FBI to Review Raid That Killed Mayor's Dogs
The Washington Post ^ | August 8, 2008 | Rosalind S. Helderman and Aaron C. Davis

Posted on 08/08/2008 6:41:44 AM PDT by Virginia Ridgerunner

The FBI has launched a review of the violent law enforcement raid of the home of Berwyn Heights Mayor Cheye Calvo in Prince George's County last week that resulted in the deaths of the family's two dogs.

The agency has begun "reviewing the events that occurred at Mr. Calvo's residence," said Richard J. Wolf, spokesman for the FBI in Baltimore, which has jurisdiction over federal civil rights investigations in Maryland.

Courts across the country in recent years have ruled that it is almost always unacceptable for police to kill pets in the course of searching a home. Cases in three federal circuits have found that killing pets amounts to unreasonable seizure.

A scary consequence from these "no-knock warrants"...

4 gunmen bust doors, yell ‘FBI,’ loot home (Why No-Knock Warrants need to be banned)

MW, we agree. I was ridiculing the way the LEO groupies post.

The fact that 3 Freepers misread my post indicates two things:

1. I should write more clearly

2. This is something many of us here feel passionately about. How can we get our elected officials (who are proudly “tough on crime” to realize that we won’t tolerate this any more?

I penned my comment and posted before reading the follow-on posts-if your comments here were intneded to be sarcastic in nature, fair enough. I do not sense sarcasm though, nor do I see any common symbols or acronyms to indicate it as well.

Hopefully we do not have to endure the same treatment the good mayor (unless you know otherwise?) and his family did.

Regards

I totally agree with you. I normally support cops but this is an outrage.....shooting these two beautiful dogs apparently for sport...I agree and hope the maypor and his wife own the bastards who participated in this travesty of justice and own their sposes, their children. their homes, their future earnings and everything they possess....and afterwards the useless SOB’s should get a Chinese dirt nap and have their organs given to the needy.

I find myself sometimes in the same boat editorially...

When a few LEOs on a flawed no-knock get hurt or killed by a citizen with proper firearms and skills (whether or not he is killed or wounded in the event), maybe the states will re-look this foolishness and put serious interest into such warrants. Perhaps then the SCOTUS will be prompted to make it right.

The proper weapon to resist a home invasion is not the usual “thief in the night” weapon, but rather a high velocity carbine (not pistol caliber) or rifle with tough bullets-home invaders will likely be armored and well armed/organized.

The event in Wisconsin that made the news (again) with awards being made to the botched raid officers: They were most fortunate that the home owner did not grab his 30/30 or similar deer rifle and start banging away through the door... 3A armor stops buck/slug and most pistol rounds, but not too many hi-velocity rifle rounds....

God Bless & MOLON LABE

Thank you for the clarification. I was unable discern any sarcasm in your original post even the finely tuned sarcasm that I now see is there....perhaps labels?

I tend to give cops the benefit of the doubt but this is so far beyond reasonable.

No; the fact that 3 Freepers misread your post indicates they don't comprehend English: Optimistic, aren't you. Seems like the groupies are slow to jump in today. How long to get a bingo on the list?

No Bingo for you -- yet!       ;^)

You might criticize, but you would call the cops in a split second if someone was breaking into your house

Not anymore I wouldn't, I would call the cops for body removable only. I don't like to even see cops anymore.

They just want to go home to their families at night, so they can't take any chances

Lamest excuse ever! The rest of us would like the same priviledge. These no knock raids prevent that. But hey-the cops can sleep good so its all good-NOT!!

The cops would not have conducted an assault on the sitting mayor's house without orders from the very top.

This would have been something that the police chief might very well have done with great glee.

Police Chief Melvin C. High is black, and the mayor is white.

Were the races reversed, everybody would be screaming "racism."

It's OK this way, though.

If they "don't want to take any chances," then they should be honest about it and find another line of work.

They don't mind taking chances with other people's lives though, do they?

One may shoot the dog outside the door but the one inside will raise hell and the first person through the door is going there !

Sure, Obama is going to immediately turn to America's sheriffs to get out there and bust heads.

This is the PG county SHERIFF, not the PG cops.

Cops intercepted the parcel. The Sheriff's office agreed to undertake the delivery, which they did. In fact, they knocked on the door and someone got the parcel and put it on a table. They later on did the entry in force.

What they didn't do is first announce that they had a warrant ~ not that they didn't "knock".

Which means this really wasn't a "no knock" raid but rather something else.

There will be a reward (in Heaven probably) for someone who can come up with a name for a "unannounced knock raid".

This was the Sheriff’s department. Are you proposing eliminating the job of Sheriff?

The G-Men took out Dillinger because Elliot Ness, also of substantial Sa'ami ancestry (his folks came directly from Lapland), simply refused to do so.

He kept his focus on the Italians and Sicilians in Chicago. In fact there are some very good analyses on the internet regarding the possibility that it was actually Dillinger who did the St. Valentine's Day deal, and quite possibly to help out his ol'buddy Elliot.

If Ness had been of a different ethnicity, e.g. English, Swedish, Finnish, Norwegian, German, Polish, Russian, etc., he might well have taken down Dillinger himself.

In the East some counties are so urbanized they are called "Urban Counties" in law, and usually have a County Manager form of government.

Consequently they have both a Sheriff and a Police Department. In most cases the Sheriff's office serves civil action notices, carries out evictions, and runs the jail.

ko_kyi, don't believe he does that all the time. I distinctly recalled he was on the wrong side in the Bridegroom Killing in New York, and he may have copped a plea himself in the case involving the US Marshall's Service thugs who shot up a kid pulling out of a parking lot.

Depends on the case which side folks are going to support. Here they killed the dogs first. Frankly I don't care for dogs all that much and this never bothers me. If they'd shot grandma I'd been up in arms.

Unfortunately for the debate this involves Prince George's County Maryland ~ Stenny Hoyer country ~ and I try to stay away from that place as much as possible ~ this event might seem unusual, but in PG it's normal. And it's not a racial thing either. Black people run the county these days but it's the same old stuff that happened when white people ran the county.

PG's problems go far beyond what the Sheriff, the PG police and the various town police are up to.

In fact, the place might have improved over the days when they didn't have a swat team and telephones.
