’s unprofessional (and dangerous) to correspond with your co-workers (that is what aides and campaign staff are...right? Right?) using free e-mail accounts from Yahoo.

..Baloney! It is improper to perform personal business using the government's e-mail system. Using Yahoo or another external e-mail system for seemingly private conversations that carry no critical information is the proper way to confer with co-workers when discussing other than job-related/classified information.

..It's obviously not OK that her e-mail got hacked, and the hacker should be prosecuted.

Why do they keep reporting that she used her personal email to do Government work? Was there emails that were released that substantiate this? I thought that of the ones that were released they were personal in nature?

Did I miss something? I know she emailed an aide, but do we know that it was government dealings as opposed to personal? What did they say?

I am going to say this again, and this time I’m going to yell so that people might read it and refrain from making uninformed statements like you did:

You must be a democrat! They always do things that tend to offend the very ones they are trying to influence. Mabe you could have put your text between the HTML Bold tags < b > Your Text Here < /b >. Then perhaps more people would have taken the time to read it.

She was not using the yahoo account for business purposes! The hacker himself has stated that he hoped to find such evidence, but that there was nothing there that was incriminating. Don’t believe everything the msm tells you in articles like this. You are being duped by “journalists” who want you to do exactly what you did - just assume that, because they say there was “speculation” that she was using the email account for state business that it must be true, when all of the evidence shows that the emails that were found in this account were personal emails, not state business. The most “damning” email, if you will, was between her and the lt. Governor and all they were doing was complaining about a radio talk show host. That is a personal political email, not an official state business email, so the appropriate place for it was in her personal email account.

You're obviously not a liberal at heart. Liberals refuse to acknowledge facts when presented to them, much less actually admit being duped.
