Romney Makes His VP Case

Posted by Michael Scherer | Comments (41) | Permalink | Trackbacks (0) | Email This

On Monday night, at a fund-raiser in New Mexico, John McCain said this about his former mortal enemy, Mitt Romney: “I’m appreciative every time I see Mitt on television on my behalf. He does a better job for me than he did for himself as a matter of fact.” This may not have been a joke.

Yesterday, Romney sat down for an interview with CBS News. It is a striking interview, in part because Romney seems to be making the McCain argument better than McCain, or McCain's campaign. There is a clarity to the soundbites that McCain has mostly lacked, a clear line of attack against Obama's experience and McCain's plans. Add to that whatever fundraising burst Romney could provide as a VP candidate, as well as Romney's strength in key swing states like Michigan and Nevada, and it's not hard to see why McCain may end up with a running mate whose hand he didn't shake in the primaries.

[See video at link]

EXCEPT: Mitt says in the interview that McCain distinguishes himself from Obama on drilling in the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge. This is wrong, according to the latest McCain statements. Both McCain and Obama oppose drilling in ANWR.

Works for me too! Romney would be a very good choice.

NO *omney. Not now. Not ever.

“...any man who can go on national TV and argue so intensely FOR abortion and even FOR allowing underage girls to get an abortion with or without parental permission as long as she gets a judge’s approval is no conservative, no Republican, no Christian, not even a man at all. Not then. Not now. Not ever. This evil being has no moral bedrock.”

“As soon as Romney falls down on his knees on national TV in front of God and everyone; and repents and begs for forgiveness for all the innocent young lives that were murdered in the womb on his watch after he ran on the pro-abortion platform, then I will consider it. If the man had any integrity at all, he’d resign and spend the rest of his life and the rest of his money trying to undo some of the wrong he’s done. But not as president. That office is reserved for honest men of the highest character and integrity.”

Frankly, watching Romney defend McCain confirms everything I was worried about when I took a pass on voting for him. Fred did it too.

Well folks, just remember Lyndon Johnson. He’s a very good example of a V.P. to think of, when the vice-presidential pick is considered as a reason to support someone or not.

More evidence of Mitt's Veep ascendancy.

The MSM is digging deep to find stuff they'll use against Romney, to warn McCain off:

Did Romney Predict McCain Defeat to Obama?

July 16, 2008 3:49 PM

ABC News' Matt Stuart Reports:  Since dropping out of the presidential race in February, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has made a nearly seamless transition from party rival to prolific supporter of presumptive Republican nominee John McCain.

But will the attacks of a contentious primary season come back to haunt Romney, whose star is rising the Republican veepstakes after aggressive fundraising and surrogate appearances on McCain's behalf? After all, Romney and McCain battled repeatedly through the primary season, most notably leading up to the critical New Hampshire and Florida contests in January of this year....

That covers it for me. I can’t get behind this, but then I’ve made it very clear I don’t care who runs with McCain, I won’t be supporting the ticket.

McCain will be the President. Vice-Presidents would be a lot more useful if they came in twos. It’s harder to use just one for what they are good for, paper weights.

So Romney is too liberal for McCain?.

Is there a more conservative Veep candidate that McCain is contemplating? Fill us in with some news, because your personal and obsessive loathing of Romney is neither news, nor relevant to the GOP Veep pick.

With *omney as a bookend, that has about the integrity of termites holding hands.

No one loathes Romney. What is disgusting has been his lack of judgment.
And Romney's lack of judgment, and his flopflops, ARE relevant to the GOP VP pick, right?

"So Romney is too liberal for McCain?."

Yup. He's too liberal, period.

"Is there a more conservative Veep candidate that McCain is contemplating? Fill us in with some news"

He can pick Mark Sanford of South Carolina. The best Chief Exec in the nation, and a bonafide Conservative.

"because your personal and obsessive loathing of Romney is neither news, nor relevant to the GOP Veep pick."

Now, now, don't throw a little hissy because you can't recognize a liberal RINO flim-flam man when it's hitting you in the face with a Louisville Slugger. :-)

According to the sycophants, we’re not supposed to notice the grotesque lack of integrity or honesty. Some people just refuse to see past the good hair.

I couldn't agree more. It was the democrats, independents and moderates that nominated John McCain...actually a very small percentage of people, and an even smaller percentage of Republicans, and in fact a small minority of Republicans.

It happens almost every four years that a small number of people pick our nominee. In my humble opinion it's something that must be changed so that all voters have an input. Make the primaries all on the same day and strictly Republican as you suggested.

He can pick Mark Sanford of South Carolina.

Yes, he sure can. But, if the intent is to win the general election, why would he? So as to lock up South Carolina? To make sure that Alabama doesn't slip away? Which competitive state does Mark Sanford help McCain win? Is there a group of swing voters that Sanford appeals to more so than McCain?

No one loathes Romney.

Thanks for setting me straight, I had thought that many had a personal dislike for the man, or even his creed. Now I now that it is only fealty to conservative ideology that attracts anti-Romney posters to these threads like yellow jackets at a picnic.

If Romney is the veep choice, B Hussein Obama can start planning his coronation right now, because November will just be a formality. A McCain/Romney ticket will result in a defeat of such proportions that 1996 will look like a photo finish.
