A number of friends of mine have commented on an odd phenomenon that they have observed conservative Republicans they know who are saying that they are going to vote for Barack Obama. It seemed at first to be an isolated fluke, perhaps signifying only that my friends know some strange conservatives. But apparently columnist Robert Novak has encountered the same phenomenon and has coined the term "Obamacons" to describe the conservatives for Senator Obama.
Now the San Francisco Chronicle has run a feature article, titled "Some Influential Conservatives Spurn GOP and Endorse Obama." In it they quote various conservatives on why they are ready to take a chance on Barack Obama, rather than on John McCain.
What is going on?
Partly what is going on is that, in recent years, the Congressional Republicans in general and Senator John McCain in particular have so alienated so many conservatives that some of these conservatives are like a drowning man grasping at a straw.

Real conservative Republicans who believe in hope and change ?
No.
Conservatives for Obama: Proof that the Left doesn’t have a monopoly on stupid.
If he is still alive, I would love Don Cornelius as press secretary.
...gee, I have no idea why...
So its not a conservative thing, its a black thing. Especially since Powell isn’t a conservative.
No conservative is voting for McCain, either.
Why would people be afraid of the opinions of complete strangers (telephone pollsters, exit pollsters)? ....strangers with whom they speak for a second or two, and then will likely never see or hear from again?
As usual, Sowell nails it.
This one is ... and I think he is more likely to listen to reason than the marxist DNC lapdog. Getting through the thick McCain ego veneer is the problem.
If you actually think pollsters don’t collect demographic data on the numbers called and keep it in deep files, well, seen the Quakers on the Moon lately?
Even so, who really would give a rip that “McCain” is next to one’s name in some “deep file” somewhere? Only nutballs and the ultra-guilt ridden.
Fine by me. Or Clarence Thomas for either, except we can't spare him just now.
I could name a dozen blacks, at least, that I would consider voting for. Not one of them has the middle name of Hussein, however.
I have no idea as to the why but I really can’t find a better explanation for the discrepancy. All surveys have an inherent “lie” factor and those conducted face to face tend to be more exagerated. Some people just like to throw a monkey wrench into the system too.
Either you haven’t a clue what goes into pollster’s ‘for future reference’ files or you’re being purposely obtuse.
“No conservative is voting for McCain, either. “
oh, but they are, if they want to keep Obama from the White House, OUR White House
mrs
I’m not a pollster, so I admittedly have no idea what they put into their “for future reference” files. But I do know I don’t give a rat’s ass about telling any pollster, either on the telephone or at the exit polls, that I will vote or have voted against B-HO. ...and anyone who does is a paranoid lunatic.
A message from the past that needs to be repeated over and over again. I'm gonna quote it on some bumper stickers.
