Critical Threats: Blank When None
U.S. Wary Of Small Boat Terrorism

As boating season approaches, the Bush administration wants to enlist America's 80 million recreational boaters to help reduce the chances that a small boat could deliver a nuclear or radiological bomb somewhere along the 95,000 miles of U.S. coastline and inland waterways.

According to an April 23 intelligence assessment obtained by The Associated Press, "The use of a small boat as a weapon is likely to remain al Qaeda's weapon of choice in the maritime environment, given its ease in arming and deploying, low cost, and record of success."

While the United States has so far been spared this type of strike in its own waters, terrorists have used small boats to attack in other countries. Read More

“U.S. not at war with Islam faith, Bush says”
By Jon Ward
May 17, 2008

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “President Bush yesterday told students in Israel he hasn’t done enough to dispel the idea that the United States is at war with Islam, but also blamed the “poisonous” state-run TV stations in the Middle East for mischaracterizing him.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Mr. Bush responded: “Actually what I say is you’re not a religious person if you’re a murderer. But you’re right. I’ve got to do a better job of making it clear when I talk about Islam, I talk about a peaceful religion, which I talk about a lot.””

Military honchos ‘suppress’ chaplain’s Baptist services
Was told being ‘born again’ has ‘no place’ in Army life
Posted: May 16, 2008
8:35 pm Eastern

By Bob Unruh
© 2008 WorldNetDaily

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Another comment came in from an Army chaplain.

“The persecution centers on Christian chaplains praying in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,” he wrote. “My ‘Christian’ group leader was indignant and ridiculed me for praying in Jesus’ name and for suggesting that I would have an altar call during chapel services that I lead,” the chaplain, whose identity was withheld, wrote.

“Additionally, he said, it is offensive to pray in the name of Jesus and is against Army policy to do so.”

Jones also earlier rallied help for an Army chaplain who was serving in Iraq but was removed from his chapel for speaking to the media about the importance of the freedom to pray according to his faith tradition. The chaplain later was reinstated.

The issue of praying in Jesus’ name also has come up in the setting of public facilities in the United States.

But it is the case of Klingenschmitt that so far has raised the most serious questions about the military’s treatment of Christianity.

He was convicted by the Navy of failing to follow a lawful order because his superior didn’t want him praying “in Jesus name.” But when Congress got word of his $3,000 fine for his prayer, members ordered the Navy to remove the limitation and allow chaplains to pray as their “conscience dictates.””

“U.N. racism investigator to visit U.S. from Monday”
Fri May 16, 2008 2:48pm EDT
By Stephanie Nebehay

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “GENEVA (Reuters) - A special U.N. human rights investigator will visit the United States this month to probe racism, an issue that has forced its way into the race to secure the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination.

The United Nations said Doudou Diene would meet federal and local officials, as well as lawmakers and judicial authorities during the May 19-June 6 visit.

“The special rapporteur will...gather first-hand information on issues related to racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance,” a U.N. statement said on Friday.

His three-week visit, at U.S. government invitation, will cover eight cities — Washington D.C., New York, Chicago, Omaha, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Miami and San Juan, Puerto Rico.”

Racism and racial discrimination on rise around the world, UN expert warns

Doudou Diene
7 March 2006 – Racism and racial discrimination are on the upswing and becoming widespread throughout the world, with the current global situation confirming the worst expectations that man’s worst tendencies are created in the womb, a United Nations expert on racism warned today.

While racial discrimination used to be the province of extremist far right political parties, it is now becoming a regular part of democratic systems, being blended in for example with the fight against terrorism, Doudou Diène, Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance told the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination in Geneva.

Racism and xenophobia are coming out of the closet, in a sense, and gradually creeping into the policies of mainstream political actors, Mr. Diène said. That fact is manifest not only in the backing away from cultural diversity manifested by many States, but also in restrictive policies regarding immigrants and asylum-seekers.

Speeches against immigrants, foreigners and asylum-seekers are becoming popular and intellectual legitimization is being granted to those currents, he added.

Referring to the recent controversial depictions of the Prophet Muhammad in Danish newspaper cartoons and the violent reactions, he said the cartoons illustrated the increasing emergence of the racist and xenophobic currents in everyday life. But the political context in Denmark was what had given birth to the cartoons.

It was one in which an extremist political party enjoyed 13 per cent of the vote and had formed part of the governing coalition. The development of Islamophobia or any racism and racial discrimination always took place in the context of the emergence of strong racist, extremist political parties and a corresponding absence of reaction against such racism by the country’s political leaders, Mr. Diène said.

There were other factors, including increased immigration flows, and the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks against the United States, but the political factor was an essential condition, he said.

He called for international mechanisms, including the UN General Assembly, to treat cases such as the Danish cartoons not as a clash of civilizations but as a debate on the balancing of two rights, freedom of expression and freedom of religion. The law, he stressed, could not provide a satisfactory answer. It would have to be accompanied by a lot of thinking on the need for inter-religious, inter-ethnic and intercultural dialogue.

Special Rapporteurs, who are unpaid and serve in a personal capacity, receive their mandates from the UN Commission on Human Rights.
