BREAKING: Sarah Palin "Winged" Her Speech Because of "Broken" Teleprompter
Red State ^ | September 4, 2008 | Erick Erickson

Posted on 09/04/2008 5:02:21 AM PDT by Virginia Ridgerunner

Halfway through Sarah Palin's speech tonight at the RNC, people following the speech noticed she was deviating from the prepared text.

According to sources close to the McCain campaign, the teleprompter continued scrolling during applause breaks. As a result, half way through the speech, the speech had scrolled significantly from where Governor Palin was in the speech. The malfunction also occurred during Rudy Giuliani's speech, explaining his significant deviations from his speech.

Unfazed, Governor Palin continued, from memory, to deliver her speech without the teleprompter cued to the appropriate point in her speech.

Contrast this to Barack Obama who, when last his teleprompter malfunctioned, was left stuttering before a crowd unable to advance his speech until the problem was resolved.

Sarah Palin. Winner.

We ought to come up with a variation of the "O" poster the Obama campaign has....

"Zero"

What happen to the good ol’ days when a speaker needed only a small list to outline their speech?

Those days died when every talking head in the MSM became "experts" on everything from creative writing to speech psychology.

I don't believe this was an accident. After her speech, it seemed like the talking heads all talked about her speech being prepared for her. It's as if they all planned to talk about how she couldn't deliver a speech without a teleprompter and a speech prepared by speech writers.

Everyone else in both parties use speech writers to help them, so why did they make an issue about Sarah's speech being prepared for her.

I think they expected her to flub it and they went ahead with their original talking point anyway minus the second talking point that she needs a teleprompter.

I was surprised they showed the teleprompter. I've never seen it before when covering other candidates.

Sarah was great. The only speech, I liked more was Fred Thompson’s.

This is really amazing. Anyone who does public presentations (and I’ve done a few) knows this is a huge challenge. I once had a terrific power point presentation all laid out and ready to go. The computer crashed right at the beginning of the presentation. So did I.

Again, she is an absolutely amazing woman. You never would have guessed this happened by watching her.

I know the exact moment you’re talking about when she looked down and shuffled some papers. At that time I wondered why she would look down when she had a teleprompter.

No matter what - with or without a teleprompter, with or without notes, it was awesome

Totally agree.

BTW- Rudy’s speech was wonderful! he is being overshadowed by the Palin performance but Rudy gave a GREAT speech too! “I didn’t know about this vote thing “present” when I was Mayor!”

Rudy had some pretty good one liners, but I particularly liked the simile from a lady earlier in last night's program, when she said "quicker than a DC lobbyist downing free drinks"....

It is probably near to impossible to find a large public venue not contractually forced to use union workers for all events.

The socialists know that controlling what people see and hear is tantamount to controlling the people.

Good thing Obama's teleprompter got fixed during his speech a while back. Otherwise, the below might have ensued. Wish I had the video.

Oliver: It's the 20th anniversary of "Wake Up and Smile!"

Diane: 20 wonderful years! And 20 years of this man giving us the weather. Tim Baker, how's it looking out there?

[ cut to the weatherman on the side of the set ]

Tim Baker: Heighty-ho! Well, we've got some mean storm clouds in the northeast, and a happy sun in the southeast! Back to you!

[ cut back to Oliver and Diane ]

Diane: Thank you, Tim Baker. We're looking forward to another 20 years.

Oliver: It has definitely been a fun ride! Now, I understand you've got some cooking tips for us, Diane. I understand you've got some cooking tips for us, Diane. I understand you've got some cooking tips for us, Diane..

[ a stagehand taps on the teleprompter, which keeps spitting out the same phrase Oliver keeps repeating ]

Diane: [ panicking ] Um.. ih.. it looks like we're having sme problems with the prompter here!..

[ Oliver and Diane are silent with stage fright ]

Oliver: [ fumbling for something to say ] The teleprompter on which everything we say appears on.. is broken..

Diane: [ trying to laugh ] Please! Let's get that teleprompter fixed!

Oliver: Uh.. we're having what's known in the business as.. technical times.. right now..

Diane: Uh.. well.. let's go to.. Tom.. Bulcher.. with the weather..

[ cut to the weatherman on the side of the set, stunned by the broken teleprompter ]

Tim Baker: Blank screen.. no words on it.. got to think.. must think.. [ pause ] Back to you..

[ cut back to Oliver and Diane, who are forced to "make something up" ]

Oliver: Uh.. you know, Diane, I had a notion the other day..

Diane: Uh.. well.. uh.. notions make.. uh.. this country happen..

Oliver: I.. I.. I was thinking someone should get a group together.. uh.. with guns to sweep out those ghettos..

[ the show cuts to quick commercial, then comes right back to its frightened hosts ]

Diane: I.. drive a red car..

Oliver: Make sure those poor people stay away from it.. they've got sores..

Diane: Let's.. uh.. let's go for weather with.. Jeff Shaker..

[ cut back to the weatherman, who's still stunned by the broken teleprompter ]

Tim Baker: Rain.. clouds.. fear.. I must control the fear.. Please, someone tell me what to say.. I'm dying!

[ cut back to Oliver and Diane, still struggling themselves ]

Oliver: [ breathing heavily ] Getting cold.. feel so alone..

Diane: I'm afraid.. I'm afraid.. I'm afraid!

Oliver:

Diane: What are we gonna do?! There's no words!

Oliver: [ taking control ] We must use the furniture to build a barricade! [ jumps up and pulls his chair to the floor ]

Tim Baker: [ panicking ] If we wait, surely they will send help, and make the words so we can be safe..

Oliver: [ loosening his tie ] We can't wait! If we wait, we die! I'm the dominant one, here, so I'll be the leader!

Diane: [ on the verge of tears ] I'm so hungry..

Oliver: We will live! We will live! [ lets out a dominant scream, as the show goes to commercial again. When the show returns from the commercial, the set is on fire, Oliver has painted a hand on his chest and started his own dominion. ]

Oliver: [ screaming ] The Order of the Hand will rule! The animals of the Zoo guy, Danny Usher, will sustain us. [ places a turtle over the chair ]

Tim Baker: But what if the box still refuses to give us any words?!

Oliver: You challenge my authority?!

Tim Baker: [ sniffing Oliver ] I smell from your scent that you are weak! I challenge you!

[ Oliver and Tim charge one another and topple to the floor fighting for authority. Within seconds, Oliver resurfaces with Tim's severed head ]

Oliver: The weatherman is DEAD! I KILLED the weatherman! His STRENGTH is in me! [ starts to chew on the weatherman's severed head ]

Diane: [ crying ] Make the words come back.. Make the words come back..

Offstage Voice: Prompter's fixed!

[ suddenly, everything returns to normal ]

Diane: [ shocked ] Fixed?! [ reading off the teleprompter ] That's right, Oliver. I'll show you how to make a cassrole for the holidays. Stay tuned. Because we're celebrating 20 magical years of "Wake up and Smile!"

[ Oliver and Diane cry as the show cuts to one last commercial, aghast at how poorly they handled a time of crisis ]

He’ll give a softball interview and let Obama lie and lie and lie. I will be surprised if he drills him on Wright, Ayers, Rezko, being against the surge after it worked, etc. BOR will let Barry skate.

I’ll be watching the RNC convention on C-SPAN.

You're right. O'Reilly is really more concerned in selling books and paraphernalia than journalistic reporting. He's all about "marketing", NOT journalism.

Rudy’s a prosecutor; I’ve been there and done that. You make your final argument to a jury in a murder case, you don’t have teleprompters. You don’t read from a text either. You know your material and go with the “flow” of how your presentation is received.

This was right up Rudy’s alley, and he delivered magnificently, as I would have expected.
