CNN: Post-Biden Poll Shows Dead Heat (Obama-Biden Ticket Gets Dead Cat Bounce)
CNN ^ | Sunday, August 24, 2008 | Paul Steinhauser

Posted on 08/24/2008 5:33:40 PM PDT by kristinn

It’s a dead heat in the race for the White House. The first national poll conducted entirely after Barack Obama publicly named Joe Biden as his running mate suggests that battle for the presidency between the Illinois senator and Republican rival John McCain is all tied up.

In a new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll out Sunday night, 47 percent of those questioned are backing Obama with an equal amount supporting the Arizona senator.

“This looks like a step backward for Obama, who had a 51 to 44 percent advantage last month,” says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

“Even last week, just before his choice of Joe Biden as his running mate became known, most polls tended to show Obama with a single-digit advantage over McCain,” adds Holland.

So what’s the difference now?

It may be supporters of Hillary Clinton, who still would prefer the Senator from New York as the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee.

Sixty-six percent of Clinton supporters, registered Democrats who want Clinton as the nominee, are now backing Obama. That’s down from 75 percent in the end of June. Twenty-seven percent of them now say they’ll support McCain, up from 16 percent in late June.

“The number of Clinton Democrats who say they would vote for McCain has gone up 11 points since June, enough to account for most although not all of the support McCain has gained in that time,” says Holland.

SNIP

The CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll was conducted on Saturday and Sunday, with 1,023 adult Americans questioned by telephone. The survey’s sampling error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points for all voters. For registered Democrats, it is plus or minus 4.5 percentage points, and for Democrats who still support Clinton for the party's nomination, it is plus or minus 7.5 percentage points.

A dead donkey bounces more than that!!

The “donkey party” is in serious trouble with their Obambi/Biden ticket.

Just wait until a lot of voters actually learn something about both donkey party candidates!!!!

I don’t follow polling too much but IIRC over several decades the Demagogues often lose 10-15 % points from this point in the summer to the election. Seems to be b/c at this point it’s been almost all media propaganda but then people start to pay more attention.

I think Dukakis was up a lot at this point in time??? Then people started to notice what a squishy weasel he was/is and he slid badly. Susan Estrich did a masterful job with his campaign, of course. /s

Believe it or not, Kerry did just that in 2004 (get a negative bounce) - at least from gallup.

Of course, I’m all for Obama and Biden improving on that...to a -5 bounce. :-)

Dead cat bounce. That's exactly how I expect the Democrats to fare from this week's victim whine fest in Denver. I'll be glad when its all over!

Yours is the perfect thread to reiterate what I wrote back in May:

“Because of Operation Chaos, McCainiac will win in a land-slide.

Our job #1 will be to convince as many people as possible that they must also vote for their local/state Republican candidate who is running for the House or Senate seat in November.

We must convince them that they will be making a major mistake if they vote for the “RAT candidate (even if he seems/is more conservative than the Republican candidate), for this reason: McCain will not be able to come through on all the promises they like that he has made to them if the ‘RATS have a large enough majority in Congress to block everything he wants to do. We must keep ‘RATS from having enough votes to overturn his vetos.

If we can increase our numbers in Congress on McCain’’s coat-tails, we (conservatives) will be in a much better position to exert our influence to stop him from advancing the parts of his agenda we hate.

I cannot overstate the importance of our “Job # 1”, enough, but we should hold back until we get closer to the election (when the polls show McCain’s big lead) before we go into full-court-press in implementing it.

Friday, May 30, 2008 http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/2023515/posts?page=47#47

Addendum to the above: I think we can effectively use the energy / drilling issue as the wedge that will convince Americans to be willing to dump the congressional ‘RATS and go with the Republican in their respective states since it
can be demonstrated that the ‘RATS are the ones who are standing in the way even if they pretend that they have changed their minds (with the help of 5 Republicans = “Gang of 10”)

We must convince those 5 Republicans to back off of that deal.

I’ll have to do some research as I don’t remember the name
of the group, but I heard one of the radio talk show hosts interviewing the two founders that have/or will have an energy bill drawn up (#6566???) that has no ear-marks or other changes allowed, and are going to ask those of us in the grass-roots to have our respective congress members sign a pledge that they agree to vote for it. It will be with the understanding that those who don’t sign the pledge will have their names published so that Americans will know who to throw out of office in November, or at their earliest opportunity.

They plan to initiate this effort around the first of September or so. If anyone reading this knows the name of the group, please let me know.

Re: #68

I found the bill I referenced in my previous post:

An invitation for pro-drilling Democrats

Put it in writing, pals.

GOP House leader John Boehner calls the bluff of “pro-energy” Democrats who say they support drilling:

- House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) today issued the following statement in response to an article in today’s Politico that suggests Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has secretly signaled to rank-and-file House Democratic lawmakers that they should feel free to portray themselves publicly as pro-drilling if it helps them politically:

“My message to Democratic lawmakers is this: if you’re really for increased American energy production, then prove it by putting it in writing. Sign the discharge petitions House Republicans are circulating that will force votes on energy legislation Speaker Pelosi refuses to bring to the floor. And sign onto the American Energy Act, our ‘all of the above’ plan to increase conservation, innovation, and American energy production, instead of doing the Speaker’s bidding by voting against bringing it to a vote. If you aren’t willing to put it in writing, you’re fooling no one. You’re siding with the Speaker of the Drill-Nothing Congress and radical special interests that favor higher gas prices, at the expense of energy-strapped American families.”

NOTE: House Republican members have sponsored a series of discharge petitions on energy reform bills the House Democratic leadership refuses to allow to come to a vote on the House floor. Under House rules, if a discharge petition is signed by 218 or more House members, the majority leadership is required to schedule the legislation for a vote. House Republicans have also introduced the American Energy Act (H.R. 6566), a comprehensive energy reform bill to lower gas prices and move America toward energy independence through an “all of the above” approach. To date, however, rank-and-file Democrats have failed to demonstrate independence from Speaker Pelosi on American energy, refusing to sign onto the GOP discharge petitions and voting with Pelosi on procedural measures to prevent the American Energy Act from being considered on the House floor.

“I’m hoping her arrogance will overcome her instructions and she will speak out away from the talking points. She is sure to bring us more voters if she does.”

On the other hand, if she tries to appear pleasant throughout the whole thing, her face might shatter. Should be an ‘interesting’ speech. ;-)

BAD news but McCain can still screw it up. His VP pick matters.

Exactly right, MNJohnnie.

Plus, this is a popular vote poll, and doesn't gauge whether Biden gave the swing-state blue-collar bump for which they were aiming. If they gained those at the expense of a bunch of California voters, then it's a win for them.

No. Not even a dead cat bounce. So far no bounce at all. Dead cat bounces just enough to be discernible and falls right back down.
