Its a dead heat in the race for the White House. The first national poll conducted entirely after Barack Obama publicly named Joe Biden as his running mate suggests that battle for the presidency between the Illinois senator and Republican rival John McCain is all tied up.
In a new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll out Sunday night, 47 percent of those questioned are backing Obama with an equal amount supporting the Arizona senator.
This looks like a step backward for Obama, who had a 51 to 44 percent advantage last month, says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.
Even last week, just before his choice of Joe Biden as his running mate became known, most polls tended to show Obama with a single-digit advantage over McCain, adds Holland.
So whats the difference now?
It may be supporters of Hillary Clinton, who still would prefer the Senator from New York as the Democratic Partys presidential nominee.
Sixty-six percent of Clinton supporters, registered Democrats who want Clinton as the nominee, are now backing Obama. Thats down from 75 percent in the end of June. Twenty-seven percent of them now say theyll support McCain, up from 16 percent in late June.
The number of Clinton Democrats who say they would vote for McCain has gone up 11 points since June, enough to account for most although not all of the support McCain has gained in that time, says Holland.
SNIP
The CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll was conducted on Saturday and Sunday, with 1,023 adult Americans questioned by telephone. The surveys sampling error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points for all voters. For registered Democrats, it is plus or minus 4.5 percentage points, and for Democrats who still support Clinton for the party's nomination, it is plus or minus 7.5 percentage points.

Will they do that in Arkansas?
Biden did garner 0 delegates and 2,328 Iowa votes 1% 5th place in his presidential run.
With numbers like that, the Obama-Biden team should be formidable. [/s]

Just three hours after the Obama campaign sent out its text announcement, the McCain campaign rolled out its first ad this morning, using Senator Joe Bidens own words during the primary season about Senator Barack Obama.

I believe I will now purchase a subscription to the Weekly Standard. Thank you.
>I dont put it past the Democrats to replace the whole ticket in Oct when they are 15% behind. It could be Gore Clinton in Nov. Just remember you heard it from me first!
I’ve been thinking the same thing, but don’t think its legal way. Not that that will stop the other party from trying (I lived in Missouri in 2000 when the dems couldn’t replace Carnahan on the Senate ticket but illegally announced who would replace him).
But does anyone know the rules for if an officially nominated candidate drops out after the convention? Does the replacement have to get so many signatures from each state? Would the Supreme Court have a say?
I think he was actually calling him Joe Bidenpence. It was his way of emphasizing Biden’s phoniness. It was based on the earlier phony Gary Hart, who changed his name from Gary Hartpence. In other words, Hart took on a new persona, and so did Biden when he borrowed the family history of Neil Kinnock in his infamous plagiarized speech.
"I think that the only reason Clarence Thomas is on the Court is because he is black.""I don't believe he could have won had he been white."
Amongst some of my hard-core liberal acquaintances is an avowed Socialist who thinks that Biden is a really poor choice. So if he feels that way, how do the Hillary-loving, Oprah-watching soccer moms feel? (And I am certainly not one of those. ;-)
“Well, clearly Biden did not induce any excitement for the Obama-Biden ticket did he?”
I’m guessing the elites thought Biden would be a big help because, after all, he’s on the Sunday morning talks shows all the time so he’s well known ...
That’s right, he is and it’s because he’s well known that normal people aren’t buying.
Good strategy.
More like the “Dead Moose” bounce, cause this is FAR more painful than just a dead cat (mourns cat) bounce. This is a ticket that is running on Higher Taxes with MORE Government spending, and one with ZERO details on how its going to do just that, just a TON of meaningless rhetoric. Granted people are stupid, thankfully there are not enough that are THAT stupid.
Hillary was the better DNC candadate. Bammie is done.
Biden would not give this guy a bounce and he’s a fool to think it would.
This was a complete act of desperation, completely undermines his “change” claims (how do you effect change by picking a radical entrenched partisan as your running mate?)
Attacking McCain for being in Washington just went out the window, since Biden’s been there about as long.
And Biden as a joke that he is, simply highlights how horribly inexperienced Fauxbama is... When the campaign has to rely on the VP selection to create “gravitas” the campaign is over.
I said up until this point Fauxbama would be lucky to get 40% of the vote on election day, with this choice, I now say he won’t get 40% on election day... PERIOD.
This is a complete desperation move, and a bad one. Every time I think the Fauxbama camp can’t do anything more stupid, they prove me wrong.
The criticism of McCain for having a temper and being old, just went away, because you have a guy with an insane temper, cusses like a sailor and sure ain’t young as your VP.
They didn’t properly vet the guy, which means something bad could come up on him that they don’t even know about yet.
Man, this seasons Democratic primaries and election cycle for the president is like watching a train wreck in slow motion.
“Smug & Plugs” - that’s good.
2008 may not be a Democrat year after all ( we hope!)
“Republican Party's favorable rating has risen 10 percentage points since April, while the Democrats’ favorable number has dropped, leaving a 4 percentage-point gap in the Democrats favor. “

Actually, at 35 years in DC, Biden’s been there a decade longer than McCain (at least in Congress). McCain was still in the Navy for much of Biden’s 1st two terms in the Senate, IIRC.
"Hell hath no fury like the wrath of a woman scorned." Words to live by.
I remember when Thereeeeeeeeza Heinz started her speech in a foreign language - no doubt the Euro-loving libs adored it, but there was a collective gasp from normal Americans. We may admire people who speak foreign languages, but we don't want to be spoken to in a foreign language.
How do they determine "likely voters"?
