ST. PAUL -- The 17-year-old daughter of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is pregnant, Palin said on Monday in an announcement intended to knock down rumors by liberal bloggers that Palin faked her own pregnancy to cover up for her child.

Reagan was probably our best president. You do realize that the Reagans married on March 4, 1952 and Patti was born Oct 21, 1952, right? Would you have cast your vote for Reagan? Aren't you glad enough of us did?

Given the despair that I am told permeated the country during the Carter years, I cannot say what I would have done. I was a flaming liberal in my teens and early twenties. So thanks, but no thanks. I prefer to deal in actualities, not hypotheticals. Intellectual masturbation ain’t my style.

"Actualities", "hypotheticals" and "intellectual masturbation"? Geez, for somebody who has done so much posting on this thread, your response is nothing more than double-talk and a cop-out.

Reagan vs. Carter,I know is a easy question most could answer. Let the record show that you won't answer the question.

>>SHAME IS NEVER A MOTIVATING FACTOR.<<

I beg to differ. It’s why only one of my mother’s friends got unmarriedly pregnant in high school, and why she gave the baby up for adoption.

It’s also why junior-high girls do the vast majority of whatever it is they do. Peer pressure is a bitch.

Hard to believe that there were another 2000 posts before someone caught my creeping senility.

That should have been mother.

So from where you are from, you can run around and be slutty (as you put it) so long as you dont get pregnant. THAT MAKES NO SENSE. The pregnancy (ie baby) is not the mistake. The premarital sex is the mistake. The baby is the result of that mistake but still a blessing!

Onan disobeyed Gods direct command. Genesis 38: 8-10.

Right but you admitted that even you had premarital sex. So, your indignation seemed to be more over the fact that she had gotten pregnant than that she had had premarital sex. If we can forgive her for sinning and having premarital sex - I am having trouble fathoming why you can’t forgive her not having used birth control and thus getting pregnant. Choosing not to use birth control is not an immoral act.

No, dear, let the record show that I refuse to answer hypotheticals because there’s no reason to do so. Once one engages hypothetical questions, said questions are endless and less and less to the point.

When Reagan ran against Carter, I was 11. How on earth could I posit what I would have done at that time were I older? It’s an exercise in futility, at best, even if you won’t recognize it as intellectual masturbation (which, let’s face it, all hypothetical questions are).

If you read the Onan passage, it’s quite clear that God was punishing him for denying offspring to his brother—*not* for “spilling seed”.

Masturbation is bad because it elevates the Flesh over concentration on the Divine. But the Onan story has absolutely nothing to do with it, and constitutes an embarrassing misunderstanding of Scripture.

Why don’t you try looking up a little word called “Levirate”?

Nope, I was not. And as I’ve said on this thread, somehow - through the miracle of birth-control pills and condoms - I managed to avoid getting pregnant. It’s not that hard.

Condoms fail. Certainly you must know that.

So the bottom line is YOU Xena who has been complaining up and down on this thread about Palin's daughter, could have become pregnant too before marriage.

I think you mean common sense is a better motivator, not shame. Shame made your mother’s friend give the baby up for adoption. I’m glad she had the baby, but if the reason she gave it up for adoption was because of shame - that isn’t good either. Sounds like shame caused her to do something she might not have wanted to. Ask your mother’s friend now if she regrets giving up her baby for adoption.

Onan has absolutely *nothing* to do with birth control or premarital sex or even masturbation. It has everything to do with essentially killing his brother’s line by not giving him children—basically akin to murder.

Onan’s failure to give his brother’s wife children is almost akin to Cain’s killing Abel. That’s why he was struck down.

It has absolutely nothing to do with the supposed sacredness of male ejecta.

I didn't say I know voters who would hold the *pregnancy* against Palin. I said I know voters who think that the girl shouldn't be allowed to get married and keep the baby.

Many people think the modern phenomenon of delaying adulthood until age 25 is normal. HERE's THE MINDSET: a 17 yo isn't an adult and is not ready to be married. And, although most people should marry some day, almost everyone needs to finish college before marrying. The parents shouldn't let teens make such a life-altering decision. In a way, having to rear the baby would be a punishment. Although the teen mom wants to do it with all her heart right now, it really is selfish and short-sighted and doesn't keep the baby's best interest in mind. The youngsters know nothing about rearing a child in the real world, and it would be reckless to let them try. The baby is a blessing, and of course not to be done away with, but the time is just not right for the unmarried children to be parents. MINDSET OFF

I am referring to people who would describe themselves as moderate or conservative. They think the Hollywood types are grown-ups who are free to mess up their lives, but the youngsters shouldn't have to grow up so fast because of one mistake. In this aspect, they agree with Obama; they just disagree that the solution should be abortion.

I am surprised readers on FR are so shocked that these people exist and hostile to me for saying that they do. Voters who think they are entitled to an opinion about this are not simply divided into "abort" and "get married" camps.

“I have to question the judgment of a woman who would allow a 16 or 17 year old girl to get pregnant. What was the mother thinking not having her on some form of birth control?”

First of all, how do you know she wasn’t on birth control. Birth control is not foolproof you know.

Second, maybe her mom was doing the brave thing and trying to teach her children abstinence.
