IDF arrests terrorist trained in Iran

It has been released for publication that Aala Abu-Madif, an operative in the Abu-Rish faction and a former Fatah member, was arrested in a joint Shin Bet-IDF operation which took place a month ago.
The IDF claimed that Abu-Madif, a resident of the Gaza Strip town of Khan Younis, received advanced military training in Iran and was recently involved in the firing of rockets towards Israel. In addition, he expressed a willingness to serve as a suicide bomber. (Efrat Weiss)

MONTREAL–The frantic search for a missing aide to a Quebec cabinet minister ended horrifically yesterday when her body was found in the basement of an abandoned home.
Hours later, residents of the quiet hamlet of Rivière-Ouelle were again jolted when a local man was arrested in connection with the killing. Sources say the man had helped in the search for the missing woman, Le Soleil reports.
Police discovered the body of 37-year-old Nancy Michaud, who served as a political adviser to Quebec Natural Resources Minister Claude Béchard, in the abandoned house only a few kilometres from her own home in the rural town, about 150 kilometres northeast of Quebec City.
Shortly after the body was found at around 3:30 p.m. yesterday, a Quebec provincial police spokesperson said officers had arrested a 30-year-old man from the town of 1,200.
“He was originally interviewed as a person of interest and a potential witness, and following the discovery of the body he was formally arrested,” said Const. Claude Ross. “We're still at the interrogation stage, he's currently being questioned and if all goes as expected, there will be an arraignment.”
Ross said the man is known to police, and would not speculate on the nature of the charges he could face.
Ross told The Canadian Press that police believe there is only one suspect.
The man is reportedly the grandson of the owners of the disused house where Michaud’s body was discovered, and is known to have had drug problems in the past.
Police also said that in addition to evidence recovered along with the body, information provided by townsfolk was instrumental in making a quick arrest.
Riviére-Ouelle Mayor Roger Richard said the town is badly shaken.
“At least now we have a denouement of sorts. We've found her, and they've arrested somebody, but this is just a terrible shock,” he told the Star when reached by phone.
He said Michaud grew up in the tight-knit community and is a long-time volunteer whose murder will leave a large hole.
“We never would have believed something like this could happen in our town,” Richard said. “It's doubly difficult because everyone is close to everyone else. Both the person who has been arrested and Nancy's family are from here, the families know each other.”
The crucial break in the case may well have been provided by one of Michaud’s neighbours, who happened to see tire tracks in the lawn outside the house where her body was discovered.
François Lévesque was walking near the house, which locals say may have been abandoned for as much as 20 years, with his friend Jean-Christophe Caron when they saw something unusual.
“There were tire tracks all the way around, and they came right up to the front porch, as though someone had wanted to unload something heavy,” Caron told the TVA network.
The two alerted police, who had been searching a nearby grove, and moments later investigators made the grisly discovery.
“I'm glad we were able to find her, but this really is a huge tragedy,” said Lévesque, who lived across the street from Michaud.
“She's someone I knew well, I know her husband and the children, too. It's very sad, especially for the kids. They're good people.”
Michaud vanished late Thursday evening or early Friday – her husband returned from work shortly after 2 a.m. to find the couple's two children, an 18-month-old and a 6-year-old, asleep in bed with their mother nowhere to be found.
Police determined that she had been beaten, taken from her house, and dragged to a waiting vehicle.
Shortly after she disappeared, a man wearing a balaclava was taped by surveillance cameras at the local credit union making two cash withdrawals using her bank card.
Premier Jean Charest released a statement last night, calling the death inexplicable and offering his condolences to the town, which is part of Béchard’s riding of Kamouraska-Témiscouata.
Police have said her job advising Béchard was not related to her disappearance.
Last night Béchard, who had earlier visited with the family, described Michaud as “a mother, a friend and an extremely devoted employee.”

“The Quranic Concept of War,” by Pakistani Brig. Gen. S.K. Malik in the late 1970s, isn’t much studied in the West.
But it should be, Myers said, if America, and more specifically, the U.S. military, wants to gain a better understanding of the enemy in the war on terrorism.
Malik attempts to teach his readers about the doctrinal aspects of “Quranic warfare,” said Myers, who wrote a paper on the subject published in Parameters, the Army War College quarterly, and delivered a presentation at the Association for the Study of the Middle East and Africa annual conference in April.
This is the religious definition of war as outlined by Malik with explanations from the Quran, and it is “infinitely supreme and effective,” the general wrote.
Because the West does not associate war with the divine, however, Western interpretations of the motivations for jihad are unaccustomed to the general’s Quranic view; the ideas, for example, that “tumult and oppression [of Muslims] are worse than slaughter,” and that because of this, “war must be waged ‘only to fight the forces of tyranny and oppression.’ ”
As a former Defense Intelligence Agency analyst in Colombia now concurrently pursuing a doctorate in public policy at Auburn University in Alabama and a homeland security certificate at Texas A&M University, Myers has a specific interest in the domestic threat presented by terrorism.”

The Europeans have been far more successful at finding and arresting Islamic terrorists than their American counterparts. Part of that is because there are ten times as many Moslems in Europe as there are in the United States, and it's much easier for Islamic terrorists to get into Europe (mainly because the homelands of Islamic terrorists are close). Another reason is the tendency of American Moslems to integrate into their communities more than is the case in Europe (where governments have long encouraged migrants to maintain their language and culture.) Thus U.S. Moslems are more likely to report any suspicious activity. For this reason, even before September 11, 2001, al Qaeda warned terrorists operating in the United States, to avoid American Moslems.
Eur 2008 targeted by Islamic extremists

Snippets: A semi hauling explosives crashes near a rest stop, forcing police to limit, then close traffic on the interstate.
The driver failed to negotiate the curve, driving into some trees in the median between the exit and entrance ramps.
Vigo County Emergency Management Agency was on the scene and told us the rig was hauling a lot of explosives.
"All total, it was around 30 to 35,000 pounds of explosives," said J.D. Kesler of Vigo County EMA.
That said, Kesler says you'll find semis hauling explosive materials commonly on the nation's interstates.

According to Ya’akov, the Palestinian responded by saying ‘nothing’ in Arabic while lifting his shirt and exposing the pipe bombs, which were strapped to the right part of his body.
“I identified the explosive devices and yelled ‘explosives in the checkpoint’ and cocked my rifle. Everyone (soldiers) aimed at Palestinian’s head and neck so as not to set off the explosive device,” she said.
Ya’akov said she then ordered him to lift his shirt up. “The Palestinian raised his arms up for two seconds, then pulled them down and reached for the explosive device,” she said. At this point the checkpoint commander shot the man dead.”
If I was hauling explosives; I don’t believe I would drive recklessly.
I’m glad no one was hurt.

YouTube Videos Are Produced by Al Qaeda and Other Terror Organizations; Videos Show Attacks on U.S. Soldiers, Civilians
WASHINGTON – Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Joe Lieberman, ID-Conn., Monday called on Google to remove Internet video content produced by terrorist organizations such as Al-Qaeda. The videos – readily available on YouTube –show assassinations, deaths of U.S. soldiers and civilians, weapons training, incendiary speeches by al-Qaeda leadership, and other material intended to encourage violence against the West.
The videos are branded with Al-Qaeda logos – a practice detailed in a recent bipartisan Committee staff report entitled “Violent Islamist Extremism, the Internet, and the Homegrown Terrorist Threat.” These production logos are easily recognizable, making it easy for Google to remove them from its Internet sites. Lieberman called on Google to enforce its own community standards against videos that show gratuitous violence or people getting “hurt, attacked, or humiliated.”
“Islamist terrorist organizations use YouTube to disseminate their propaganda, enlist followers, and provide weapons training,” the Senator said in his letter. “YouTube also, unwittingly, permits Islamist terrorist groups to maintain an active, pervasive, and amplified voice, despite military setbacks or successful operations by the law enforcement and intelligence communities…

Dear Dr. Schmidt:
YouTube is being used to share videos produced by al-Qaeda and other Islamist terrorist groups. The purpose of this letter is to request that Google implement its own policy against this offensive material, remove these videos from YouTube, and prevent them from reappearing.
Today, Islamist terrorist organizations rely extensively on the Internet to attract supporters and advance their cause. The framework for much of this Internet campaign is described in a bipartisan staff report released last week by the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs (“Committee”), which I am privileged to chair, titled Violent Islamist Extremism, the Internet, and the Homegrown Terrorist Threat. The report explains, in part, how al-Qaeda created and manages a multi-tiered online media operation that produces content intended to enlist followers in countries all over the world, including the United States. Central to this media campaign is the branding of content with an icon or logo to guarantee authenticity that the content was produced by al-Qaeda or allied organizations like al-Qaeda in Iraq, Ansar al-Islam (a.k.a Ansar al-Sunnah) or al-Qaeda in the Land of the Islamic Maghreb. All of these groups have been designated Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTO) by the Department of State.
Searches on YouTube return dozens of videos branded with an icon or logo identifying the videos as the work of one of these Islamist terrorist organizations. A great majority of these videos document horrific attacks on American soldiers in Iraq or Afghanistan. Others provide weapons training, speeches by al-Qaeda leadership, and general material intended to radicalize potential recruits.
In other words, Islamist terrorist organizations use YouTube to disseminate their propaganda, enlist followers, and provide weapons training – activities that are all essential to terrorist activity. According to testimony received by our Committee, the online content produced by al-Qaeda and other Islamist terrorist organizations can play a significant role in the process of radicalization, the end point of which is the planning and execution of a terrorist attack. YouTube also, unwittingly, permits Islamist terrorist groups to maintain an active, pervasive, and amplified voice, despite military setbacks or successful operations by the law enforcement and intelligence communities.
YouTube posts “community guidelines” for users to follow, but it does not appear that the company is enforcing these guidelines to the extent they would apply to this content. For example, the community guidelines state that “[g]raphic or gratuitous violence is not allowed. If your video shows someone getting hurt, attacked, or humiliated, don’t post it.” Many of the videos produced by one of the production arms of al-Qaeda show attacks on U.S. forces in which American soldiers are injured and, in some cases, killed. Nevertheless, those videos remain available for viewing on YouTube. At the same time, the guidelines do not prohibit the posting of content that can be readily identified as produced by al-Qaeda or another FTO.
I ask you, therefore, to immediately remove content produced by Islamist terrorist organizations from YouTube. This should be a straightforward task since so many of the Islamist terrorist organizations brand their material with logos or icons identifying their provenance. In addition, please explain what changes Google plans to make to the YouTube community guidelines to address violent extremist material and how Google plans to enforce those guidelines to prevent the content from reappearing.
Protecting our citizens from terrorist attacks is a top priority for our government. The private sector can help us do that. By taking action to curtail the use of YouTube to disseminate the goals and methods of those who wish to kill innocent civilians, Google will make a singularly important contribution to this important national effort.

Private Islamic school in Huntington Beach to close
Snippets: Students protested Monday after a private Islamic school was scheduled to be closed, KNBC's Vikki Vargas reported. The California Science Academy received an eviction notice last Wednesday. It said faculty, staff and students must leave the Huntington Beach campus by the end of Monday.
"I think people at the school did a disservice to the students by not paying their bills on time in order to stay open," said Barry Blade of the Fountain Valley School District.
Lethal stash of 16 weapons hauled from 24-strong teenage gang on London double decker
Officers found 16 weapons in total, including six knives, two screwdrivers, a corkscrew, a metal baseball bat, a mallet and a metal bar.
Yesterday, the Western Australian Police Minister John Kobelke declared laser pointers to be ‘controlled weapons’ with fines of up to $4000 or 12 months jail for their illegal use.
