McCain goes on offense, links Obama to credit crisis
hotair.com ^ | September 18, 2008 | Ed Morrissey

John McCain shifted gears in Iowa today and reminded voters in Cedar Rapids that he predicted the outcome of the credit crisis two years ago, and few bothered to act. McCain also aggressively painted Barack Obama as a prime example of do-nothing politicians co-opted by lobbyist money. His speech pointed out the amount of money Obama has received from Fannie/Freddie donors and the advisers he uses that helped create the crisis (emphases mine):

Senator Obama talks a tough game on the financial markets but the facts tell a different story. He took more money from Fannie and Freddie than any Senator but the Democratic chairman of the committee that regulates them. He put Fannie Mae’s CEO who helped create this disaster in charge of finding his Vice President. Fannie’s former General Counsel is a senior advisor to his campaign. Whose side do you think he is on? When I pushed legislation to reform Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, Senator Obama was silent. He didn’t lift a hand to avert this crisis. While the leaders of Fannie and Freddie were lining the pockets of his campaign, they were sowing the seeds of the financial crisis we see today and enriching themselves with millions of dollars in payments. That’s not change, that’s what’s broken in Washington.

Didn’t I see a few days that The Obama actually advocated for these lending practices when he was shilling for ACORN in Chicago?

I am not sure if the bill itself really has much weight against Obama. Obama proposed a bill in 2006 himself after all, and he introduced it. McCain just cosponsored the 2005 bill.

But, the fact McCain was aware of of the problem before Obama, even if just a year or six months, is a big deal, as well as the contributions Obama got from them.

Why did it take him two days for this response?

What, get ahead of it too early and not let the other side get all invested in the issue before tearing them apart?

Sometimes it's important to keep feeding your opponent the rope...

A response like this, after Obama and his goons have hyped this incessantly, will IMHO resonate more with voters than if McCain had immediately said it. People are going to say "What a hypocrite! I thought he was a new breed of politician."

Nice work. Now make it into a series of tv commercials. Even if you’re only going to put them on the web for now.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV): “No One Knows What To Do.” “The Democratic-controlled Congress, acknowledging that it isn’t equipped to lead the way to a solution for the financial crisis and can’t agree on a path to follow, is likely to just get out of the way. Lawmakers say they are unlikely to take action before, or to delay, their planned adjournments — Sept. 26 for the House of Representatives, a week later for the Senate. While they haven’t ruled out returning after the Nov. 4 elections, they would rather wait until next year unless Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke, who are leading efforts to contain the crisis, call for help. One reason, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said yesterday, is that ‘no one knows what to do’ at the moment.” (Kristin Jensen, “Democratic Congress May Adjourn, Leave Crisis To Fed, Treasury,” Bloomberg, 9/18/08)

exactly. the MSM will consider these facts unimportant background and refuse to highlight this key talking point on MSM newscasts tonight.
And to reach seniors, it has to be on the nightly news, or it didn’t happen. that’s the reality.

When AIG was bailed out, I didn’t like it, but I understood it needed to be done to protect hard working Americans with insurance policies and annuities.

Why should I be be bailing out a zillion dollar company?

Why should I bail out your investments, retirement funds etc?

Are you going to bail out the tens of thousands facing foreclosures?

Are you going to bail me out if I make an investment that goes belly up?

If not, why not?

Why did it take him two days for this response?

My guess, for what it's worth, is that McCain wanted to make sure that the MYM clearly identified that ALL the financial problems being experienced were based upon the Freddie Mac/Fannie Mae meltdown.

That's what I'm talkin' about.

We need to hear a lot more of this. The Dems are contaminated with this stuff and the stink needs to be pointed out repeatedly until Obomba is forced to fire some of his tainted advisers. Then the media won't be able to ignore it.

This is not the first time McC has tied Obama to the freddie/fannie debacle. Not the first time he has tied O’s advisors to fannie/freddie.

great point.....Obama already came out yesterday saying he was doing things when McCain wasn’t.....of course Obama acted in 2006.

McCain had him beat with 2005.
