NR has learned that the McCain campaign has been calling key state GOP officials around the country the last couple of days and sounding them out about the consequences of a pro-choice VP pick. The campaign is asking about the reaction of conservative grass-roots activists to such a pick and whether a pro-choicer can be sold to them. This is an indication that the McCain campaign is serious about the possibility of a pro-choice VP nominee and that McCain leaving the door open to Tom Ridge last week may not have been merely a friendly nod to a longtime supporter. In this scenario, McCain's emphatic pro-life statements Saturday night and his pledge that he'll run a "pro-life administration" would have been partly an attempt to reassure conservatives in the event of a pro-choice pick. Here is NR's take today on why going with a pro-choicer would be a mistake for McCain.
Please, please, please avoid the "loyalty to me above all else" pick!!

Tom Ridge is lame. If he goes pro-choice it had better be somebody high profile.
I’m not buying it.
Advice to McCain, pick a pro-infanticide running mate when Obama picks his pro-life running mate.
Why does he even lean toward Ridge? Even if Ridge were pro-life, he is a has-been who brings nothing to the ticket.
Source please. More hysteric bullcrap.

I won't vote for such a ticket. Period.
This is getting ridiculous.
Ridge and Co. would sink McCain. At Saddleback McCain promised us that his presidency will be pro-Life and the policies pursued will be pro-Life. He repeated clearly that this is his commitment to us.
Why would he RUIN his top performance on Saturday with this?? Maybe the media is making this up? This just does not make sense.
Why, after the performance at Saddleback and his apparent decisiveness on the pro-life issue, is McCain so hell-bent on screwing things up by choosing a pro-choice candidate?
If he thinks he can pick up PA by selecting Ridge, he’s delusional.
You see the article yesterday, from National Review I think, saying with Ridge it’s not ONLY abortion? Says this guy, who is supposed to be so strong on defense, was a supporter of the “nuclear freeze” back when he was in the House. So for McCain to pick him it would be bad on more than one level. He’d better go with someone else. Ridge doesn’t even guarantee a win in PA.
He needs to pick someone non-controversial. A pro-life midwesterner would be good.
I've never read anywhere that McCain was smart. In fact, I read just the opposite.
MCCAIN: At the moment of conception. I have a 25-year pro-life record in the Congress, in the Senate. And as president of the United States, I will be a pro-life president. And this presidency will have pro-life policies. Thats my commitment. Thats my commitment to you.
If he breaks this promise, FORGET it.
Who sets policy the President or Vice President?/Just Asking - seoul62........
aint gonna happen
On the other hand, McCain MIGHT be a dumb-a$$...
I think Lieberman is the real possibility.
