Jim Geraghty takes a look at longstanding blog buzz over Barack Obama’s birth certificate, which the campaign refused to release to the St. Petersburg Times in April:

We tried to obtain a copy of Obama’s birth certificate, but his campaign would not release it and the state of Hawaii does not make such records public.

Has anyone seen it? Why shouldn’t the record be in the public domain for presidential candidates?

Geraghty walks through various rumors now circulating in the wake of the Obama campaign’s birth certificate blackout, including this one:

Rumor Three: His mother did not want to name him after his father, and his birth certificate says “Barry.” Perhaps the most plausible of the rumors, as Obama was known by that name through much of his childhood and young adulthood. If true, this would spur a new round of “When Barry Became Barack” stories – a minor headache for the campaign, but hardly a major scandal.

Lest the Obama campaign start whining about this issue being an unfair “distraction,” John McCain underwent intense scrutiny of his citizenship status because of his birth in the Panama Canal zone, leading the Senate to declare him a natural-born citizen in April.

By profession, I'm a cook and wireless engineer. My preferred method of ending an incident is to pin the other barstids primary hand and slash at the throat.

I've not had luck with firearms in personal confrontations in the 7-8 times that I've used them.

If he was born in a foreign country then some conservative working at Kapiolani Med Center would have made news by claiming there are no records of his birth. It would be totally legal to do so since their is no law against releasing information that doesn't exist, however, if he was born in Hawai'i then Kapiolani Med would not release the documents due to priviledge... indicating he was actually born on U.S. soil. End of story.

Do you have a source for Senator Obama being born at Kapiolani Medical Center?

The reason that I ask is that I saw on this web page the assertion that he was born at Queen's Medical Center:

First Generation:

1. Barack Hussein OBAMA was born on 4 August 1961 at the Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Barack Hussein OBAMA, Sr. of Nyangoma-Kogelo, Siaya District, Kenya, and Ann DUNHAM of Wichita, Kansas. His parents met while both were attending the East-West Center of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where his father was enrolled as a foreign student. When Barack Obama was two years old, his parents divorced and his father moved to Connecticut to continue his education before returning to Kenya.

Another FReeper said today that he called the relevant office in 2004, and was told they don’t bother to check these things.That was me. I called again today and verified that in the State of Washington the Sec. of State does not validate the eligibility of candidates for POTUS. So in Washington (State) it is the honor system I guess.

There are citizenship requirements to be President of the United States.

The public has every right to know without reservation that he is legally qualified.

Actually- you have missed one of the points. The law at the time had specific qualifications for the one “US Citizen” parent involved. Obama’s mother did not meet the requirements for her child to be an automatic citizen (assuming he was NOT born in the US or a territory).

I love my kukri. I've never had to defend myself with it though. I have only come close to defending myself with a gun as well. But several times I have been darned glad to have it and there would probably have been a confrontation, to my detriment, if I had not.

is there such a thing as an “ex post facto” birth certificate, issued AFTER a birth, in any circumstances?

Yes there are but it is now quite rare ,, my father was born at home in NYC in the 1920’s ,, his mother had to swear to his birthdate at city hall years later to get him admitted to school as there was no doctor or midwife present to file at the time of birth and it all was forgotten until needed.

There are books with sample birth certificates from all cities, counties, states etc. ,, but the books are never really complete. What we’re talking about isn’t a uniform document which is why they are so very easy to counterfeit ,,, how many people really know what a 1971 certificate from some long closed hospital in Oklahoma really looks like. There have been many instances of city halls burning with records destroyed ,, you can never verify anyone from those towns... Here’s an idea ,, pick a town that was demolished for a dam resovoir...

I got it from an article in the Honolulu Star, but there are lots of other places:  http://starbulletin.com/2008/02/18/news/story03.html "He was born in Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children, two blocks up from where our grandmother still resides ... the place where he used to stick orange peels under his bed, where it got all dried out and ... nasty."

Another source is his books. He mother was living with his grandmother at the time of his birth.  She is still alive and a good enough witness to when and where he was born to satisfy any court in the country.  The courthouse that held my father's birth certificate burned, all it took was a relative to re-establish his records.

Too many people are over thinking this story.  Which really isn't a story.  I just Googled "obama citizenship" in "Google News" and only find two stories on this that aren't in blogs/forums etc.

The more I think about it, this is probably a great ruse put out by the DNC or Obama's campaign to keep all the bloggers running in circles with visions of Dan Rather dancing in their heads.
