The US federal government on Wednesday said it would open 3.9m acres of land in a designated petroleum reserve in Alaska for drilling as a means to help curb rising petrol prices.
This is welcome news at a time when Americans are paying record prices at the pump, said C. Stephen Allred, assistant US Secretary for Land and Minerals. Together with proposed new production from other offshore and onshore areas, these increased supplies will help to stabilise energy costs.
The Alaska decision follows one by President George W. Bush on Monday to lift a presidential ban on drilling on the US outer continental shelf, off Florida. That decision still requires Congress to lift a separate ban on the area before the area can be leased for development.
But the Bureau of Land Management, an agency within the US Department of the Interior, said the Alaskan land that will now be offered requires no other approvals and will be up for leasing in the autumn.

“Is it a DMV requirement to have an Obama Sticker on a Volvo, old or newer models?”
I mentioned this observation to my Trophy Wife over the weekend.
She as usual laughed at me until she started seeing this reality. Yesterday afternoon was our errand day. In the parking lot of our library, we saw 3 Volvos with the Obama Sticker on the rear bumper. She said there are at least two in the parking lot of the building where she works when she pulls into the lot before the offices open.
The Subaru drivers out here usually have some eco sticker from Save the Whales to Keep Tahoe Green with a kayak or two on top of the dirty Subaru.
The liberal owned cars, I love, are the ones with Gore/Lieberman stickers and Kerry/Edwards stickers still on their cars. I asked them where their 3 time loser sticker is, the Obama sticker.
Interesting some have actually said there will not be one.
The caribou are now starring on YouTube: The Truth About ANWR
What else can you expect from these stupid journalists? I have read 4 articles on this subject and not one of them mentions ANWR or puts in geographic and ecologic perspective this decision with respect to all the earlier discussions on opening ANWR.
I have had to spend time doing the geographic research myself to see what this decision means.
However, had this been 9 people killed in Iraq, we would have gotten the exact GPS coordinates, pictures of the wounds and a matematical disertation boiling down to 4550 + 9 = 4559.
So Bush sat on this for 7.5 years. Great.
We’d be in less of a pickle if he’d acted on this 7.5 years ago.
The judge doesn’t have any army divisions.
If you wish to have a dialog with me it will hehove you to get the facts straight. I think a brief review of my reply will reveal that I said “the government” restricted the production of oil. Here again I am having a slight problem in understand the rational. Sorry but I do not accept your “no pain, no gain” approach to life. I go for less government not more.
Out standing news.
I really believe that it was from support garnered from places like this that helped considerably.

Interesting indeed. Tired of licking their wounds, most probably.
“the democrats say that drilling will not result in immediate reductions in gasoline”
And had the Rats not blocked Bush’s energy plans back in his first Term we would be pumping new oil today. This point needs to be driven home every day.
.....but somehow I don’t think this applies to ANWR.
OMG this is not a spoof site article...have to look at source.
Yes! Only the older models with the slotted headrests. Those were designed to accomodate radical Commonist dope smokin Hippies so's their stupid maggot infested ponytail hairdos wouldn't be inconvenienced!!!
Actually we are seeing more Obama stickers on the newer expensive Volvos.
My wife commented yesterday, unlike most older Volvos with more stickers than paint showing, these new Volvos have one Obama sticker and nothing else except maybe a professor’s parking permit for the local community college, UC Davis or one of the Frisco Area Universities.
Well, stune my beeber with a spork weasel.
Miracles do happen...
“offset drilling...can cover a much larger area underground.”
I joked about drilling sideways into ANWR. Someone answered that it was too far away as sideways drilling could only go about 8 miles. Another person said that BP is working on drilling 44 miles sideways. Is this the project your uncle helped develop? If not, how far can his techniques drill, and what company was it for?
“Bears use the pipelines like a highway...”
If it is winter, why aren’t these bears hibernating? Could this picture have been photoshopped?
” Is this the project your uncle helped develop? If not, how far can his techniques drill, and what company was it for?”
Uncle Dan is now 84, and has been retired for a long time. Back before the cheap mideast oil boom, he lived in Midland, Tx. I don’t recall the company. Due to mideast oil, many, many Americans lost their oil-related jobs here. He went on to become a private consultant. He did work for the government on one of the earliest geo-thermal projects, near Yellowstone. That’s where, and when, they really got serious about offset drilling. Must of been about 30 or so years ago. Lots of progress since then!
Please define “stune”, “beeber”, and “spork weasel.” Inquiring minds want to know in case we want to use this colorful phrase ourselves.
A bear that tried to sleep through the entire season of snow on the Alaska North Slope would starve to death trying to hibernate for 9 months or more.
