NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Barack Obama's campaign says the candidate made a mistake when he said a great uncle helped liberate the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz during World War II.
Obama said Monday that his uncle was among the first U.S. troops at Auschwitz. But Auschwitz was liberated by Soviet forces.
The campaign said Tuesday that he named the wrong camp. They said it was actually Buchenwald.
Aides said his grandmother's brother, Charlie Payne, helped liberate a Buchenwald sub-camp in April 1945 as part of the 89th Infantry Division.
Critics had been questioning Obama's original comment mentioning Auschwitz

OK...in five minutes of digging on google, it appears that the if Obama is correct now, the camp in question should be the Ohrdruf subcamp of Buchenwald. The president of the 89th infantry gave the following report below...My reading is unless Obama’s GREAT UNCLE was part of the recon group, he did not liberate the camp. The 89th infantry was only there for a short time, hours actually, and then turned it over to the 335th infantry. Military folks will be able to dig deeper than me, but just like in Obama’s books, much of what he says just seems to be made up. Of course, his message is what is important, not truth.

The story now shifts to the 89th Recon Troop, a platoon leader of which sent me the following account. “My 2nd Platoon was reconnoitering ahead of the infantry regiment (355th) on that day and we came upon this complex and two German soldiers who were guarding the front gates. We shot and killed one, and the other ran off. Setting up a modest defense, we entered the compound and saw first hand the horror of life in a Nazi concentration camp. We radioed our troop headquarters for instructions and were told to remain there, keeping the inmates contained (this was hardly necessary, as most were in their bunks, hardly able to walk) while HQ contacted the infantry to relieve us. In less than three hours, the infantry (3rd Battalion, 355th Inf) arrived and we were sent on a new mission”. Lastly, another member of our society who was in the 3rd Battalion of the 354th Infantry, advised me that shortly after the 355th Infantry took over the camp, the 3rd Battalion of the 354th replaced the 355th, also for only a short time. During these days, the 355th Infantry in its entirety had apparently been attached to the 4th Armored Division. All of this helps explain why both the 89th Division and the 4th Armored Division have been credited with liberation the Ohrdruf Concentration Camp.

This is a non-story.
They killed a lot of people just before the troops came, the Germans. There were still half-dead bodies. There were still bodies lying there, that must have been dead maybe seven, eight hours, and they tried to bury them just before. I recall that they were all shot. They were trying to bury them just before. And then after this I left, and they had the high brass come, the Division Commanders came and they looked at it and took pictures. I had a couple of packs of cigarettes, and I gave the survivors a couple of packs of cigarettes. Now, one American guy was telling me that they came rushing to them with such joy, and I remember when I came in, I spoke German. I remember driving up and the Germans had the white flags out, a long street, it was almost a straight street and the camp gates were open. In the town of Ohrdruf we asked where the concentration camp was. Of course, nobody knew, but very ironically the flags were lined up in two rows there. They took Ohrdruf in the morning and I was there in the afternoon, I would say maybe only four hours later. The actual troops from the 89th were still there. The 4th Armored troops moved a little faster. But the same day or the day after they had all the big “mavens” coming in. because this was a big thing. I staved there three, four hours; it wasn’t too long. I remember seeing these live bodies. Not alive; I mean, you see a picture and you see its a little different. They were the living dead, the people who were liberated, there was nothing to them. Its exactly or worse than the pictures because when you touch them its like you touch bones.
I also had a bitter disappointment in those days. I would look for my family. I won’t talk about third or fourth cousins. I’m talking about uncles, grandfathers and first cousins and second cousins. And every place I went I would find they were killed in Buchenwald, they were killed in Marienbad, or whatever the name was. And remember these things, I would write home to my mother. “I understand this one got killed there.” I can’t think back to those days; they were horrible days. In my letters borne there was this hatred. Until today when I pulled out these letters I had always thought of the army as a great place. but looking at these letters, realizing this hate I had, I said to myself. “Gee, this is not me.”

The date was April 4, 1945 and I was on a patrol as a member of the I & R platoon attached to the Headquarters Company of 354th Infantry Regiment, of the 89th Infantry Divisions, 3rd Army U.S.A.
I am not a military person so I may be mistaken on the only 89th infantry being the recon folks. The 354th was part of the 89th. Still does not prove or disprove whether Ogaffa was amking this up. Only way to tell for sure is to look into Charlie payne’s records.
No, I think the story is that Obama does not know or care enough to get such vital details right. Auschwitz, Treblinka, Buchenwald, who knows, a concentration camp is a concentration camp (in Obama’s mind). To people who do know and care about what happened in the 1940s, it is not a trivial matter to mess around with the history so carelessly to score political points.
Well it now appears it may simply be Obama who doesn’t know enough or doesn’t care to be able to relate the story accurately (he botched it in both 2002 and 2008, that we know about). I wonder if he even knows or cares about the great-uncle “typical white person” whose personal history is used for campaigning purposes.
CNN story refers to statement from Obama camp that says it was a great-uncle serving in the 89th Infantry Division, liberating one of the sub-camps at Buchenwald. That does seem to be borne out in the division history, IF the Obama campaign is now accurate about the great-uncle and IF said great-uncle was actually there:

The real question should be
“HOW COULD OBAMA BE SO CARELESS AND INACCURATE ABOUT EVENTS OF SUCH ENORMOUS MORAL AND HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE?”
He has botched this story in both 2002 and 2008, that we know about. At the very least it is fair to say he knows nothing about the history of the liberation of Europe in 1945.
I wonder if he would fall for the joke about the plane crash on the Mexican border, about which side of the border to bury the survivors.

Here's a guy who researched his life to write his bio and he's made a public mistake on his only relative to serve in WWII who "as the legend goes" spent 6 months in an attic. Uh huh...
I'll bet it was a 1 1/2 story house...the typical war time houses...A lot of people slept in the upper level...and a lot of families were crowded with live in relatives back then.
By the way...One of my best buddies lives in his attic (2 1/2 stories) half the time...Why??...It's quiet.

His invoking Auschwitz is simply an example of his abysmal lack of education despite his Ivy League credentials. It also demonstrates the ignorance of his staffers or their comtempt for the people(maybe both) since this claim about Auschwitz was made on a 2002 poster, only that reference also added Treblinka to the list of camps liberated by the haloed one's uncle.
