Discovery launches first "ecotainment" channel (Planet Green)

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Could "green" become a new watchword in TV programming?

While the media companies have long been touting everything they're doing behind the scenes to become more environment-friendly, the message increasingly is seeping into their programming.

On Wednesday, Discovery Communications launches the first 24/7 eco-friendly network, Planet Green, which will take over the space occupied by Discovery Home Channel. That follows NBC Universal's second companywide "Green Week" in April -- featuring 100 hours of green-themed content airing across 42 NBC Universal brands and 28 Web sites -- with two more already planned for November and April.

Planet Green will launch with more than 250 hours of original programming, featuring a range of name talent in front of and behind the camera, including Leonardo DiCaprio, celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse, rocker Tommy Lee and rapper Ludacris. It officially kicks off at 6 p.m. with the entertainment newsmagazine "Hollywood Green With Maria Menounos," followed by the Tom Bergeron-hosted "Supper Club."

Planet Green president and GM Eileen O'Neill said it's the perfect time to launch an eco-friendly channel.

"Now is a critical time in our planet's health," she said. "There is a rally cry out there, and now we're really going to bring it into viewers' own homes to be the inspiration for them to make changes around their household and lifestyle."

From what I can tell, NONE of the old shows from Discovery Home will be on Planet Green.

Moonbats don’t like the competition.

The true believers are only the gullible public, the sheep. For the ones behind it, it’s just another tool in their arsenal. They don’t really believe it themselves, or if they do, they don’t really care. For some, it’s a means to more money and power. For others, it’s a political tool to use in the socialist (really, dictatorial) globalist take-over.

This is the reason we need “a la carte” options on DISH, DirecTV and cable.

No sense in paying for crap we don’t want.

It looks like Planet Green is going to be available in HD soon.

I think a lot of the people involved in Planet Green are true believers AND deceivers.

The article talks a lot about “The Message.”

It’s their self-fabricated “gospel.”

I booted that one off my DirecTV as soon as I saw it. Best thing to do with these “alternative entertainment” channels, and it does send a message to the carriers...

That would be awesome and I have suggested that to DirectTV.
I doubt they will though because if the charged say 30 cents per channel, maybe $1.00 for premium, people like me would end up spending $3.00 per month, LOL. I hate having to get trash like Sundance to get the Outdoor Channel, etc.

When will digital tv permit the home viewer to ONLY PAY for the channels (s)he wants to watch and financially support?

Even if you block a channel you still pay for it.

Last night was "Planet Green" night at the Nationals-Cardinals game here in DC.

"Green" is just the latest marketing strategy and folks are eating it up.

The Carbon Credits scam has been taken.

How about hemp rope bracelets so they can show they “care”?

They would even be biodegradable unlike the rubber plastic braclets.

Is there a way to permanently delete the channel or block it? And does DirectTV know that you have through its phone connection? I haven't delved into it, since I spend most of my days and waking moments at night outside and may watch 2 hours of TV per week (except during College Football).

I was thinking of putting together and marketing a Global Warming Survival Kit. We could throw that in with the set as a “First 50 callers” bonus.

The industry doesn’t want you to opt out and they lobby the legislature to block any efforts to permit it.

Ultimately Big Media doesn’t like you tuning out.

They offer free subscriptions to their magazines at Best Buy with any purchase, they co-opt the “open marketplace” of music on Myspace (even independent local bands would see a percentage of their online sales going to the major corporations).

They want the public on the plantation getting the infotainment that they want you to consume.
