U.S. escalating covert operations against Iran: report Sun Jun 29, 2008 5:53am EDT
NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. congressional leaders agreed late last year to President George W. Bush's funding request for a major escalation of covert operations against Iran aimed at destabilizing its leadership, according to a report in The New Yorker magazine published online on Sunday.
The article by reporter Seymour Hersh, from the magazine's July 7 and 14 issue, centers around a highly classified Presidential Finding signed by Bush which by U.S. law must be made known to Democratic and Republican House and Senate leaders and ranking members of the intelligence committees.
"The Finding was focused on undermining Iran's nuclear ambitions and trying to undermine the government through regime change," the article cited a person familiar with its contents as saying, and involved "working with opposition groups and passing money."

Good leadership knows how to make use of tale-bearers.
Don't need to.
This guy does it for the silver: ". . . article by reporter Seymour Hersh . . ."
Course he's been rewriting this particular story since 2005.
Good, although I wonder why the Left hasn't been screaming for President Bush's head. They went crazy when Nixon conducted similar ops into Cambodia.
So, without a Declaration or Congressional resolution, we are factually at war with Iran.
I vote we use Reuter employees to clear mine fields........
Wait - maybe Bush ordered Jon Carry to cross the border - it could be seared in his mind..........
The democrats are the congressional leaders, right?
Nicely put.
Thanks Seymour. You know, Ahmamurderijad wants to cut your head off too.
and tail-bearers
We have been at war with Iran since November 4, 1979, it's just the that some people do not understand the concept.
we need a herse for Seymour Hersh
The democrats are the congressional leaders, right?
^^^
Which also explains why something described as highly classified would be leaked to an anti-American piece of clinton like Hersch.
Yes we have been at War with Iran since 1979, I attended a briefing on the Iranian Revolution and the take over of the embassy in January of 1980. I was in NY at the time and commented; “yeah, and those two new buildings they’re building in Manhattan are going to be a magnet for them.”
I don’t understand a ‘leadership’ in Congress that would reveal information that could result in the death of U.S. special ops or intelligence personnel.
I further don’t understand the failure of Hersh and the NYT to recognize that publishing this information is not in the best interest of the United States.
What was that device that the Pilgrims, use to put in the town square-(the one where the head was put through one part and the hands and feet were put through other holes), this is what the leakers should be put through and the others that cannot keep their fat traps shut. Lock, them in there and then the town citizens can throw rotten fruits, vegetables and garbage at them. I could suggest caning, like they do in Singapore, but that might be a little too much./Just Asking - seoul62......
These have included seizing members of Al Quds, the commando arm of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, and taking them to Iraq for interrogation, and the pursuit of "high-value targets" in Bush's war on terrorism, who may be captured or killed, according to the article."
Nice. Tip O'hat to President Bush.
Well, it's forty year late, but it's nice that our higher leadership now has the common sense of a blue collar neighborhood. American's enemies want to fight in the shadows, then they can die in the shadows and expect dark treatment.
I was, and am, in favor of Communist, Islamic and the like, both foreign and domestic, being summarily executed. That the US run a hundred or so assination squads, killing not only known enemies, but their families, their bankers. That we collect all speeches and communications, and kill propagandists(wouldn't the cell death, a la Baider Meinhoff Gang, of a scribe of the book 'My Struggle' in the 1920's have saved a lot of grief.)
It was called the stocks.
But an even better device was the dunking seat. It was a seat at the end of a long wooden boom where the malefactor or witch would be chained and then dunked under the water of a pond.
