I thought this warranted its own thread and discussion.

I’m way out on the left coast, but I’d sure love to see some of these ‘safe’ Demo seats go Republican. I hope the McCain folks are going to start campaigning with those down-ticket soon. We need some coat (or skirt) tails!

Pollsters do not have the capability of polling the Camden and Essex counties cemetery vote.

If you’re hoping for a Lautenberg upset then I think you’re going to be sadly disappointed.

Easy. Two weeks before the election, have Rudy Giuliani move to Hoboken (using the “Clinton Carpetbag”), and put him on the ballot (citing the “Torricelli Two-Step”).

Profit.

Though I think it’s highly unlikely Rudy wants to be a Senator anymore.

Of course you are right that this warrants its own thread.

Having said that the chances of Lautenberg losing are zero
zip
none
negative no chance in hell.

I guess he might be a little better than Lautenberg but Zimmer is a RINO. They've been running him for everything in New Jersey for the past few years and he can't win anything. If they're going to run Republicans that can't win over and over again in NJ, I'd prefer they choose one that has both a personality and a backbone, someone like Brett Schundler.

He doesn't have a prayer. He's a liberal almost as bad as Lousenberg.

I won't vote for him. He's a pro-abort.

I think the “Zogby International” results you cited are actually from one of Zogby’s on-line surveys of people who sign up to receive e-mails from Zogby (and who can easily claim to be a Bush-voting Republican from NJ when they’re really a Kerry-voting Democrat from Vermont), which are not scientific and can’t even be described as polls. You shouldn’t even look at those. Zogby does conduct scientific polls, which, while not very good, should not be ignored, but the on-line surveys are total crap.

Which makes your point even stronger: Lautenberg can’t even get to 50% with all the money he spent, and Zimmer could steal this one in November.

Duh! I should have looked right here on FR for more recent polling info. Again, the incumbent is notably under 50%.

Lautenberg leads 46-35, 840 LVs 4-7 Sep

While I don't necessarily agree with it all, I wanted to include Zulu's detailed response concerning Zimmer from another thread. I believe Zulu does live in NJ.

Its my understanding that Dick Zimmer is the third in a defective series of candidates backed by the Tom Kean gang of Limousine millionaire RINOs in New Jersey. I believe he only succeeded due to the influence and financial support of the Tom Keans and their allies.

Its also my understanding that the reason the Kean group wanted so badly to get one of their own nominated was to defeat a decent man, a good candidate, a solid Republican and a man who unabashedly ran in the Republican primary as as “conservative” - Joe Pennachio.

Mr. Pennachio, one time Freeholder, State Assemblyman and current State Senator, had long record of supporting all the values so many of us here on Free Republic support.

Dick Zimmer was a man who was out of office for many years and who lost his share of elections.

I believe he was chosen because his Republican values are so diluted that they meet with the approval of the Keans and their associates.

I hope Mr. Zimmer loses to Lautenberg. He doesn't deserve to be elected to the U.S. Senate.

The GOP in NJ is a large septic system filled with RINO refuse. They had a conservative star in Bret Schundler and they supported MCGREEVEY who they knew was in the closet from the day McGreevey entered politics.

There is no NJ GOP, they are democrats. They don’t want any Republicans in THEIR GOP.

Encouraging info pulled from the NRSC website:

Zimmer was ranked three times as the most fiscally conservative member of the entire Congress by the National Taxpayers Union and every year he served in Congress he was named a “Taxpayer Hero” by Citizens Against Government Waste. He fought for legislation to use unspent money from lawmakers’ office budgets to reduce the Federal deficit and led by example, returning hundreds of thousands of dollars from his own office account during his six years in Congress.
