Demands for environmentally sensitive development are not unreasonable. I lived in Northern Maine where the lumber clear cutting in the 70's and the 80 was appalling; a rape of the land in the worst sense of the word. I also have been part of a response against the strip mining and clear cutting in Montana.
We can get these resources; we ned to get these resources, but the companies have the ability now to use a little technological innovation and environmentally sound policies to obtain them.
it's in the companies own best interest to maintain the land and keep a small environmental footprint.

I found the article kinda strange. It seemed to imply that there were crazed drillers who wanted to drill even if it was uneconomical and violated our environmental laws.

My understanding was that lumber companies planted trees to replace those they cut down. Lumber is a fully renewable resource which I believe(ed) was being in fact replaced. Are you saying this wasn't being done in Maine?
