Rush to drill for oil shale unwise
denverpost.com ^ | June 16, 2008 | Denver Post Editorial

----snip----

We believe commercial oil shale production in this region will come, and probably within 10 years. That's why it's so important to address the concerns The Post voiced 28 years ago about the impact of oil shale production on the environment and economy of the West, especially on our scarce water supplies.

"In-situ," or in-the-ground, technology being developed by Shell and EGL Resources, along with a new approach by Chevron crafted by teaming with Los Alamos National Laboratories, may be able to solve those problems. But the companies doing that research say they aren't yet ready for commercial development.

We commend these far-sighted and responsible energy companies for working with Western leaders like Salazar, Gov. Bill Ritter and Wyoming Gov. Dave Freudenthal to ensure that these vast reserves are developed wisely.

They pour cold water on Rocky Mountain scale development then finish up by implying that it will come anyway as soon as Chevron and Shell say they're ready.

If I was to characterize this article I'd say it says: "shale? ...yes it's going to happen...but be careful...steady as she goes". Sounds like a bunch of anti-capitalist, pansy assed liberals soaked in liberal nuance to me.

I think that if Rush wants to drill for oil, he should be allowed to do so.

Even if it were an issue, we have plenty of crude not in shale that can be drilled and extracted. Another liberal hype article.

Demands for environmentally sensitive development are not unreasonable. I lived in Northern Maine where the lumber clear cutting in the 70's and the 80 was appalling; a rape of the land in the worst sense of the word. I also have been part of a response against the strip mining and clear cutting in Montana.

We can get these resources; we ned to get these resources, but the companies have the ability now to use a little technological innovation and environmentally sound policies to obtain them.

it's in the companies own best interest to maintain the land and keep a small environmental footprint.

Any brain-dead political hack can see the wisdom of the first four options. Only someone with a few neurons still firing can question them.

The leftists dream of returning to the glorious days of FDR’s great depression so they can install many more government programs and controls on freedom. They intend to do it by cutting off our sources of energy. That is what is behind the “Global Warming” nonsense.

In Fort Worth Texas they are about to begin extracting oil and gas from a huge shale deposit that sits in the middle of several residential neighborhoods.

There are a few environmentalist cranks moaning about it but for the most part the people love it because they will soon be receiving the checks for their oil and gas leases.

The Denver Post has been fighting shale oil development for nearly 30 years... And now when it looks like shale oil production might become a reality its a ‘rush’.

Idiots.

Of course it must be environmentally friendly and economical .... Duh.

I found the article kinda strange. It seemed to imply that there were crazed drillers who wanted to drill even if it was uneconomical and violated our environmental laws.

30 + years ago, Exxon’s approach to getting oil out of shale was to drill and blast, crush the shale down to golf balls and then hit the chunks with radiation to make the oil come out. In this process, the golf balls because bigger than soft balls, (about 40 percent bigger.) Add this impact to the normal 25 percent swell factor and you begin to see the problem.

The Saudis opening up the taps slightly is not enough to crush the entire concept of offshore or ANWR drilling, as it is with oil shale.
