In a major blow to national Republicans, a Mississippi congressional seat that once voted for President Bush by a twenty-five point margin elected a Democrat on Tuesday. Prentiss County Chancery Clerk Travis Childers beat out Republican candidate Greg Davis, the mayor of Southaven, by a 54%-46% margin, a spread that several Republican strategists on Capitol Hill characterized as a startling wake-up call for a party in dire straits.
Voters cast ballots for the fourth time in three months for the seat, vacated when Republican Roger Wicker was appointed to fill the remainder of Senator Trent Lott's term. After winning the primary and the runoff election, Childers came within 410 votes of winning the first round of the special election against Davis on April 22, beating the Republican by a 49%-46% margin.

Let the revolution begin.
Dang RINOs.
Davis wasn’t a RINO. Childers did run as a conservative. Hopefully with Obama on the ticket in November this might get pulled back on our side, but who knows.
If you think mayor Davis is a rino, I have a bridge to sell you in Brooklyn. Davis is about as conservative as you can get, I know him personally. He would have been a great addition to the House.
To blame “rinos” on this loss is totally absurd. The country is pissed at Republicans for a multitude of reasons, some relating to rino politics (spending, immigration) some not (Iraq). The economy is also a big factor.
Wake up. The MS loss had nothing to do with RINO politics. It had everything to do with Mississippians wanting a generic “change” of brands.
Uh oh.
I think there have been three GOP losses in special elections just recently to democrats....... This one in MS, the one in LA around Baton Rouge which Woody Jenkins lost and one other I can’t remember. Not good news for the GOP even at the local levels it seems.
Boener and Blunt have to go in the House. They shoul have never been elected to their slots after the 2006 train wreck.
BTW, who in the heck is the Chair of the RNC???? Still can’t get an answer to that one.
Republicans congress people have no one to blame but themselves, they need to show their conservative values, and more people would support them.. look at the vote on drilling for gas yesterday in the senate.. I think 7 Rinos voted against it...when every one in their states are feeling the pinch when they gas up..
Republicans had better unite behind a clearly stated conservative agenda or face bitter defeat in ‘08. The GOP needs to start standing for getting spending under control and tax cuts or it will lose it’s butt.
I live in Southaven. Davis is a good mayor.
“The leadership aide suggested that a former NRCc chairman, Virginia Rep. Tom Davis, could take on a larger role in the coming months.”
Yeah, THAT’LL help!
What a bunch of DUMBA—ES.
Yes, Childers did run as a conservative, but this is more focusing on the very serious problems with the GOP at the national level. The GOP has foolishly allowed their brand name to be compromised by RINOs and the self serving types.
The RNC coffers are thread bare. There is a grassroots revolt and it is showing up in the form of the lack of donations to the RNC. Just wait until October when there are no ground troops for door-to-door type activity for McCain or few others down the ticket.
The GOP is broken and as long as they continue the present course there will be a train wreck, and maybe that’s not such a bad thing.
That's why McCain still has some chance to win the Presidency, because he has been so effective in distancing himself from the tainted GOP brand.
For the rest of the party, a wholesale purge is coming.
The other loss was for Speaker Dennis Hastert’s seat which had been Republican for about 100 years. This is serious.
I don’t understand why people are mad at the economy. Unemployment isn’t high, taxes are down, and the stock market is holding it’s own - the only big problem I see is the price of gas and who do we have to blame for that? The Democrats.
Or they could focus on the threat of Global Warming. Maybe that will help.
This is not good. Hopefully Davis sticks around for the rebound.
Among other things, Childress had better sounding negative ads and ran a ton more of them - including during Rush Limbaugh’s show. The DNCC, I should say, they ran the ads so that Childress could claim to be above the fray.
