Russians move 2 SS-21 Medium Range Ballistic Missile Launchers into South Ossetia

Col. Sam Gardiner notes, in an interview with Amy Goodman on Democracy Now, Russia has deployed tactical nuclear weapons to South Ossetia. The SS-21 Missile launchers are relatively small compared to bombs that have already been used against Georgia by the Russian air force. However, this move does indicate Russia is potentially upping the game from a conventional weapons war to a tactical nuclear weapons war. Gardiner notes that at a news conference on Sunday, the US Deputy National Security advisor has noted these weapons arriving in South Ossetia.

Business Wire confirms the subject matter of the news briefing in Beijing. Link

Bush is back; gave a brief statement at the White House today. Said Russia had damaged its standing in the world.

Why do we still have to listen to that diplobabble.

SS-21’s are necessary nuclear. Are we certain of this?

No they are not. They can be, although by treaty they are not supposed to be.

Most likely they are non-nuclear. The Russians used a few against the Chechnians a while back. Range about 120km. Warhead about 120 kg, but it has been armed with bomblets, mines, chemical agents, and the AA60 tactical nuclear warhead.

So what are they going to do with those things shoot them at the Georgia capital?

Most likely, if they shoot them at anything.

So where exactly are the French, Germans, Italians, Spanish and British in all of this? It's their back yard, why don't they deal with it? Oh yeah, I forgot. They're a bunch of appeasing surrender monkeys with the possible exception of the British.

The Europeans are not to be relied on for much. Consider that Russia believes (maybe correctly) that it has them by the b@lls since they depend a lot on Russian natural gas. The Europeans seem to subscribe to that belief as well, indicating that any real action from them will be nigh miraculous (although I am certain we will hear of very nicely worded speeches).

As for your comment on Britain, they are actually the current reigning champ in terms of being surrender monkeys. This is in both in domestic and foreign incidents. In the domestic front they are biting their nails in a rush to turn London into a moslem stan (now police dogs have to wear boots, they apologize for having black puppies on posters, even straight pointed kitchen knives may be banned, beat up a thug and you could go to jail, etc). They have become a sissy-state.

On the foreign front it is just as bad ....British sailors got KIDNAPPED by Iran, and their comrades in multi-million pound Destroyers could only watch! Imagine what would have happened had the Iranians tried to kidnap some US Navy sailors ....they would have been blown to their 72 virgins! They tried the same thing on the French (who are becoming the real champions of Europe) and were fended off easily.

Britain is not the same land of Churchill.

(as the picture seems to confirm).

The picture is of a static display somewhere, probably Russia, not a tactical set up.

They are being deployed as a threat against Isreal, in case of an Isreali strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities

120 km (about 72 miles) range isn't going to reach Israel. Wouldn't even reach northern Iraq.

Wouldn't even reach northern Iraq.

If this really lights up, the SS-21's could be used to hit the Georgian army if they are entrenched on the other side of the Southern Caucasus range. The missiles could also be used to intimidate the Azerbaijan's. Can also intimidate the Armenians if they balk at being used as a Russian Armor refueling stop.

Old Sarge,

1. What’s your experience, gut instincts and intuition tell you about this situation?

2. Any wind currents offering any impressions?

Come on guys waken up! Stop listening to media hype. The SS-21 Scarab is a short-range battlefield ballistic missile. The Russians were using them in Chechnya back in the 1990s. Here is the remains of an SS-21 booster after being fired in Georgia by the Russians.

Please wake up. Take a look at a map. This is no where near their back yard. Not even the U.S. is going to bring forces into direct military contact with the Russians and especially not over Georgia. The Russians are after specific goals and not looking to occupy the whole of Georgia.

It isn’t a message of any sort. The Russian forces have used tactical ballistic missiles as part of their inventory for decades now. It is part of their military ethos and tactics to use such battlefield SRBMs. They were using them in Chechnya back in the 1990s.
