Romney Makes His VP Case

On Monday night, at a fund-raiser in New Mexico, John McCain said this about his former mortal enemy, Mitt Romney: “I’m appreciative every time I see Mitt on television on my behalf. He does a better job for me than he did for himself as a matter of fact.” This may not have been a joke.

Yesterday, Romney sat down for an interview with CBS News. It is a striking interview, in part because Romney seems to be making the McCain argument better than McCain, or McCain's campaign. There is a clarity to the soundbites that McCain has mostly lacked, a clear line of attack against Obama's experience and McCain's plans. Add to that whatever fundraising burst Romney could provide as a VP candidate, as well as Romney's strength in key swing states like Michigan and Nevada, and it's not hard to see why McCain may end up with a running mate whose hand he didn't shake in the primaries.

EXCEPT: Mitt says in the interview that McCain distinguishes himself from Obama on drilling in the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge. This is wrong, according to the latest McCain statements. Both McCain and Obama oppose drilling in ANWR.

Frankly, watching Romney defend McCain confirms everything I was worried about when I took a pass on voting for him. Fred did it too.

Well folks, just remember Lyndon Johnson. He’s a very good example of a V.P. to think of, when the vice-presidential pick is considered as a reason to support someone or not.

I couldn't agree more. It was the democrats, independents and moderates that nominated John McCain...actually a very small percentage of people, and an even smaller percentage of Republicans, and in fact a small minority of Republicans.

It happens almost every four years that a small number of people pick our nominee. In my humble opinion it's something that must be changed so that all voters have an input. Make the primaries all on the same day and strictly Republican as you suggested.

Yes, he sure can. But, if the intent is to win the general election, why would he? So as to lock up South Carolina? To make sure that Alabama doesn't slip away? Which competitive state does Mark Sanford help McCain win? Is there a group of swing voters that Sanford appeals to more so than McCain?

Thanks for setting me straight, I had thought that many had a personal dislike for the man, or even his creed. Now I now that it is only fealty to conservative ideology that attracts anti-Romney posters to these threads like yellow jackets at a picnic.

If Romney is the veep choice, B Hussein Obama can start planning his coronation right now, because November will just be a formality. A McCain/Romney ticket will result in a defeat of such proportions that 1996 will look like a photo finish.
