Hard to believe losing an election is a good thing, but, then again, many Freepers do.

Many McCain bashers believe McCain's defeat would result in a second coming of a Reagan clone.

Limbaugh, for instance, believes it would be a mistake for McCain to win because the RINOs would take over the party.

Rothenberg, then, has company, but the question is how much company. Senator McCain did win the nomination.

I agree 100%. A McCain win will cement RINO’s into Republican core power. It’ll prove that being a moderate reaching out the the left is the way the New Republicans win.

I listen to Rush every single day, and Rush has never ever said what you allege. He isn’t happy with McCain, but has said he prefers him to win.

Personally, I won’t be voting for McLame, and will just let the chips fall where they may.

I believe in fighting one election at a time. This time we need to keep Obama out of the White House. Let’s worry about 2010 once the 2008 election is over.

I concur.

I ask: Where is the next RR? He/she doen’t exist as of now. RR was well-known and visible in 1980. There’s no one like that now in the party.

At this point I’m more worried about the fate of our COUNTRY vs. the state of the GOP or the Democrat party. It’s for that reason alone that I will be casting my vote for McCain. Obama is a marxist through and through. At least McCain has respect for our country... An Obama victory in November I’m afraid would have very far-reaching consequences - ones that our country may not EVER be able to recover from...

I'm not so sure Rothenberg or Rush are wrong. Everytime I think I can hold my nose and support McCain because Osama Obama is so very, very bad, McCain does something else stupid to remind me of just how much he hates conservatives-- kissing th ring of La Raza, rolling out another economic voodoo proposal which bows to the global warming cult, or denouncing a talk show host for using BHO's middle name.

I'm beginning to think McCain really doesn't want to be president; he just wanted to make sure nobody to his right would have a chance at being elected. If he picks his idealogical clone, the Judas Goat Hucksterbee as VP, then I'll know for sure.

Doesn’t the latest Supreme Court decision show you the importance of winning elections? Do you really want the awful results of Obama as president with large congressional majorities for his party? It will be an absolute nightmare. And don’t be so sure that once entrenched, the Dems would be so easy to defeat later on. Losing to win is a naive idea.

We paid a small price domestically from the Carter-to-Reagan transition. Because Carter did not get a single SCOTUS nomination. We won’t be so lucky with Obama. He will get at least two.

Ain’t no way in hell will I sit back and allow Obama to even think he can pick our next 3-4 Supreme Court Justices.

Limbaugh is emphatically for a Democrat loss in the election. You must be listening to a different Limbaugh that I listen to. He makes no bones about the fact that he does not like the idea of McCain as president and hopes McCain will try a bit harder to be a more conservative. but he has never, ever said he wants McCain to loose.

Stuart Rothenberg?

Another DC pundit who has overstayed his welcome, retire please, move over and give someone else a chance.

Your opinions about Republicans/Conservatives means jack sh*t to me.

I don’t think between the two of them, McCain or Obama that we have a Presidential contender we can trust either at all, or completely for the integrity of America. It is for that reason I believe we must concentrate all efforts to regain Congress, even if in so doing we fail, yet the results become a sufficient quantity of Conservative members to thwart the Socialist/Democrat lunacy.

Of course my vote would have to be for McCain simply to make what Conservatives we have in Congress’ job representing our interests somewhat less harrowing.

IOW I could get SOME sleep at night the next four years with McCain in the WH rather than Obama.

...I don't necessarily agree with Stewart that a McCain victory in November would lead to the "eradication" of the GOP,

Ironically, just 4 years ago, the pundits were predicting the end of the Dem party, should Kerry lose.

Yet, 2 years ago, the Dems managed to re-take both the Senate and House, because the GOP has squandered their leadership.

The GOP won't be that lucky, unless a President Obama screws up so badly that he overturns the House 2 years into his term. Clinton, as bad as his first term was, still got re-elected. So, probably would Obama.

It will take the GOP years, possibly decades, to recover from the onslaught of 06 and impending political slaughter of 08.

Stuart Rothenberg's analysis is reasonable and rational and not biased by any animus towards John McCain.

The Republican Party has a serious identity problem.

McCain's message is completely muddled and confused. There is no coherent governing philosophy or principal to be discerned in it.

I will vote for McCain, but it is almost impossible to "follow" McCain.

There is always ebb and flow. There are times the nation’s mood will be more liberal than conservative. That’s not to say they become big liberals. It means that it’s a floating standard.

“Republicans and (conservatives?) are rallying behind Sen. John McCain’s White House bid”

Someone is smoking crack. I see some conservatives saying “I’m not voting for McCain, I’m voting against Obama” but I don’t see anyone actually “happy” or “rallying behind” (although behind him is the safest place to be) Juanito.

McCain is not the different then Obama. I almost think there is only one party ruling...masking as two to keep the people divided. We all know what happens when a person gets in the White House. It's business as usual... The election is set so that Obama wins. Any half way decent Republican other than McCain. For instance, Romney would have easily wiped Obama’s racist butt.

The way it works is 8 years Democrats, 8 years Republicans, now its time for 8 years Democrats. This is how Obama can say with certainty he will be in office 8 years.

“Many McCain bashers believe McCain’s defeat would result in a second coming of a Reagan clone.”

I don’t believe that, I just don’t believe that given the mans’ recent past that he deserves to be rewarded with the Presidency.

“Rothenberg, then, has company, but the question is how much company. Senator McCain did win the nomination.”

Do you think that the same leftists that voted for him in the early states will stick around after they got what they wanted?

I thought we settled this question in 1992. If eight years of the Clintons plus their enduring legacy in the executive departements, the CIA, the FBI, and the judiciary isn't enough to convince conservatives that an Obama presidency would be a very BAD thing, then nothing is.

Conservatives who hope for an Obama victory truly belong in the Stupid Party.

I could see a case where voting for a moderate democrat over an outright RINO might be a reasonable idea, but Obama is not even close to moderate.

Wake up, people! Are you going to stand by while a bunch of America-hating, racist radicals take over the White House?
