WASHINGTON A plan to lift the ban on coastal drilling is stalled on Capitol Hill, for one simple reason: A Californian who opposes President Bush's proposal is calling the shots in the House of Representatives.
Despite growing public support for ending the ban, even in California, Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she won't allow a vote.
"I have no plans to do so," Pelosi said Thursday.
It's an example of the vast power placed in the office of the speaker, who sets the agenda for the 435-member House. Members can force a vote if enough of them sign a petition, but that's a rarity because it requires rank-and-file Democrats to line up against their boss.
In this case, Pelosi is going against a rising tide of public opinion. Faced with rapidly increasing gasoline prices, 73 percent of Americans now favor offshore drilling, according to a poll conducted by CNN/Opinion Research Corp

Thanks for the quote & link.
Both her DC and SF phone mailboxes are full!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
CALL YOUR OWN CONGRESS CRITTERS!!!
I did. I told them it RIDICULOUS to allow one woman to hold all of America hostage to these ridiculous gas prices. Said if they don’t start voting with common sense, I will work my fingers to the bone to get them all thrown out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They want us dependent on foreign oil.
They want to have more control over us sheeple.
When she gets down to 0%, can we kick her ass out?
These are the SAME Democrats that the Stupid Party run by the moronic Trent Lott the “Cheer Leader from Mississippi” —— agreed to “share power” with in a majority Republican Congress.
Remember?
Well - when the DNC is in control - they KNOW how to run the Congress..
Straight into the toilet above the squeals of our castrated Republican Congress Critters.
Where’s that pic of the faces of the Washington creeps on the gas pumps?
great speech!
Pelosi is a radiclib who agrees wholeheartedly with the enviro-nuts. The enviro-nuts have been setting public policy for the last 35 years. Anyone who thinks they are going to give up power now without a big fight is being too optimistic.
“We the people” will be compelled to throw the Democrats in Congress out on their butts.
We have some of the best environmental laws and environmental safeguards in the world. Compared to most other countries in the world, we have a very clean country. I like that and value it greatly. If we stay within these laws and guide lines I can not see what is wrong with developing the natural resources we have.
I love to tell this story. In the mid 70’s Maine was facing a huge water pollution problem. Almost all pulp and paper plants were discharging directly into the rivers. Many environmental standards were talked about and lobbied for and against. Fed up with the political hassle, a very logical old legislator proposed and passed legislation that forced all pulp mills to discharge their waste water directly into the pulp mill's fresh water intakes.
As you can guess the mills screamed but the legislation did what it was designed to do and today Maine has pulp mills that are as clean anywhere in the world.
Sad...Pelosi could not possible understand this level of logic and reasoning.
Again, the RATS show us just who is true Fascist party.
I’m just surprised that Nancy hasn’t purged it from the House website yet.
Thanks again, 2006 “protest voters.”
This is an excellent speech, but why aren’t Republicans communicating these facts to the American people?
I thought I read somewhere that the ban will automatically expire this fall and needs a renewal vote. Is this wrong?
