Village of Morton Grove to Repeal Gun Ban

Friday, July 18, 2008

Fairfax, VA. – Today the Village of Morton Grove moved to avoid imminent legal action by the National Rifle Association by amending its Village Code to remove the current handgun ban and incorporate sections of the Illinois Criminal Code.

“We are pleased that the Village of Morton Grove took steps to repeal its draconian gun ban,” said Chris W. Cox, NRA’s chief lobbyist. “Finally Village residents can exercise the same constitutionally-protected rights that the rest of the country enjoys.”

Final action by the Village of Morton Grove Board on this ordinance is expected at the July 28 meeting. The NRA is committed to restoring the individual Second Amendment rights to all law-abiding Americans, as recently recognized by the United States Supreme Court in Heller v. District of Columbia.

Cox concluded, “On behalf of the tens of thousands of NRA members and gun owners in Illinois, I’d like to thank all of those who dedicated their time to seeing this illegal gun ban repealed.”

Established in 1871, the National Rifle Association is America’s oldest civil rights and sportsmen's group.  Four million members strong, NRA continues its mission to uphold Second Amendment rights and to advocate enforcement of existing laws against violent offenders to reduce crime.  The Association remains the nation's leader in firearm education and training for law-abiding gun owners, law enforcement and the military.

I still have a t-shirt (from my misspent liberal youth) that has a picture of a handgun with a red circle with a line through it. It says ‘RUN AGAINST THE HANDGUN’. From Morton Grove in the early 70’s. The 2nd Amendment wins another!

My take? They looked at the colossal civil rights lawsuit heading in their direction, realized that damages could conceivably exceed their yearly budget and bailed.

Wasn’t Morton Groove one of the first or perhaps the first of the Chicago suburbs to ban firearms?

I remember the great publicity for our side when Morton Grove passed their ban and Kennesaw Mountain passed its mandatory head-of-household gun ownership law. As expected Morton Grove’s crime rates went up while the Georgia town’s crime rate went down.

Either dismiss the ban outright or wait for the crowd with pitchforks and mean lawyers to show up.

*** Wasn’t Morton Groove one of the first or perhaps the first of the Chicago suburbs to ban firearms? ***

Morton Grove was the first city, town, village to enact a total handgun ban. Chicago and the other suburbs then followed after it withstood a court challenge.

The funny thing (not) is that at first 'Mortgage Grave' passed a law 'only' requiring Gun Safes. That wasn't good enough for the nazis, so then they passed the ban.

(I worked with a guy, and gun collector, back then who lived in M.G. First he bought the gun safe and then had to ship his handguns off to his brothers house in another burb. He wound up keeping his rifles and shotguns in the safe. He passed away about a two years ago. It's too bad, he'd have loved this 180 by M.G.)

Yes. I misspoke. The Run was in the early 80’s. I believed in the ban at the time. Silly me. Then I grew up.

Kennisaw Georgia became famous, at the same time, for passing a law requiring every household to be armed.

Many comparative crime rate studies have been done, care to guess the result?

Phil Donahue, had a Gorbasim over this, attacking the stupid Rednecks in Georgia.

Yep, but the incident I was referring to, was when he had the Mayors of Morton Grove, and Kennisaw, on the show, years ago.

As a response to Morton Grove passing their original ban, Kennesaw, GA symbolically passed a law requiring every home to have a firearm. There were enough exceptions to make it such that someone who didn’t want to have a firearm around, would/could never be prosecuted for not adhering to the law.

For whatever reason(s), Kennesaw, already a low-crime area, saw their crime rate drop even further over the course of the next decade, and perhaps through to today.

I can assure you that Kennesaw is extremely unlikely to drop their requirement, in response to this move by Morton Grove.

Hallelujah! I drive through this town daily as it is just south of the suburb where I live. It’s very much a bedroom community sandwiched in between other suburban communities with shopping and strip mall activity.

The end of Chicago gun-ban laws. Now the good-guys can have weapons too!

The criminals everywhere never had a problem with having guns - they're criminals!
