VP Alert (McCain Camp Now ACTIVELY Calling Leaders on Possibility of Selling Pro-Choice Pick)
National Review ^ | 8-19-08 | Rich Lowry

Posted on 08/19/2008 7:49:51 AM PDT by TitansAFC

NR has learned that the McCain campaign has been calling key state GOP officials around the country the last couple of days and sounding them out about the consequences of a pro-choice VP pick. The campaign is asking about the reaction of conservative grass-roots activists to such a pick and whether a pro-choicer can be sold to them. This is an indication that the McCain campaign is serious about the possibility of a pro-choice VP nominee and that McCain leaving the door open to Tom Ridge last week may not have been merely a friendly nod to a longtime supporter. In this scenario, McCain's emphatic pro-life statements Saturday night and his pledge that he'll run a "pro-life administration" would have been partly an attempt to reassure conservatives in the event of a pro-choice pick. Here is NR's take today on why going with a pro-choicer would be a mistake for McCain.

The PA voters BHO loses are rural blue-collar Democrats—sportsmen and labor-types.

The ones I talked to sort of fit that category. They are recently retired. One was a self-employed contractor. The other worked in corporate. Middle class. They lean democrat but vote both ways. The one lady I spoke to voted LBJ-Nixon-Carter-Reagan-Reagan-Bush-Clinton-Clinton-Gore-Kerry. But she ain't voting for Obama and it ain't because of race. It's because he doesn't have the resume to be president, and because his wife is a piece of work. And because McCain has proven himself to be different from the usual republicans, who have really not done much to sell themselves to voters like this.

Should I call his local office here in Phoenix are is there a better number for me to call and complain?

See my post #88 for a direct email link. Or call that office in Phoenix. Whatever you do, do it. We have to let McCain know the ramifications of stupidity.

When your only principle is winning, you value nothing.

Then again, if you lose, your principles plus a dollar get you a cup of coffee. I'm not saying do ANYTHING to win, but the goal IS to win. It's hard to be an effective president if you lose. I think the word for it is priorities. The question McCain has to face is whether or not a pro-choice veep would lose him the election. He's promised pro-life policies, and has a record to back it, but I don't believe it's his highest priority, and I think it's obvious he's ok with having a pro-choice pick, if the voters will allow it. It's not a deal breaker for him. Perhaps it should be, but not out of principle. Out of necessity.

Hm.....I can’t even bring myself to opening the McCain mail, opening the email updates anything.

You would think a presidential candidate would want to fire up his supporters instead of stabbing them in the back to win favor of the media/democrats.

I may vote for him - but only because we have an Obama. Seems like a president would want those voting for him to vote for him because of trust, respect, and belief in his abilities. Yet, McCain always likes to kick supporters in the face. Does not build respect, support, faith, and money.

In fact, I read that George Bush is the big fund-raiser. See what trust, respect and belief in their leadership can get you? Billions of dollars.

But, guess McCain enjoys disappointing any supporter more than funds, respect, faith.

I think if McCain picks a pro-choice veep, he will lose, and I hardly ever make such unequivocal, blanket predictions.

I believe that McCain has it in his mind that he needs the white, older, blue collar Democrat Hillary voters in states like PA to win. He is also trailing among women and probably thinks a pro-choice veep can fix that. But for every Hillary voter he might get, he’s going to lose an evangelical or two.

Evangelicals WILL stay home, which makes Republicans more vulnerable than Democrats on moral issues. Look at the 2000 election where Candidate Bush was up comfortably in the polls until the 30-year old DUI charge. Enough evangelicals decided they couldn’t trust him and stayed home to turn a decent lead into an epic nail-biter. And 30-year old DUIs don’t begin to approach infanticide on the “can’t go there” list for most serious Christians.

Never in my life have I ever seen two presidential candidates try their $%&@$* to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory by repeatedly throwing themselves under the election bus. The one that wins in November will not be the one that runs the most effective campaign, but rather fails to outstupid the other candidate with their bumbling behavior and shoot themselves in the foot comments.

“I’m not saying do ANYTHING to win, but the goal IS to win.”

Yes, WIN by convincing enough voters of the correctness of YOUR views, NOT by watering them down so that there is no longer a RIGHT OR WRONG!

But, what do we do when we have no pro-life candidate?

Sit it out? Give it to Obama?

McCain is sure off-base here and his handlers. I keep remembering that our GOP gave us only a McCain as president. Sure seems the GOP needs conservatives in the controlling area of the party.

When you get a man without a strong core of beliefs, you get these kinds of sell-outs. A George Bush would never have considered any such thing.

This is just the forewarning of a McCain presidency. Don’t trust, don’t count on any strong stance on any issue - other than the ultra strong stance on doing what McCain wants.

Seems we have a dictator in the making in both candidates.

Can someone actually please start a “call to action” thread where we can all post the local and national HQ numbers and call?

Please?

His actions, unfortunately, demonstrate his intellectual ability.

I don’t mean to bash the man too much - but I do think he geniunely hates conservatives, especially after 2000 and would love nothing more to “punish” them(us) and to exile conservatives. I believe he really does enjoy alienating us as much as possible, as it’s his way of “getting back” at us for not supporting him in 2000. Ultimately, I doubt he will pick a pro-choice candidate. I do think he’s enjoying conservatives’ being uneasy with the potential of a pro-choice VP.

But this IS John McCain. Nice little preview of the next 4 years if “we” win.

Works for me. We need to do something. The website contact link is Contact John McCain or they provide info@johnmccain.com as an alternate. The phone number listed on that page is (703) 418-2008. I'd think these would be sufficient unless overloaded.

How do we go about setting up such a thread?

I don't vote for pro-abortion candidates. If those are the only choices, I don't vote.
