He can pick Mark Sanford of South Carolina. Yes, he sure can. But, if the intent is to win the general election, why would he? So as to lock up South Carolina? To make sure that Alabama doesn't slip away? Which competitive state does Mark Sanford help McCain win? Is there a group of swing voters that Sanford appeals to more so than McCain?
No one loathes Romney.
Thanks for setting me straight, I had thought that many had a personal dislike for the man, or even his creed. Now I now that it is only fealty to conservative ideology that attracts anti-Romney posters to these threads like yellow jackets at a picnic.

For the same reason Dubya picked a running mate from Wyoming. It's not about geography, it's about COMPETENCE. A real Conservative and excellent Chief Executive with DC experience like Mark Sanford can't be beat.
"Is there a group of swing voters that Sanford appeals to more so than McCain?"
Yes. The Conservative Republican base, a base for which McCain DOES NOT have locked up.
"Thanks for setting me straight"
Always happy to set those that are misinformed straight. :-)

Leaving aside the obvious near-term flip-flops on primary conservative issues from liberal to conservative, Romney is sure to turn away a large number of conservative voters.
Romney will automatically cause McCain to lose the votes of the Evangelicals who view Mormonism as a cult and view their religion as more important than their politics.
