SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) The U.S. Navy has denied Chelsea Clinton permission to campaign for her mother on a former bombing range on a small Puerto Rican island.
Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign wanted to use the land Wednesday as a setting to discuss the candidate's clean up plan for the region and call to give some areas to local residents.
But Navy spokeswoman Lt. Lara Bollinger said no one is allowed to campaign on federal property.
Chelsea Clinton is making her second campaign visit to Puerto Rico in the last three weeks. The U.S. territory has 55 delegates at stake in its June 1 Democratic primary.
The Navy closed the range in Vieques in April 2003 following years of protests after two errant bombs killed a security guard.
Somebody farted...woah oh oh oh...
Some of those most excited people I have ever seen. I sure hope none of them have heart conditions, they seem to be overstimulated.
Excellent.
Poor Chelsea - turned away from the Killing Fields of
Vieques. No chance to see and weep over the stacks of thousands and thousands of dummy bombs stacked so high...
She got a tattoo on her forehead which read, "THIS SIDE UP".
And what the hey, let her campaign from out in the middle of the minefield - but only if her mom walks out there for a joint photo-op, hand-in-hand.
Yes, don’t you remember they all howled when they found out closing the base meant all the jobs they had on would be gone as well?
“The U.S. Navy has denied Chelsea Clinton permission to campaign for her mother on a former bombing range on a small Puerto Rican island”.
...She can come back when it becomes a CURRENT bombing range.
The guards at her bank turn off the security camera when they see her coming.
Right.
The closing down of Vieques meant closing down Roosevelt Roads Naval Base as well because, after all, Rosie Roads was there to complement the Vieques firing range and vice versa. Once one of those components was gone, the other one had to go to. That part of the Island (Northeast) is suffering those closures bigtime...
Yeah, the expression on the face of the little girl in the center holding the sign reminds me of the Beatles' appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show.
Her parents hung a pork chop around her neck to get the family dog to come near her.
Vieques was the best (only?) target range of its kind for naval gunfire. I shot at Vieques (killing no guards) during gunnery exercises in 1981. I was Director Officer for the 5”/54. Among other things my job was to pass visual corrections down to Gun Plot after observing the shell impact.
It took two bombs to kill one guy?
That makes no sense.
I was waiting for a comment about Garcia. I did 6 months there in ‘69. also did some pineapple wine in Isabella...
I know a lot of Navy and Marine vets who remember Vieques fondly. Having grown up in Puetro Rico, I remember going to Vieques several times, specifically camping out at the beach with my friends at Playa Esperanza and taking the ferry from Fajardo.... lots of booze and fun times....
Vieques was/is awesome....
Ah, the memories of youth....
They should’ve let her.
But let her know that bombing runs are still going on.
