Joe Biden Slams Sarah Palin on Down Syndrome Son, Stem Cell Research

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Joe Biden, Barack Obama's pro-abortion running mate, is coming under fire for comments he made today attacking vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin. After attacking her on abortion, Biden then slammed Palin on the birth of her son, who has Down syndrome.

During her acceptance speech last week, Palin promised the parents of disabled children that she would be their advocate in the White House.

Biden questioned that commitment by attacking Palin's stance on the issue of embryonic stem cell research, which has never helped a single patient.

"I hear all this talk about how the Republicans are going to work in dealing with parents who have both the joy, because there's joy to it as well, the joy and the difficulty of raising a child who has a developmental disability, who were born with a birth defect,' Biden said.

"Well guess what folks? If you care about it, why don't you support stem cell research?" Biden asked, questioning Palin's commitment.

The McCain campaign released a statement to LifeNews.com on Tuesday responding to Biden's accusation and saying Biden's comments on stem cell research were "offensive."

"Barack Obama's running mate sunk to a new low today launching an offensive debate over who cares more about special needs children," McCain spokesman Ben Porritt said. "Playing politics with this issue is disturbing and indicative of a desperate campaign."

Marjorie Dannenfelser, the head of the Susan B. Anthony List, a pro-life women's group, also took strong exception to Biden's "caustic" comments.

"Biden outrageously implied that Americans who refuse to sacrifice innocent human life in the name of unproven, desperate attempts to cure our nation’s ills through embryo-destructive research somehow don't really care about children," she told LifeNews.com.

"I am a mother of five children, one with a mental disability. The fact that Joe Biden questioned the compassion of parents like me – Governor Sarah Palin, among them – makes me sputter in disbelief," she added.

During her speech, Palin told the more than 37 million Americans watching: To the families of special-needs children all across this country, I have a message: For years, you sought to make America a more welcoming place for your sons and daughters.

She continued, "I pledge to you that if we are elected, you will have a friend and advocate in the White House."

What do you call a Liberal attacking a Down's Syndrome Child? It's an intellecutally fair fight.

Biden conveniently leaves out the difference between stem cell and embryonic stem cell research.

If you guys didn't say it I would have had to.

I am a Biologist. While stem cell therapy (or more likely ‘gene’ therapy) has the potential to cure or treat many genetic defects, Down syndrome is NOT one of them, being the result of having an extra (non sex)chromosome, namely number 21 (Trisomy 21 being the genetic term for Down Syndrome).

People with Down Syndrome are the sweetest and most loving people. Only Biden could be so stupid as to go after Sarah Palin by making the tortuous logic that if you have a child with a developmental defect you MUST be for using prenatal stem cells in an unlimited and wholesale fashion.

Hypocrisy is the cardinal sin in Liberal land. And they attempt to describe how large it is, even when it is only a speck in their own eye. Only a libtard is so stupid as to be against something until their own feelings get involved and then ‘ethics be damned, I gots ta gets me some of dem stem cells’; and think someone else is being hypocritical for actually taking a principled stand even if it works counter to your own self interest (about which Biden is mistaken in the first place).

I hope that this doesn't mushroom. Let there be no excuse for Biden to bow out and a new veep candidate named. I'd like to see the mis-steps and gaffes happen around mid-october.

So please Mr. Obama keep your mutt muzzled for a few more weeks.

The 2008 GOP platform calls for a ban on private research as well.

I was under the impression that federal funding was the issue, not the research itself.

You are exactly right and the reason that private corporations aren't willing to put a penny into embryonic stem cells research even though they put BILLIONS into adult stem cell research is because they know a bad investment when they see one.

Sarah Palin stands alone on the issue of Embryonic Stem Cell Research.
Obama, Biden and McCain all support Embryonic Stem Cell Research.

Unbelievable that a supposed Catholic, would criticize a non-Catholic, for a view, he himself, as a Catholic, should possess, but doesn't. It has long since been time to excommunicate this guy!

Get Biden, Pelosi and politicians like them the heck out of our Catholic church. They are a shameful embarrassment.

Joe Biden should have been excommunicated thirty years ago for his pro-abortion advocacy.

Too bad his Bishop doesn’t have the guts to do it...like a week before Election Day.
