The most important voters in close races are the ones that candidates can count on to show up on Election Day and seniors may just become the new "soccer moms" in this presidential election.
Older Americans have the highest turnout rate of any age group 69 percent in 2004. And they'll wield clout in this tight presidential contest because a number of the swing states, like Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania, have a lot of older residents.
"Despite the media's focus on the youth vote, the most influential voters in the McCain-Obama matchup are likely to have some gray hair," said Susan McManus, the author of Targeting Senior Voters.
Older people, who make up 24 percent of the electorate, are "called senior citizens for a reason," said Robert Binstock, a professor of aging, health and society at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio. "They register to vote. They volunteer ... and they cast ballots."

My grandma’s voting for Obama because she thinks he’ll save her social security. Ohhhh, grandma.
Amen! They get mad AND they get even!
I’m quite old and decrepit and a computer user.
I’m NOT voting for Obama because I love America
and I am patriotic.

“Barack Obama scares 7 year old girl [with his] Anti-American remarks”
LOL
That’s exactly what I was thinking.
Older people always vote in huge numbers. So, before we found out why McCain couldn’t email, I thought the ad was dumb for insulting seniors.
Not only can't he e-mail, but he remembers the disco ball fad and 1982. What a pitiful old man! Stupidest ad imaginable, given the fact that seniors vote en masse and remember all of these things.
1982: Joe McCain goes to Washington.
... And finds Joe Biden has already been waiting for him there with his asthma deferment for NINE YEARS.
All those old people who can’t use a computer because of arthritis caused by war wounds are probably going to be lining up to vote for Obama.
It almost makes it like hussein’s making fun of his lengthy record at this point. What a ridiculous, awful ad.
I’ve seen bad ones from all sides over the years, but this one’s about the worst. Even the music is retarded.
my husband is 75 and very youthful in body and mind and I get so offended every time someone mentions McCain’s age and how he will probably keel over momentarily. I hope it is offending others too —— all the way to the voting booth!
It is obvious such a ploy is the work of young and inexperienced advisers with no understanding of politics.
The Obama people have absolutely no idea how to recover from their falling popularity.
Ever since McCain became the presumptive nominee, Democrats have been ghoulishly obsessing over the idea of him dying in office. Their stance seems to be that once you’re older than 70, you might as well be a corpse. Surely this will cause some seniors to think twice before voting Democrat?
I am a computer user and have Microsoft Vista. I don’t blame John McCain for not using a computer.
Actually, his non-use apparently is because of his disabilities due to the torture he received in as a p.o.w..
BTW, I hear you. I’m allergic to Microsoft.
I'm sure Mr. Obama’s ad about McCain being “out of touch”, regarding the email issue, didn't play well with seniors who aren't computer savvy.
Obama says McCain is too old to be president, which means of course that old people are useless and unable to contribute to society.
That sure will make groups against age discrimination want to vote for Obama...
One of our most beloved senior citizens, Ben Franklin, made many contributions in science, literature and politics in his later years.
Nobama has many, many dorks and idiots working for him. Nobama will pay a heavy price for attacking Mr. McCain’s infirmities.
Dear God, rescue her!
