WASHINGTON, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- There were no surprises, no knockout zingers, but also no bloopers Thursday night in Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's first TV interview since becoming the Republican vice presidential nominee.
Charles Gibson of ABC News was out for blood and inherently applied a double-standard compared with the kid gloves George Stephanopoulos used on Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois on Sunday night.
Gibson was out to embarrass Palin and expose her presumed ignorance from the word go. By contrast, when Obama referred to his "Muslim faith" on Sunday and did not correct himself, Stephanopoulos rushed in at once to help him and emphasize that the senator had really meant to say his Christian faith.
By contrast, Gibson tried to embarrass Palin by referring to her Christian faith in asking people to pray for U.S. soldiers in Iraq. Palin countered by pointing out she was following the precedent set by Abraham Lincoln.
Palin also expressed her support for Georgia and Ukraine joining the U.S.-led NATO alliance. That statement was predictable and consistent with the current policy of the Bush administration. The policy has dangerously raised tensions with Russia, but Palin is hardly alone in the conservative/Republican consensus in expressing her support for it.
Palin's assessment of foreign policy was competent and not embarrassing. Although she initially exhibited ignorance of the Bush Doctrine on pre-emptive strikes that has been a central pillar of U.S. foreign policy after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, she recovered quickly and then made the case clearly. Tactically, she made the mistake of trying to be friendly and informal with Gibson, who assumed a superior, professorial and critical stance toward her. She would have been far better going on the attack to rattle him.

It seemed to me Gibson didn’t know what the Bush Doctrine is, as well. He said it was a doctrine of pre-emptive strikes. The Bush Doctrine was that anyone who tolerates or harbors terrorist is considered a terrorist nation and will be dealt with accordingly.
Ooo, ooo! Good point! Where are her crocodile tears over the "big, bad men" picking on her a la Hillary??
Why hold them to a higher standard? Because they control what a majority of Americans hear.
We do not have a free press in the likes of CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC. For the most part they play the same stories with the same information from the same point of view. Its more effective than Pravda ever hoped to be.
If not for the internet America would already be a completely socialist state.
Good for you, and thank you for your service.
Me too. I just want them to be questions that matter and I want the TOP of the other ticket held to the same standard (did anyone ask Obama or Biden if they thought they were up to the job, and if so, when they said yes, would they call taht hubris?) I thought that was a stunningly embarrassing moment for Gibson (or should have been).

If Lanny is frightened so easily, he needs a real man in the White House. I’m amazed that so many liberal men are going around claiming to be frightened. The women in their lives need to give them a good smack and tell them to man up!

I agree with you. The women on HRC forum are NOT amused by Gibson’s arrogant ugly attitude toward her. Obama would melt under that kind of treatment.

If someone could compare the Gibson/Palin interview vs Gibson/Obama interview. Gibson is so biased. It's night and day how he treated Gov Palin compared to the community organizer. It's obvious Obama knew the questions ahead of time.
UPI was bought years ago by the same group that owns the conservative Washington Times. That is the reason their Grande Dame, Ms. H. Thomas, retired from their employ. It is not AP.
A local funeral home advertises “Pre-Need Cremation.” This has both amused and perplexed me.
Now I find that B.O. and his dim supporters seem to be subjecting John McCain to pre-need cremation. They’ve as much as announced that McCain will die within the next four years.
On the other hand, I note that McCain’s 96 year old mother is frisky and more articulate than B.O. without a prompter. And McCain has been running hard for two years without raising his heart rate while B.O.seems near exhaustion.
Ha!HA!
I agree ,,,, 0bama will never cut pork .
When did Gibson become professorial and who made him the judge of who can be President. He embarrassed himself with his pompus condescending attitude. The half-rim glasses were way over the top.
Pray for W, McCuda and Our Troops
You bet.
She has no control over the editing of her interviews. Neither does any other candidate.
The media is not and never will be fair, yet she is not complaining.
Her grit and example speak volumes, no matter how they chop it up.
I just read this on Drudge. I am stunned that this came from UPI!
What was hilarious was her own gotcha moment. Charlie Gibson tries to say that Obama wants to cut taxes, and she replies, “He had 94 chances to vote to cut taxes or keep them from rising, and every single time he ended up on the wrong side of the issue.”
Charlie looks absolutely blank-faced over it. It was like he had gotten slapped across the face by a woman and had no idea how to respond. Hilarious!
UPI got it right, this made ABC and Gibson look like idiots and reminds 75% of American why they loath the Establishment media. Once again the Establishment media confused themselves for the message rather the remember it is merely the medium
“Blowback promised. Delivered November 4.”
I pray they are beaten so badly that there is no room for spinning out of it. A landslide of Reaganistic proportions!
I believe we will thump them like a ripe melon. Even with their questionable votes that I am sure will happen.
Everyone else here is pointing out how Gibson did NOT ask any serious tough questions but merely played pompous arrogant media games. Asking the same question over and over in his hectoring whining tone did not "Ask tough questions" of Palin but instead merely made it look like Gibson was desperately seeking from Palin some slip up in a response so that he, and the rest of the Establishment Trash Media, could then go into hysteric about the supposed gaff.
That's more than three words.
