There were more than 200 student assaults on county public schools teachers last academic year, according to a state report. But school officials said many of the incidents weren't serious assaults and involved elementary schoolers.

Mr. Mennuti said he is worried about the effect assaults have on teacher morale.

"I don't want teachers to be afraid to come to schools," he said. "That's the last thing we need when we're trying to recruit. We can't afford to have something negative like this permeate through the system.

I dunno, would anyone else mind if coming to work meant you might get assaulted? Would it hurt morale?

..it's a little late for that concern, ain't it?

"There were more than 200 student assaults on county public schools teachers last academic year..."

I'm guessing there's a percentage of teachers that like their sex a little rough....

You would have liked to have assaulted your teachers? Well, why didn’t you?

But school officials said many of the incidents weren't serious assaults and involved elementary schoolers.

Well, then, that makes it okay, doesn't it?

When I was in elementary school, it would not have occurred to me to assault any adult, particularly a teacher...

A few of em. Why didn't I? Ah well, I'm sure I had my reasons, but hey, hindsight's 20/20.

Last year we had a teacher at Regan High School in Austin who was attacked by a student thug and he attempted to rape her. Fortunately, the teacher was stronger than the thug and she won the fight and the thug ran off.

She and the rest of Austin found out later that the thug had a record.

With a lot of yelling and recriminations, the legislature made sure that all teachers would know if they had a thug in their class from now on.

This particular thug got more jail time.

In Georgia, we’re supposed to know if one of our students has a record (for certain offenses anyway) and it’s a felony in our state for a student to assault school personnel, from the superintendent to the custodian.

Some of these so called teachers need a good beating the way they act.

They abuse kids in all ways ... and then get paid while on administrative leave.

A beating is more appropriate.

I think it depends on how old they are whether they can or not.

As a retired teacher who was assaulted more than once but not hurt much physically (also had my purse stolen several times), I have to say that it made me mad more than anything—and determined to continue trying to do my job. I do remember teachers who were assaulted just verbally who quit that very day and went on to other careers...depends on your intestinal fortitude, I guess.

Scared my husband though, and eventually I gave up full time teaching because he was tired of the foolishness involved with the field—only about 3% of my time was actual ‘teaching’—the remainder was admin politics, state testing crap, being a policewoman/counselor/judge/creative disciplinarian (since a teacher’s hands are pretty much tied and they are required by law to put up with a student’s BS mostly)—feh.

I always felt I was ‘called’ to be a teacher, but I have to honestly say that I don’t miss it that much. I do miss those few kids who were on track and wanted to learn though.

According to your logic, it's okay to beat up priests and pastors, too, because some are pedophiles.

Who knows? If you beat up enough of them, you might get one who actually deserves it!

Do we not have courts of law that hand out punishments? Have we stepped back into the days of vigilante justice where everyone takes the law into their own hands?

What if someone decides that all republicans and conservatives are foul and deserve a good beating - would it be okay to start stringing us all up?

Your comment is foolish. What you describe is felony assault.

Elementary school students were involved in 139 of them, and 60 were either kindergartners or first- and second-graders ...

Of the 209 assaults, 23 were considered to be grounds for expulsion or a lengthy suspension and were likely the most serious incidents.

I don't think 6 year olds throwing tantrums is worth the term 'assault'. It sounds to me like there were around 25 real assaults, 30 or 40 to be generous if we assume some of the brats got away with it.

Which is too many of course, but hardly the epidemic the headline describes.

Luckily for you, we had laws to prevent such bad judgment calls back then. Teenagers have not yet developed good judgment. Until PARENTS will reclaim this job, I guess we'll have to rely upon laws and rules to help them TO develop it.
