Let Palin Be Palin
Weekly Standard ^ | 8 September 2008 | Bill Kristol

Posted on 08/30/2008 6:26:21 AM PDT by oblomov

A spectre is haunting the liberal elites of New York and Washington--the spectre of a young, attractive, unapologetic conservatism, rising out of the American countryside, free of the taint (fair or unfair) of the Bush administration and the recent Republican Congress, able to invigorate a McCain administration and to govern beyond it.

That spectre has a name--Sarah Palin, the 44-year-old governor of Alaska chosen by John McCain on Friday to be his running mate. There she is: a working woman who's a proud wife and mother; a traditionalist in important matters who's broken through all kinds of barriers; a reformer who's a Republican; a challenger of a corrupt good-old-boy establishment who's a conservative; a successful woman whose life is unapologetically grounded in religious belief; a lady who's a leader.

So what we will see in the next days and weeks--what we have already seen in the hours after her nomination--is an effort by all the powers of the old liberalism, both in the Democratic party and the mainstream media, to exorcise this spectre. They will ridicule her and patronize her. They will distort her words and caricature her biography. They will appeal, sometimes explicitly, to anti-small town and anti-religious prejudice. All of this will be in the cause of trying to prevent the American people from arriving at their own judgment of Sarah Palin.

That's why Palin's spectacular performance in her introduction in Dayton was so important. Her remarks were cogent and compelling. Her presentation of herself was shrewd and savvy. I heard from many who watched Palin--many of them not predisposed to support her--about how moved they were by her remarks, her composure, and her story. She will have a chance to shine again Wednesday night at the Republican convention.

YOu can't help but feel a bit excited with the selection of Palin as McCain's running-mate. As this election cycle moves towards the convention, McCain has campaigned more towards the side of conservatism. The addition of Palin to the team has boosted my hopes.

Palin may be the future of the Republican Party. She fights corruption, is not afraid to take on her own party when something is amiss, and is a normal person from the population.

Its so refreshing to see a politician run for president who seems more like the people you grew up around. Maybe the dream that every parent has for their child to grow up and become president can return to the mainstream.

My question is will McLame pull her to the left or will she pull him to the right? She’s going to have to be one damn tough lady to stay Conservative.

Why is there a pentagram in the middle?

Recall that (as Rush Limbaugh read on the air) Alinsky dedicated his book to Lucifer.

Cheers!

I’ve been quietly pushing for Sarah Palin since late May. She’s smart, savvy, very well versed on a spectrum of topics and is one of the few politicians today who’s quite comfortable inside her own very resiliant skin.

Sarah sucked all the wind and bounce from Obama’s coronation the day before and has also put $3,000,000 in McCain’s war chest since acccepting the VP slot, a lot of it from PUMAs.

Obama got a sharp kick to the gazzotts yesterday and I don’t think he is going to recover from it any time soon.

Jack.

I’ve heard this is the final 2 days to donate directly to the McCain/Palin ticket. After that they come under the limits imposed by the Fed. Obama has opted out of those because of all his Soros and trial lawyer money.

Afterwards, are we limited to donating to the GOP and having them support McCain/Palin?

Sarah and her husband will draw crowds in all the swing states. People will identify with them and I think they will love it. Plus..think of the thousands of parents out there with challenged kids who will also identify.

Yeah, I don’t really know. I hear there’s some kind of a limit, ending today. If you find out, ping me, please.

“Moderates like Kristol and his cohorts at The Weekly Standard cannot be any happier about Palin than the RATS are. Right now, the country club Republicans are mollified because she’s with their hero, Juan McInsane, but that will fade quickly and she’ll soon be as despised as the rest of us conservatives when they figure out she’s isn’t going to back down on abortion, government spending and oil drilling.”

Amen brother (or sister)!
Hell hath no fury...

Her campaign song should be Tom Petty’s “Won’t Back Down” (if that is the name of the song.

“Haven’t heard anything from Pelosi...wonder why that is.”

Pelosi already let out a particularly nasty response that McCain made a serious mistake in judgment.

No, the spending limit does not kick in until McCain officially becomes the GOP nominee, which is next Wednesday night. Until then he can raise and spend all he wants. After next Wednesday he gets the $85 million in federal funds. And he can hammer Barack Obama about every corruptocrat who is contributing to his campaign.

As my six year old granddaughter would say, "Now that's what I'm talking about!"

From what I recall, she's the mother of five well fed children. No need for pant suits for her.

That John McCain does have a good eye for women.

And talk about eyes. WOW!

Oprah’s Obama led by 8 points the day after the Palin selection. The American people may be “Democrat or damned” this year.

Palin was my choice from the first time I’d been made aware of her, about 3 months ago.

Me, too...

The Dems and MSM will go after her for the "inexperience" rap, but think about the comparison: Obama's experience is that of "street organizer" and "Chicago machine pol". Joe "Scrappy from Scranton" (actually Wilmington -- they can't even be honest about that) Biden has 36 years of experience as an inside the beltway Senator/schmoozer influence peddler. Is that the "experience" America needs or wants?

Think about the old Jimmy Stewart movie "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" or, more recently "Dave". Liberals everywhere loved those movies (and most Americans did)... In "Dave", I'm sure they swooned over the good Vice President's "how did you get into politics" story: "I was running a small retail store... I complained about the town government and my wife told me to run for the Town Council... and I won!"

Well here's Sarah Palin: "Mrs. Palin Goes to Washington" but it's the real deal. Yes, she's missing that "experience" -- of wheeling and dealing with Beltway influence peddlers. I'm thrilled she hasn't any of that experience!

I'm waiting for the first article to come out entitled "Mrs. Palin Goes to Washington" -- it may be a theme that will take McCain-Palin to the White House.

How bout getting off your high horse and getting your elitist hands dirty. This dirge is getting stale, either get with the two party program or go vote for Tancredo or Pukeannan and leave the rest of us alone.

You were so lucky to find a wife who agreed w/everything you say, poor woman.

Pray for W and Our Troops
