The roots of the anti-electric can opener go back to about 1970. A Japanese economist was shocked the Americans were using electric energy to open tin cans, and predicted an American energy crisis.

And just out of curiosity, what the heck is an "energy saving toaster"? Automatic shut-offs have been around since at least the 1950s.
