Biden emerges as favourite for Obama running mate

Senator Joe Biden has emerged as the favourite among Democrats to be Barack Obama's running mate in the upcoming US presidential election.

Mr Obama is keeping his decision quiet, but his staff in Chicago and party activists who await a decision are buzzing about Mr Biden in large part because he can address two of Obama's biggest weaknesses - his lack of experience, especially on world affairs, and his reluctance to go on the attack.

The speculation is less of an indicator of whether Mr Biden will ultimately be Obama's pick, and more of a recognition of the challenges their candidate faces at this pivotal moment in the race.

Mr Obama plans to appear with his newly selected running mate on Saturday, with the pick announced via text message to supporters. Mr Obama also is widely thought to be considering governors Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas and Tim Kaine of Virginia, and senator Evan Bayh of Indiana.

Mr Biden, 65, was first elected to represent Delaware in 1972. He is a curious front-runner to join a ticket headed by Mr Obama, who prevailed during the primaries by making the case that he is an outsider who can bring change to Washington.

Mr Biden is a charismatic and hard-charging campaigner with a compelling personal story — his wife and daughter were killed in a car accident a few weeks after he was first elected, but two sons survived serious injuries in the crash. Mr Biden commuted home to Wilmington daily to care for them, a practice he continues to this day. His oldest son, Beau, is now Delaware's attorney general and a National Guard member whose unit is being deployed to Iraq in October.

Mr Biden got another scare 10 years ago, when two brain aneurysms kept him out of the senate

“Obama has too much ego and not enough life insurance to put Hillary on the ticket.”

Well, there is THAT.

No offense, but if his attack dog abilities were effective, then why did he only poll 2% - 3% in the primaries? He is a very well known senator who most American voters have seen on network or cable many times trashing Bush. the war in Iraq and Repubs in general. I think he is one of the most self centered know it all loudmouths that ever served in Washington. I have never seen him say “I don’t know” to any question he was ever posed. He’s got an answer for everything.

I would like to see that, because Biden a few years back hosted a party for Arab leaders at a conference in Europe I believe. Well as the story goes he was late to the dinner party he was hosting and they served pork.
What a hoot that will be in the campaign ads. Foreign expertise indeed.

That’s good, he’s harmless. I’d be worried if it was Hillary.

Go Barry, go. Pick Biden ---- please.
Senator Windbag would be a hoot to watch and listen to.

In his role as attack dog, he'd carry on, and on, and on, for so long that everyone would forget what he was attacking in the first place. And during the VEEP debates he'd run out of time with his preface that he'd never answer the question, or respond to his opponents answer.

I've yet to see a subject that could be explained it five words that he didn't use fifty.

Throwing a huge slice of the Obama supporter pie, the anti-war moonbats, under the bus. Joe Biden voted to authorize the use of military force in Iraq and these same Moonbats will be up in arms if he is chosen.
It also will fire up the Hillary camp, because it is an admission from Obama that he lacks foreign affairs experience at a time when that experience is crucial.

With the Russian invasion of Georgia and with Iran coming to a boiling point, it is not going to be an “its the economy stupid” election.

Biden is a jerk. But put him on there and Palin with McCain, pro-choice loses a few votes for o’bama and pro-life picks up a few for McManiac and we’re rid of hilary for 12 yrs. maybe.

I have been giving BHO’s VP choice a lot of thought.......
Since Hussein is such a novice, there is but one obvious choice to give him the gravitas and maturity he needs......
Robert KKK Byrd, the elder statesman of the Senate!!!!

I agree, as a Republian he’s emerging as my favorite choice for Obama’s VP - he cleans up nice and he’s well-spoken.
