Republicans Lack Heart! (File Cease & Desist for 'Barracuda' Song)
TMZ ^ | September 5, 2008 | TMZ Staff

Ann and Nancy Wilson are p*ssed at the Republican Party and have fired off a cease and desist letter to the McCain/Palin campaign.

Specifically, the Heart women are upset that the GOP has used their classic "Barracuda" as a theme song for Sarah Palin. TMZ obtained a statement from Heart's rep, who says "The Republican campaign did not ask for permission to use the song, nor would they have been granted that permission."

The statement goes on: "We have asked the Republican campaign publicly not to use our music. We hope our wishes will be honored."

“Those lyrics are gibberish.”

In rock, they almost always are.

Ann Wilson may have “wrote” the song, but like the vast majority of rock n roll, it is the MUSIC, in this case the undulating rock and bass lines, that sell the song.

“I don’t think that they realize how petty and petulant the sound when they pull this crap.”

I see this as a “Catch 22.” If they were smart enough to realize how petty and petulant they sound they wouldn’t be petty and petulant...or dimocrats.

I believe this falls under what is called “Fair Use”.

Nope. Fair Use applies to the use of copywrited materials for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research. Not political campaigns.

Use “Stranglehold” by the Nuge instead - a much better song.

And I have no doubt that Nugent would be more than happy to let them use it. The lesson here is don't use songs from liberal rockers.

The song is like the #1 download on Amazon(or somewhere) right now.

Are they planning on returning that money?

I liked the ‘LET ME IN COACH’ song better anyway. Its choice was brilliant, though it should of been played right after she spoke, not after McCains speech. Brilliant choice but very poor timing.

And speaking of bad song choices, lets not forget that just before Bill Clinton spoke last week they played ‘Chain of Fools’ by Aritha Franklin, and the song they played when he was leaving the stage - Addicted to Love. I was getting to wonder if their song player was a Republican in a booth somewhere laughing his head off.

A little Heart band history from wikipedia:

"By the mid-1970s the male band members were eligible to be drafted to Vietnam, so the band relocated to Vancouver, Canada.[3]"

Barracuda is all about the guitar hook and the one word lyrical hook “Barracuda.” The rest is gibberish. As for rock lyrics almost always being that way? Maybe. I think there are plenty of examples of meaningful, well crafted rock lyrics. This just ain’t one of them.

"I’ve heard Gretchen Wilson perform “Barracuda” live. Maybe they should get a live recording of Gretchen singing the song. That’s chap Ann Wilson’s big fat hide."

I saw Gretchen Wilson perform Barracuda with 9-inch Nails on one of those Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction type shows. I have always loved Heart (saw them again recently w/Journey - Awesome concert, BTW ) But Gretchen Wilson has every bit the range as Ann, and the fact that she is young and attractive made it that much better. Nancy came out with her guitar about half way thru Gretchen's performance.

As far as getting a Gretchen Wilson version, I'm sure there are some things performers would just not do to each other despite any political differences.
