WASHINGTON Politically speaking, Susan Speakman is a different kind of evangelical.
Mrs. Speakman, 59, a pastor and educator at Bethany Presbyterian Church in Bridgeville, Pa., an activist evangelical church southwest of Pittsburgh, backs Senator Barack Obama in the presidential race. Along with her 23-year-old son, Stephen, she supports Mr. Obama because of his stands on the Iraq war and matters of social justice. The two of them plan to spread the word in their community and beyond.
What caught my attention early on was his comment that we dont want red states and blue states, but we want to find reconciliation and rapprochement with folks, said Mrs. Speakman, who changed her party affiliation to Democratic from Republican this year to vote for Mr. Obama in the Pennsylvania primary. I really object to the other approach divide and conquer, isolate and demonize the opposition. I try to engage the other side and try to find ways we can bring the values of the kingdom of God into the experience of humanity.

These phony Christians might just as well eat drink and be merry!

Wow, talk about an easy convert!
Considering the GOP was resurrected, so to speak, in no small measure in the late 70s, early 80s by Jerry Falwell and Co, I’d be very hesitant to toss them overboard.
Shall we tell ‘Bama that this scheme will not work? LOL!

nObama is the Wright way to salvation.
She wants all blue states, the dingbat.
Well, checked out the church and their newsletter for the past few months, and it seems like a nice Christians church. They have a global program, and offer daily activities for everyone.
They seem a lot like Joel Osteen, though. In fact, if you were just reading the literature and asked to guess who wrote it you’d say Joel Osteen.
No self-respecting person of faith could ever support someone like Obama with his anti-Christian values.
She was a pastor at several different churches and then went to Bethany to work in Children's Ministry. So the NY Times article on this has a mistake on the second sentence...Well at least they are getting better.
Wow! That would make a GREAT campaign poster for McCain! Powerful imagery.
And Obama was all over Farakhan’s Million (divided by 10) Man March, like Clinton on a chubby intern.
Not really. Ever heard of a man called Ronald Reagan? He and his ideas about liberty, why govt is the problem not the solution, and the greatness of this country (and NOT that schmuck Falwell) brought the GOP around.
Regardless, the evangelicals, due to their love and lust of govt power and dollars, have alienated almost every segment of what was once a powerful coalition of smaller govt members. Again, let them leave. They won’t and shouldn’t be missed.
And I guess partial-birth abortions are the way to do that.
That’s a pretty bold stand around here. FR believes in a higher power and it isn’t Washington.
Tolerance? Tolerance is not voting against partial birth abortion bans.
