CNN: Post-Biden Poll Shows Dead Heat (Obama-Biden Ticket Gets Dead Cat Bounce)
CNN ^ | Sunday, August 24, 2008 | Paul Steinhauser

It’s a dead heat in the race for the White House. The first national poll conducted entirely after Barack Obama publicly named Joe Biden as his running mate suggests that battle for the presidency between the Illinois senator and Republican rival John McCain is all tied up.

In a new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll out Sunday night, 47 percent of those questioned are backing Obama with an equal amount supporting the Arizona senator.

“This looks like a step backward for Obama, who had a 51 to 44 percent advantage last month,” says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

“Even last week, just before his choice of Joe Biden as his running mate became known, most polls tended to show Obama with a single-digit advantage over McCain,” adds Holland.

So what’s the difference now?

It may be supporters of Hillary Clinton, who still would prefer the Senator from New York as the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee.

Sixty-six percent of Clinton supporters, registered Democrats who want Clinton as the nominee, are now backing Obama. That’s down from 75 percent in the end of June. Twenty-seven percent of them now say they’ll support McCain, up from 16 percent in late June.

“The number of Clinton Democrats who say they would vote for McCain has gone up 11 points since June, enough to account for most although not all of the support McCain has gained in that time,” says Holland.

SNIP

The CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll was conducted on Saturday and Sunday, with 1,023 adult Americans questioned by telephone. The survey’s sampling error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points for all voters. For registered Democrats, it is plus or minus 4.5 percentage points, and for Democrats who still support Clinton for the party's nomination, it is plus or minus 7.5 percentage points.

A dead cat bounces more than that

I'm thinking this is more of a cement block bounce.

Many years ago I heard Rush refer to Biden as “Joe Biden-Pants”. Does anyone remember that and what he was referring to?

I'm sure that Michelle Mabelle is tightly scripted. They sure don't want her going off teleprompter at all. I'm hoping her arrogance will overcome her instructions and she will speak out away from the talking points. She is sure to bring us more voters if she does.

You’re right as rain about this.

My gut feeling is that round this time in an election year ordinary Americans carrying this country on their backs whilst raising the citizens and soldiers of tomorrow start to pay attention. Never mind that this particular election “year” has lasted forever.

During the summer of an election year, polls usually reflect voters’ registration rather than necessarily who those polled will vote for come the fall. Democrats have way higher registrations than Republicans so polls around this time should reflect very high leads for the Democrats. Once folks start paying attention the pubbie tends to go up in the polls.

It’s very, very telling that OBama, despite trips to Europe with stoned Germans attending rock concerts with the featured Messiah speaker and a prolonged almost laughable VP sweepstakes, Obama keeps sliding.

BUT....this convention will be the key. Cause if you don’t get a bump from your convention, especially as this is the event when Americans do take a moment to see who’s running, then you’re dead meat.

All signs lead to a blowout against OBama....so says I.

I don’t put it past the Democrats to replace the whole ticket in Oct when they are 15% behind. It could be Gore Clinton in Nov. Just remember you heard it from me first!

Obama may be the first candidate in recent memory to get a “negative” bounce from his convention.

I’d argue that if anything is going to kill Obama’s chances it’s his lovely wife, Michelle Ma Belle, the lovable, personable, sweet smiling woman that she is. And she really loves her country, goodness.

They’ve been putting her in pretty frocks of late and trying to hide that big, ugly chip on her shoulder.

It ain’t gonna help. She’ll sink Obama’s ship more than anything else.

As I see it.

As General George S. Patton Jr. might say, “CRAP DON’T BOUNCE!!!”

It does if you eat a rubber biscuit.

They’re hoping Biden will appeal to the clingers.

Ouch!

Some people I have great respect for that have worked on tons of political campaigns are telling me Obama has hit his high water mark and will continue to fade away. I'm not convinced of that yet, but this poll certainly seems very encouraging.

A poll of adults, after the VP pick, showing Obambi losing a bunch of ground? I'll gladly take it.

I noticed today that Barack wasn’t all that excited as he usually is while giving his speech. He seemed a little down. He knows Hillary’s PUMAs aren’t going quitely.

Fortunately, most States are not like New Jersey. So a national version of the Lautenberg-Torricelli Switch isn't likely to occur.

Post-Biden Poll Shows Dead Heat

Well, then, perhaps the Obama people need treat the Biden nomination as a beta version of their VP nominee. Their final, production version, could turn out to be somebody who's not such a dud.

Democrats are stuck with Obama, but, they could turn around and find some obscure fault, or "bug", with their "beta" VP nominee.

Just wait until real Joe Biden is presented to the voters.

Obama might as well have chosen Howard Dean.

I think you are right, she will be tightly scripted and coached. And as a result, she will be boring. Fine with me.
