Hurricane Ike Live Thread
NOAA/NHC ^ | 7 September 2008 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 09/07/2008 8:37:37 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane Ike is the fifth tropical cyclone of the 2008 hurricane season to threaten U.S. Gulf Coast states.

Reports from Turks & Caicos Islands describe 80 per cent of homes damaged or destroyed. On Sunday, Hurricane Ike's position just north of Hispanola was hampering relief efforts for devastation incurred by Hurricane Gustav and Tropical Storm Fay. The death toll in Haiti from Gustav reached 200 people.

Florida Governor Charlie Crist held a press conference Sunday morning shortly after a Hurricane Watch was issued for the Florida Keys.

Just heard from my sister, there is a voluntary evacuation for a few towns in the county she lives (Brazoria). She said they will wait until tomorrow to see which direction this storm is going.

It seems that Ike is determined to hit Texas, it just is not sure where it wants to land.

"I want to know what we are supposed to do next year when electricity goes out and the digital converter box for a battery powered hurricane tv won't work. "

After Katrina, I received two of those as Christmas gifts...I understand that after 2-19-2009, they won't work. I've never used them.

Yeah. I have TWC on and the guy says it depends on when the through picks Ike up. He said he expects it to start going more westerly soon. I don’t know if anyone has mentioned it but If this thing gets close to you or I and then makes that curve before landfall and follows the coast.....

I am SOOOO glad my parents moved from Rockport, TX to Georgetown, TX two years ago, after my dad pulled a Nagin and didn’t prepare to evacuate as Rita was coming at them (fortunately, Rita veered to the north). Rockport is dead-center on the track now.

How long do you think Ike will keep sucking in this dry air from the west? It seems to be giving him a hard time getting really well organized?

This one has me very worried for my hometown: Angleton, Tx. (30 mi due S of Houston)

Any landfall north of Corpus would hit them pretty hard. They are already starting evacuations of the barrier islands and Freeport.

Your dad was smart, they always turn north once they get close to Texas. I didn't evac for Rita either and I'm north of your dad (Galveston Bay). My area was a ghost town during Rita, lol, Town of 5,000 maybe 200 stayed.
