US to open 3.9m acres in Alaska for drilling
Financial Times ^ | July 16, 2008 | Sheila McNulty

The US federal government on Wednesday said it would open 3.9m acres of land in a designated petroleum reserve in Alaska for drilling as a means to help curb rising petrol prices.

“This is welcome news at a time when Americans are paying record prices at the pump,” said C. Stephen Allred, assistant US Secretary for Land and Minerals. “Together with proposed new production from other offshore and onshore areas, these increased supplies will help to stabilise energy costs.’’

The Alaska decision follows one by President George W. Bush on Monday to lift a presidential ban on drilling on the US outer continental shelf, off Florida. That decision still requires Congress to lift a separate ban on the area before the area can be leased for development.

But the Bureau of Land Management, an agency within the US Department of the Interior, said the Alaskan land that will now be offered requires no other approvals and will be up for leasing in the autumn.

Here is a link with additional information about the BP sideways drilling in Alaska. Don’t see anything about 44 miles sideways.

Is this like the other 68 mil acre that the RATs say we should drill in where we know there is no oil or gas?

Another person said that BP is working on drilling 44 miles sideways.

No way, nothing close to that anywhere in the world.

Up to 6 ERD wells in works for Liberty

Wells from Endicott satellite island for BP’s second Beaufort Sea oil project will break new records for extended reach drilling

Look at this picture by ConocoPhillips talking about the past progretion of horizontal reach.

Gov. 101, The Congress sat on this for 7.5 years. No action from them since they make the laws, not the President. Remember, back then it wasn’t popular (for the Congress), but The President, in every State of the Union address called for more energy independence, more nuclear, more efficient cars, etc.

Secondly, Mr. Clinton started the ANWR ban back in 1993 - no Drilling.

Finally, from 2000 to 2006 the price of gas rose from $1.44 to $2.14. From 2007 to now, with Democratic controlled Congress, price of gas went from $2.14 to over $4. You do the math and who is really preventing the US from using our own resources

No. This is Polar Bear country. Since Pres Polar Bear Bush is responsible for this decision, which cancels the recent polar bear decision, the Polar Bear is henceforth removed from his designation and he shall be known as Pres Bush. Until next time.

Of course with geo-thermal, they want to find the hottest layer they can, and then horizontal bore along it. Best heat transfer.

Thanks for the clarification. Throughout the day I only seem to catch bits and pieces lately.

I think the reason is dollars per gallon.

Yes you are right but that doesn’t make the president right. He needs to lead using the bully pulpit forum which he still owns however flimsy it may be at this point. He has not done that reacting to political pressure to an extraordinary degree instead of what is right for the nation - its main goal - and that is making this country energy independent.

“They should be sued for this very reason, for causing us to suffer, the harm they have caused to our economy, and putting our national security at risk.”

There will be stories this winter of the poor and the elderly either starving or freezing because they cannot pay the heating bills or buy more expensive food.

I also noticed this past winter more stories of housefires due to candles being tipped over after families had their electricity shut off.

The libs care about the poor?
Hardly.

Good to know there are still some things that can be done in this country without Stretch Pelosi’s approval. Fix drill bits and shout “Huzzah!”

Last year, Conoco, Anadarko and Pioneer returned 300,000 acres in the reserve to the federal government, showing the Government the land did not contain enough oil and gas to make up the costs of getting it and transporting it in the remote Arctic environment.

2002 U.S. Geological Survey, 5.9 billion to 13.2 billion barrels for oil and 39 trillion to 83 trillion cubic feet for natural gas.

When congress talks about accessible, they are talking about drill bending tundra ice and soil. It ain’t as easy as it looks or sounds.

“Congress sat on this for 7.5 years.”

The four o’clock news said Congress (dems) just introduced a bill requiring oil companies to do something constructive with the leases they already hold. It was voted down.

Also on the same news the Pope came out with a statement on the energy/food issue, and Gore called for using all domestic sources for [some forms of energy?] in ten years.

I have to sign off, buy maybe someone can find more details and post them.

There are threads on some of these. Maybe also on the 'use it or lose it' Bill.
