VP Alert (McCain Camp Now ACTIVELY Calling Leaders on Possibility of Selling Pro-Choice Pick)
National Review ^ | 8-19-08 | Rich Lowry

Posted on 08/19/2008 7:49:51 AM PDT by TitansAFC

NR has learned that the McCain campaign has been calling key state GOP officials around the country the last couple of days and sounding them out about the consequences of a pro-choice VP pick. The campaign is asking about the reaction of conservative grass-roots activists to such a pick and whether a pro-choicer can be sold to them. This is an indication that the McCain campaign is serious about the possibility of a pro-choice VP nominee and that McCain leaving the door open to Tom Ridge last week may not have been merely a friendly nod to a longtime supporter. In this scenario, McCain's emphatic pro-life statements Saturday night and his pledge that he'll run a "pro-life administration" would have been partly an attempt to reassure conservatives in the event of a pro-choice pick. Here is NR's take today on why going with a pro-choicer would be a mistake for McCain.

“Who sets policy the President or Vice President?/Just Asking - seoul62........”

Who takes over the Presidency if something happens to the 72 year old RINO? If nothing happens to him but he decides to only serve one term, who would be the frontrunner for the nomination in 2012?

Don’t give us “this pick doesn’t matter” BS, it matters more than usual.

“I will not vote for a ticket with a pro-choice candidate.

If that means that Nobama gets in since I refuse (like many others) to vote then so be it.

This issue is my line in the sand.”

I’m with you on this....is McCain really that out of touch? I don’t believe he can win without Romney.

I stole part of your letter. Here was mine:

I've been a Republican all my life. I first voted in 1992, and have voted Republican ever since.

National Review has it out that McCain is tossing out the possibility of a pro-choice running mate. My answer is: McCain will lose support of myself and most other pro-Life Republicans if he does this. I encourage members of McCain's staff to browse letters to the editors, blogs, and websites like FreeRepublic.com to gauge Conservative's reaction and understand the financial and vote risk with the wrong choice.

McCain did a great service to his candidacy at the debate this past weekend with his pro-life remarks. Any action that would dilute that stance will flat lose the election for him. As you can see by my record, I have been a long time financial supporter of Republican candidates and have worked many hundreds of hours campaigning nationally and locally. I have been withholding financial support this year until McCain makes his choice. Please don't let Conservatives down. You cannot win by picking up scraps of liberals. They already have a candidate to support.

I actually thought today for the first time about sending a donation to McCain. I guess I’ll have to hold off until I can be sure he doesn’t screw us with his VP pick.

If McCain picks a pro-abort veep, the danger is not limited to disgruntled conservatives staying home in November.

There could very possibly be a conservative revolt at the convention over the pick. Not saying McCain’s guy wouldn’t get in, but it could be messy ... and you know a revolt of any size would dominate the headlines.

My brother is a convention delegate, and he is a pretty loyal party guy as well as a solid social conservative. He was reminding us the other day (with tongue only slightly in cheek) that the delegates, not McCain, actually select the veep.

I really don’t think he would vote for a pro-choice guy ... and if he wouldn’t, believe me, there are lots more that wouldn’t.

It is not a question of who is setting the policy - it is a question of “who” the VP is in case he moves into the presidential slot due to death of the president.

I just returned the emergency MC Cain request for money with the comment: Unless he chooses a pro-life conservative candidate....no money.

Good for you! May I invite you to Contact John McCain to add your two cents worth? Why wait for a letter to go through, especially when it'll likely be canned on receipt? Let's act now.

I urge everyone to give the McCain Campaign HQ a call: 703-418-2008. If you go to Donations or Volunteer, you will get a very nice, patient live person.

I know it isn’t saying much, but there may be a reason why Romney (I know, most don’t like him either, just talking about strategy), didn’t officially drop out, he only suspended his campaign. His delegates are officially still pledged to him.

I have held off giving money to McCain, but after the Saddleback evening, I realized that there is a lot to like about the guy. I’d been planning on giving $$ to him as soon as I get some (long story!), but now... I wonder if he thinks that after his performance that night he has the election in the bag and doesn’t need to worry about the hard-core conservatives. Should I call his local office here in Phoenix are is there a better number for me to call and complain?

“I’m not thrilled about Ridge, but he’s hardly the worst choice out there.”

He favors murdering children. How could he be worse?

The PA voters BHO loses are rural blue-collar Democrats—sportsmen and labor-types. He doesn’t lose all or even most of them, but he loses enough of them.

It’s a combination of race, guns and abortion.

Maybe we should start a ‘call to action’ thread with numbers, email addresses, and template scripts? It has been a while since we’ve done that. It worked w/ Amnesty.

Looks like he is enjoying running against a socialist, anti-terrorist contender - lets him do anything he wants.

A big power play. But he fails to understand this shows his thought processes, his dependability, his true beliefs and his leadership ability. And, he is not winning in those areas.

Apparently his belief system is pure expediency. Anything that brings him the love of the democrats hoping to sap the power from the republican party during a McCain administration.

Looks like the man is not very sharp but merely a pawn in the hands of democrats - same as Trent Lott.

Excellent! I hope others use my link in post #88 to contact McCain headquarters. Now is the time; even if this is a bogus issue. We can’t take that chance. McCain has got to be shown what such a dumb decision would cost.

I’ve enjoyed Michael Steele analysis on the talk shows. Don’t know much about him other than that.
